What are your favorite Firefox Addons?

December 11, 2008 by Tricia

I was just writing on my main blog about my quest to find an addon for Firefox 3 that will let me open multiple links in new tabs. You know, when you want to visit several sites on a blogroll … it’s nice to be able to open 10 or 20 links in new tabs at once.

I used to have an addon called Linky but that doesn’t work with Firefox 3 so I’m looking for a replacement.

My quest also made me wonder what your favorite Firefox addons are?

I don’t like to use too many addons as I find it slows down my browser, but there are a few that I really like to use:

Twitterfox – allows you to see new tweets in a browser popup.

Stumbleupon – the Stumbleupon toolbar. I only enable it when I want to stumble.

SEO for firefox

SearchStatus – displays the Google pagerank, Alexa and Compete ranks of sites being viewed.

Google toolbar

Google Gears – helps pages load faster

Entrecard toolbar- makes it much easier to view Entrecard sites

Adsense notifier – allows you to see your Adsense totals in the status area or top of your browser.

So what Firefox addons do you like to use?

I have my own tech store

September 18, 2008 by Tricia

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this on My World yet, but I won some fantastic software a few weeks ago in a blog contest. The software is called StoreStacker and it allows you to easily build a store that carries products from Amazon, Ebay, and a few other big online stores.

I built my first store on a sub-domain of one of my Tech blogs and it only took minutes to set up! Well ok … setting up categories for the products etc took a little longer than that, but once it came down to filling the store with products that part only took minutes! It’s amazing! I now have an online store with maybe 5,000 products or perhaps even more than that. I know the sitemap is HUGE!

I set up the store to carry high tech items like computers, computer accessories, computer games, video games like xbox 360 vintage PC’s, HDTV’s, digital cameras and more.

I probably won’t make many sales until I start getting some traffic to the store, but it’s a neat concept and you can’t beat free software! When I have time I create a few more stores – one that fit with my particular sites niches. Those stores will probably do better than the first store that I just created.

Have any of you tried using Storestacker or any other type of software to build your own store almost automatically?

Using Gmail to filter out the spam

August 29, 2008 by Tricia

I’m declaring war on Spam, right now, right here.

Every single day I start up my email program and I’m bombarded with spam email after spam email … worse still, the spammers are hitting all of my blogs really hard too!

Other than using programs like Akismet and Bad Behavior to ward off spammers on my sites I’m pretty much at my wits end.

I did however figure out a way to deal with some of the email spam .. you know the stuff i mean – tons of Paris Hilton spam, or mesothelioma lawyers and so on .. and by tons I literally mean 1000 plus email a day. I run several websites, mailing lists and blogrolls so I get a lot of real mail, but at least half the mail I get or more is spam.

So how did I do it? Well, I finally set up a Gmail account.

I use my new Gmail account to route my email from my regular email addresses (you can add up to five non-Gmail email addresses) through Gmail. Gmail then filters pretty much all of the spam and sends the non spam email back to me where I collect it in my computer email program.

Every few days I go through my spam email on Gmail to check to make sure that no real email is being held back. I’ve found that Gmail is fairly accurate, much more so than the Eudora email program that I use on my computer! Yes I know, I should upgrade my home email program to something like Thunderbird. I’ve heard that Thunderbird is a good program and that it’s also very good at filtering spam. I guess I’ll get around to changing over from my outdated Eudora someday.

How do you handle email spam?

My desktop computer is so much faster than my laptop

July 19, 2008 by Tricia

Lately I’ve been using my desktop computer more often. We got our Laptop two years ago and I let myself fall into the habit of using the notebook pretty much 100% of the time, however lately my laptop has been slowing down and it’s becoming frustrating to work on it.

My desktop computer on the other hand is nice and fast! We did a memory upgrade last year and well I guess the computer chip is faster than the laptops as well even though the Desktop computer was purchased in 2004. You’d think it would be the other way around with the laptop being faster … not in this case!

The main reason I had started using the desktop computer more often lately is because I purchased some programs that don’t seem to work on the laptop. I have something wrong with my .net framework installations on the laptop. They’re installed for programs that need them, but the programs won’t work, so there’s got to e some corrupted files or something else going on.

I guess I’ll have to completely remove all the .net framework installations, clean the computer up with a net framework cleanup program that I downloaded a while ago (through Microsoft) and re-install. I’m just worried that some programs will crash badly when I remove the installations and then I’ll have even more trouble.

So for now I’ll just have to use the software that I purchased recently only on the desktop!

I am enjoying working on my old computer again though. As I said earlier it’s so much faster than the Laptop. Even blogs and websites I visit seems to load faster. Now if I could only get my laptop working close to the desktops speed I’d be happy.

Does your computer make you frustrated with it loads programs or websites slowly?

Spending way too much money lately

May 31, 2008 by Tricia

I have been spending money left and right on the internet this past month. First I purchased the latest Adsense Secrets 4.0 back in late April. Then when I started having success with some of the tips I learned in that e-book I started checking out more programs.

Now I’m thinking of purchasing a program that will keep track of my Adsense clicks and stats so that I can optimize my pages further. My poor savings account is starving as I’m not feeding it additional funds these days. LOL I just need to make sure that the program is ok to use as far as Google TOS is concerned. I certainly don’t want to do anything that will cause me to lose my Adsense account!
