Maintaining multiple blogs is getting harder and harder

September 30, 2008 by Tricia

If you are a regular reader of this blog you probably already know that I maintain several blogs. Lately I’ve been feeling like I’m just spinning my wheels. You know, working all day on different things, but still feeling like I haven’t made much progress at all. I know … all those little things I’m doing usually pay off down the road, but when you have a number of sites all the tasks to maintain and promote them can become overwhelming.

I’ve been feeling this way for several months. I think part of the problem is that my routine isn’t as organized as it used to be. I used to write posts in advance and save them as drafts or set them to publish on future dates. If I had enough of them set up that way for a number of sites it left me free to do things like comment on other blogs, network, add site listings to directories or write articles to publish on article sites to help promote the sites and gain traffic.

I think I’ve slowly been becoming more and more disorganized because I simply don’t sleep much anymore. I’m in chronic pain due to Crohns so I’m achy when I get up in the morning and if I didn’t get enough sleep it takes a while to get on a role with my writing. Then by the time my husband is going to bed at night I start to feel like I’m getting work done, feel like I’m on a role … but I’m starting to get tired so it’s harder to get things done.

I’m going to revamp my whole routine. I’m going to start getting up by 8 am – even if I didn’t sleep well or didn’t fall asleep until 5 am! Then I’ll try to do some exercise – take the dog for a walk, work out on the elliptical – whichever as long as it’s about an hour of physical activity. That will help me get in gear for the day and hopefully help me lose a few of the extra pounds I’ve put on as my routine began to fall apart ( no fat burners for me! not yet anyway!).

Then after getting the basics out of the way like eating and showering I’ll spend a few hours writing for all the blogs and then an hour or two promoting the sites and or networking. It’s important that I get the writing done during the day when there’s less distractions. The promoting and networking can go into the evening if they must.

Now the last and hardest part for me will be getting to bed by a decent time. I can’t see myself going to bed any earlier than 11 pm as I’ve always been a night owl. 2 am is probably more likely! either way if I can make myself get 6 to 9 hours of solid sleep each night I think everything else will fall back in place for me again.

Do you work at home or do you maintain multiple blogs? What’s your routine like? Are you organized or are you finding it harder and harder to keep up?

I have my own tech store

September 18, 2008 by Tricia

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this on My World yet, but I won some fantastic software a few weeks ago in a blog contest. The software is called StoreStacker and it allows you to easily build a store that carries products from Amazon, Ebay, and a few other big online stores.

I built my first store on a sub-domain of one of my Tech blogs and it only took minutes to set up! Well ok … setting up categories for the products etc took a little longer than that, but once it came down to filling the store with products that part only took minutes! It’s amazing! I now have an online store with maybe 5,000 products or perhaps even more than that. I know the sitemap is HUGE!

I set up the store to carry high tech items like computers, computer accessories, computer games, video games like xbox 360 vintage PC’s, HDTV’s, digital cameras and more.

I probably won’t make many sales until I start getting some traffic to the store, but it’s a neat concept and you can’t beat free software! When I have time I create a few more stores – one that fit with my particular sites niches. Those stores will probably do better than the first store that I just created.

Have any of you tried using Storestacker or any other type of software to build your own store almost automatically?

So who’s going to Blogworld this year?

September 18, 2008 by Tricia

Almost every site I go to these days – well the social blogging platforms like Mybloglog, Blogcatalog and other BIG sites seem to have ads for the Blogworld expo this weekend.

I went last year and I thought it was great. I learned a lot- especially since I was also attending another blogging convention that was going on at the same time and I had a great time.

Of course it was in November last year. I don’t know what the temperatures are in Vegas at this time of year, but I do know that by November they’re perfect for anyone who’s thinking of taking one of those infamous Vegas vacations lol. It was quite comfortable.

Anyway … I guess I’m getting a little weary seeing the same ads on all the big sites. Perhaps if I were going to Blogworld I’d feel differently, but since I’m not … enough already!

