Our free monitors

June 22, 2007 by Tricia

Years ago, before my husband and I moved to this neighborhood and both started working in the hospital my husband worked in the computer trade as a technician.

He worked for a fairly large company that sold computer related equiptment – huge orders of systems and associated peripherals, would go through their warehouse. Sometimes there was something wrong with the equipment and it either didn’t end up being shipped or it was returned by their clients.

The company often threw out the returned equipment. Not always, yes they’d return it to the manufacture most of the time but for some reason it was too much bother to send some of it back.

Well that’s how Chris and I ended up getting two viewsonic monitors. One is in use in our upstairs computer room. It’s a big 20 inch monitor. It had fallen and it’s got a crack across the top. It’s screen needs a lot of tinkering to get it to align properly but once you’ve put the time into it the monitor works great.

The second monitor is one of the first Viewsonic LCD monitors. As far as we know it’s in perfect working condition. Unfortunately it’s always been missing it’s cord so we’ve never been able to plug it in and use it.

I’d love to find a place that sold possibly obscure computer and monitor accessories as I might be able to find the right cord at one of these places.

Interesting how we got some nice freebies though isn’t it?

Backup your data online with IDrive-E

June 21, 2007 by Tricia

I know so many people who love using their computers, but they don’t do much to protect the data that they store on their computers. I’ve always been an advocate of keeping a backup of computer data. Whether it be all the important files on the computer or just the files and folders that contain information that it would be a shame to lose.

Now there’s an easy way to back up your data. IDrive-E provides an online backup service that is free for those storing 2 GB of data or less. You can use this backup service to protect anything from your financial documents, MP3s, videos, emails, and photos.

This is a secure online backup service as it’s encrypted with 256 bit AES.

Once an IDrive-E member stores backup data on IDrive-E their backup will appear as a mapped drive on their PC. This makes it easy to restore data when necessary.

IDrive-E also offers a pro package for as little as $49.50 per year. Those who take this package will be able to store and unlimited amount of data. This would be a great subscription package for small businesses. Plus, IDrive-E has recently enhanced their service giving small businesses the ability to create and manage multiple accounts.

Visit the IDrive-E website today to learn more about their online backup service.

Using business cards to promote my blogs

June 8, 2007 by Tricia

I mentioned on one of my other sites that I’ve been invited to a few speaking engagements recently. One of them is a 4 hour blogging seminar that will be held in June. There’s four sessions open for those who want to sign up and learn more about making money through blogging.

If I attend and speak at these seminars I’m going to make up some business cards first. So I think this weekend I’ll head over the one of the office supplies stores and get one of those packages were you can print out your own cards. I’ve done this before to promote my sites but I haven’t made up any new business cards since I started blogging a year and a half ago.

People are always trying to come up with new ways to promote their sites and I’d actually forgotten about using business cards. I mean if you have a job where you meet a lot of people and sometimes talk to them about blogging, or if you socialize often ie attend parties, take your kids to their after school activities and sit with other parents etc … why not make up some cards with your site address on them and hand them out to some of the people you are talking with if they’re interested? You might end up getting a new regular reader by doing this.

I know this worked well for my websites. My websites are exotic pet related so if I got into a conversation with someone about exotic pets, or visited a pet store and let them know who I am (my sites are very popular and I’ve written several articles for top reptile magazines) they happily take my cards so that they can hand them out to their clients. They do this because my websites are a source of care information.

Whether it will work for blogs I’ve yet to find out, but it’s worth trying.

Upgrade computer or buy a new one?

May 22, 2007 by Tricia

I think it’s time to upgrade our old computer that we keep upstairs. I think we bought it in 1998. Maybe we should just scrap it instead of putting money into upgrading it? I don’t know.

The only reason we are keeping it is because we occasionally take on a boarder and when we do it’s nice for them to have a computer in their room. Even if it is old, clunky and slow! Plus, if the boarder or guest were to do something to mess up the computer I’d rather it be the old one that I don’t really care about rather than one that I use daily!

If we upgrade the computer we definitely need to get some more memory for it. We need to get IBM memory since it’s an IBM computer. Arghh … It also needs major software upgrades, but because it has a slower processor we can’t upgrade the Windows XP any further than we already have, and I’m sure some of the other software that we could upgrade on it won’t work either.

It really is sounding more and more like we need a new spare computer doesn’t it?

Computer problem update!

April 26, 2007 by Tricia

Our computer part was delivered within about four days! Yeah!

We installed the power supply and uhm … our A drive didn’t want to work- we’d get an error message on start up and got that message to go into the bios and fix the problem or push F2? to continue.

After contacting the power supply seller about the problem and discovering that he had no idea how to fix it we simply disabled to A drive. We never use the 3.5 discs anymore anyway.

So now I have my desktop computer back, and as a result my husband has more time on the laptop.
