My monitor wouldn’t start

July 11, 2008 by Tricia

The other day when I turned on my (lately rarely used) desktop computer the monitor wouldn’t turn on. I spent half an hour attempting to turn it on with it’s remote and also pushing the power button and it just wouldn’t start up.

I was so upset. We’d just bought the LCD viewsonic monitor at the beginning of January in a boxing day sale and here it was not working only 6 months or so later.

I finally decided to try unplugging it and then plugged it back in. Sure enough as soon as I hit the power button it turned on. I sure hope that that was only a fluke and not the beginning of trouble with the monitor.

Great deals on electronics at TechBargains

November 27, 2007 by Tricia

The holidays will be here soon and if you are like me you’ve started to shop and you’re probably watching for sales and bargains so that you can get some great gifts for your family and friends.

You might want to check out Techbargains.com. They have all kinds of deals on electronics such as HDTVs, GPS systems, cheap digital camera, iPods, LCD displays, Notebooks, cell phones and many other products that would make ideal gifts.

TechBargains has exclusive deals coming out all the time. If you really want to get a bargain it would be in your best interest to sign up for their email deal alert which you can customize to fit your interests. By this I mean that when you sign up for email deal alerts you can add keywords or pick a specific category and when deals come up for products in those categories or that match your keywords you’ll get an alert.

There’s also an email newsletter each week that highlights the best deals of the week.

Other ways to keep an eye on deals and bargains at TechBargains would be to subscribe to their RSS feed or visit their webpage using your mobile phone. You can even sign up for their mobile RSS feed if you prefer to use your cellphone to keep track of potential deals on great tech products.

I like that the site is constantly updated. They even do updates on weekends and holidays so no matter when you check the site you can find some new bargains.

I found that the site is very easy to use. You can navigate easily by using the tabs at the top of each page. For example if you wanted to check to see if there were any coupon deals for Dell products you could just click on the coupons tab and then select Dell at the top of the page. Otherwise you could just scan through the whole list of coupons to possibly find a discount on an item that you want to purchase.

There’s also a tab for rebates. I love rebates. Sometimes you can get quite a discount on an item that has a rebate coupon.

There are thousands of items listed at Techbargains. Once you find an item that you want to buy you can read the product descriptions and even do product comparisons. I think you’ll find Techbargains quite helpful as you shop for holiday gifts for your loved ones this year.

I think we’re just about ready for our trip

October 24, 2007 by Tricia

I think I’m just about all set for our trip to Vegas.

We’ve gone shopping to get some new clothes – a must for any trip! Plus, I got some new things for my computer as I’ll be bringing my laptop with me when I got to the blogging convention.

I got a new battery for my laptop so it will last longer when it’s unplugged, and I also got an external 380 GB hard drive as I expect that Chris and I will be taking a lot of digital photos and videos. I figured we can store all of our digital media on the external hard drive. Plus, later, after our trip I can use the external drive to backup important files – kind of like a zip drive I guess.

I guess you could say we got everything but the IBM memory. Uhm that’s supposed to be a pun … you know, everything but the kitchen sink? Except since I’m talking about my computer … ah never mind. LOL

Storms, power outages and computers! Oh My!

August 30, 2007 by Tricia

It looks like we’re going to have a good storm here!

Yesterday when I got up I was surprised to find that it was already 32 Celsius outside and the humidity was making it feel like it was 40 celcius! That’s darn hot! I have a desktop weather network widget on my computer and all day it was flashing warnings that we were expecting a severe storm. That always seems to happen when it gets to be outrageously hot outside.

Well of course it never rained during the day!

Now it’s four a.m. and I can see lightening all round and I hear thunder off in the distance. So I guess we’re getting our storm. We certainly need the rain.

I hate storms though. for some reason the power goes out about half the time whenever the power goes out. I always worry about my nice TV set, it’s a Samsung DLP HDTV and I’d hate for a power surge to cause a problem. Yes we do have a power surge protector but still I worry.

You see, back when we had that big blackout in 2003 that affected something like 50 million people across Ontario and the North Eastern United States we must have had a power surge. It either happened when the power went out or when the power came back on.

All but my desktop computer were ok. You see the power surge did something to the computers power supply and the computer just wouldn’t work. We had to look up power supply repair companies. In the end we just bought a new power supply, but we did have a bit of trouble finding the right power supply for our computer. What a pain!

So you can see why I worry about whatever electrical equiptment I’m using when a storm crops up can’t you?

In the old days before our PVR

July 20, 2007 by Tricia

I was just thinking about something I used to do when people would call while I was watching a television show that I didn’t want to miss. I used to switch the TV over to closed captioning. Sure it distracted me a little bit from my telephone conversation, but I could still keep up to some degree with what was going on in the show.

Now of course we have a PVR. That’s like a TIVO for those of you who don’t know what a PVR is. We almost always record our favorite shows on the PVR because we don’t always watch the shows when they are on TV. We watch them hours later. One bonus to this is we can skim through all the commercials.

The PVR also lets us pause or even rewind a live program. I love this! If the phone rings while I’m watching something interesting or if I need to use the washroom or go cook dinner I can either just pause the program or let it run and rewind it back to where I’d left off when I’m ready to watch the show again.

I love it!

Who else has a PVR?