It’s kind of like when you’re visiting a lot of blogs and you keep seeing posts talking abut the same product or service everywhere. 😉

Anyone going to Blogworld this year? Hmm I guess if you’re going you might already be there or traveling to Vegas right now.

Busy weekend updating 16 WP blogs!

September 16, 2008 by Tricia

You know what I did this weekend?  I updated 116 blogs to either WP version 2.6.1 or the latest version 2.6.2.  That was a huge task!

Luckily I was able to do half of them using my C-panel Fantastico section – those were the blogs that were only updated to 2.6.1 and the rest I updated by using the WordPress Automatic Update plugin.  I used the plugin for the first time … otherwise my updates would have all been manual updates.  Ugh … that would have taken even longer.

Unfortunately I’ve discovered a small problem or two. The blogs that I updated using the Automatic update plugin won’t go into the new Turbo mode using Google Gears. After reading the WordPress.org forums it seems that the update plugin doesn’t update all of the files so I might have a few missing. So it looks like I’ll have to manually update anyway.

I also discovered that one of the blogs that I used the autoupdate plugin on has a widget problem. The site looks fine from the front end, but when I try to edit the widgets in the right column I can only see a few of the widgets. There’s an error message that I’m missing one of the files that one of the codes i have in a text widget calls for (the file is not missing BTW – it’s where it should be).  I can’t see any of the widgets below the one that WP thinks has an error in it.

So I don’t know if that’s an error caused by using the Automatic Upgrade Plugin – if it is, it will soon be corrected when I manually update the iste, or if it’s a problem with either the theme that I’m using and or WP 2.6.2 itself.

I hope that I can fix the problem with a manual update of the WP files.  Otherwise I’m going to have to go searching to see if anyone else has this problem and try to track down a way to fix it.  Or wait until WP updates again so I can see if this problem goes away. Big drag not being able to edit the content of you widgets! Grrrr

Oh I also discovered that when creating a post in WP 2.6.2 that if you accidentally forget to give your post a title there’s no going back!  You used to be able to edit the post slug. The only time I ever did that was on the rare occasion that I posted without a title. I’d just go back, remove the slug and save the post after giving it a title and the post slug would contain the post title as it should.   It seems that there’s no post slug area in the new WP.  So the post I made a mistake on now has a numerical url. Yuck … not good SEO.

Exciting weekend huh?  Now it’s time for me to go and eat dinner. I made homemade spaghetti sauce so we’re having a delicious spaghetti dinner.  We’ll watch House while we eat … can’t wait to see the premiere!

Using Gmail to filter out the spam

August 29, 2008 by Tricia

I’m declaring war on Spam, right now, right here.

Every single day I start up my email program and I’m bombarded with spam email after spam email … worse still, the spammers are hitting all of my blogs really hard too!

Other than using programs like Akismet and Bad Behavior to ward off spammers on my sites I’m pretty much at my wits end.

I did however figure out a way to deal with some of the email spam .. you know the stuff i mean – tons of Paris Hilton spam, or mesothelioma lawyers and so on .. and by tons I literally mean 1000 plus email a day. I run several websites, mailing lists and blogrolls so I get a lot of real mail, but at least half the mail I get or more is spam.

So how did I do it? Well, I finally set up a Gmail account.

I use my new Gmail account to route my email from my regular email addresses (you can add up to five non-Gmail email addresses) through Gmail. Gmail then filters pretty much all of the spam and sends the non spam email back to me where I collect it in my computer email program.

Every few days I go through my spam email on Gmail to check to make sure that no real email is being held back. I’ve found that Gmail is fairly accurate, much more so than the Eudora email program that I use on my computer! Yes I know, I should upgrade my home email program to something like Thunderbird. I’ve heard that Thunderbird is a good program and that it’s also very good at filtering spam. I guess I’ll get around to changing over from my outdated Eudora someday.

How do you handle email spam?
