Getting hyped up about our trip to Vegas

November 2, 2007 by Tricia

I’m getting all geared up for the trip to Vegas next week. We’re going to the Blogworld and Postiecon conventions and I’ve been busy trying to get everything I’ll need prepared for the trip.

I’m excited and nervous about going to Las Vegas all at the same time.

I’m excited because it’s the first time I’ve flown anywhere this century!

Now that I wrote that, it kind of sounds weird doesn’t it, but honestly, I haven’t been on a plane since oh … 1998. I’m also nervous because every time I do travel by plane my ears hurt like crazy. I used to be able to fly without any problems, but ever since I got my tonsils out at the tender age of 21 my ear drums just about explode when I fly. Seriously, I’ve gone to the doctor after a flight and been told that my ear drums were so inflamed that the doctor was surprised they didn’t burst.

Chris, my husband, is afraid of flying. So between the two of us – me likely with a face full of gum and swallowing like crazy with a pained look on my face and my husband trying to stave off a panic attack we’ll probably be quite the pair.

I’m also nervous because I agreed to speak or well, be on a panel, at Postiecon and well … I’m kind of shy, especially in crowds. I probably won’t really start having fun on the trip until I get that over with on Saturday morning.

I think I’ll just write off Thursday evening. If we feel up to it we’ll try to get together with some of our blogging friends, but I think Chris will be tired as he’ll be taking ativan or valium for the flight, and well, I’ll be full of decongestant, allergy meds, aspirin and anything else I can get my hands on to keep my ears from becoming inflamed during the flight. The last time I flew I was pretty buzzed for about 12 hours when I landed. All those meds took a toll on me. So I think we’ll be in flight recovery mode Thursday night.

Are you going to Vegas next week for the blogging conventions?

I think we’re just about ready for our trip

October 24, 2007 by Tricia

I think I’m just about all set for our trip to Vegas.

We’ve gone shopping to get some new clothes – a must for any trip! Plus, I got some new things for my computer as I’ll be bringing my laptop with me when I got to the blogging convention.

I got a new battery for my laptop so it will last longer when it’s unplugged, and I also got an external 380 GB hard drive as I expect that Chris and I will be taking a lot of digital photos and videos. I figured we can store all of our digital media on the external hard drive. Plus, later, after our trip I can use the external drive to backup important files – kind of like a zip drive I guess.

I guess you could say we got everything but the IBM memory. Uhm that’s supposed to be a pun … you know, everything but the kitchen sink? Except since I’m talking about my computer … ah never mind. LOL

I was on a roll

October 24, 2007 by Tricia

I was on such a roll yesterday. Blogging away on almost all my blogs like I haven’t done for a while. No, I wasn’t feeling better, but I suddenly had a lot more energy than I’ve had for a while and I got a lot of work done.

It felt good.

Now here I am, still blogging away, but behind! I really wish that I’d get my Wordless Wednesday posts up one day by midnight.

I still have a few posts to catch with though so it will be a little while before I get to post some photos that I find intriguing. Speaking of photos … I still have a whole slew on my digital camera that I have to upload to my computer – really great photos! Ah, when will I find the time to work on them?

Facebook connections on and offline

October 5, 2007 by Tricia

My sister has discovered Facebook. I figured her daughter was on it, but I never really thought of my sister as the Facebook type.

Earlier this week we became “friends” on Facebook and nearly every day we’ve been sending messages back and forth. I think we’ve talked more online this week than we have on the phone or even in person in months!

Of course the way we discovered that we were both on Facebook started with a phone conversation. My sister had called to say hello and to ask me if I knew anything about the care of hedgehogs. She’d just bought her daughter a hedgehog and since I specialize in the care of exotic pets she thought I’d know something about them and their diet. Unfortunately that’s one of the few exotic animals that I don’t know much about. I was able to help her with the diet though.

The conversation moved on to a discussion about vacuum cleaners of all things. She really needs to get herself a new one. I know she bought a Shark about four or five years ago, but it doesn’t seem to work anymore. I suggested that she take a look a Miele vacuum as they seem to be a popular brand and I think they’re probably fairly reliable. It was sometime after that, that we got on to Facebook.

Oddly, later that evening we were talking with one of our old friends on the phone. Chris and I were busy filling out our Passport applications (we need them for our Las Vegas trip in November!) and our friend Todd asked why I haven’t added him as a friend on Facebook yet.

I’m used to having my online friends ask me to add them to my Facebook account, but not my offline friends or relatives! So it was really strange to have two people ask me on the same day. Well, three really because my niece also added me as a friend too.

How long do laptops last?

September 28, 2007 by Tricia

Last year, well last summer I should say, I treated myself to my first laptop computer.

Lately I’ve been hearing people say that their laptop only lasted for about a year. I don’t know what models they purchased or how they used their computer, but that seems like an awfully short time doesn’t it?

Now I’m wondering how long I might expect this laptop to last? I use it for at least 8 hours a day. Sometimes it’s on for 48 hours at a time! Often it’s on for 12 to 18 hours.

I’ve actually thought of getting another laptop. Perhaps something else to add to the ol Christmas list? Chris likes to use the laptop too so it might be nice for us to have two of them. We have a desktop computer too, but I find it so much more convenient to use the laptop most of the time, although I think I’m more productive when I sit at the desktop as I’m not watching TV at the same time. That’s probably the key reason why I do better at the desktop.

So what do you think? How long should a laptop last and should I get a second one?
