Trying to lose a few pounds before the end of the month

December 6, 2009 by Tricia

Ahhh! My nieces wedding is coming up soon! It’s on the 30th of December – just 24 days from now!

I’m not ready!

I’ve been working out every day over the last week and a half, but it hasn’t helped much yet. I want to lose about 10 lb before the wedding. I need to lose weight fast so that I’ll look great by the time her wedding day arrives.

My meals are low calorie (low fat, low sugar) and I’ve been taking long walks with the dog each day. In addition to this I’ve been using Wii fit Plus, Gold’s Cardio workout and AE Sports Active on my Wii for at least an hour a day. All of which get my heart rate up and get me sweating.

I’m pretty sure that if I keep this up I’ll lose the 10 lb that I want to lose, but so far I really haven’t seen much in the way of results … well if you don’t count sore muscles! The work outs are definitely doing something to my body because my arms, ribs and thighs hurt!

What do you do when you need to lose 5 to 10 lb in a month?

I’m a Wii Fit newbie

January 21, 2009 by Tricia

I don’t know if you read my other blog, Tricia’s Musings, but last week I finally made my very first purchase at eBay. I’ll bet that most of you reading this have purchased things on eBay before, but I never had … maybe because I live in Canada and every time I found something I liked the cost of shipping and possible duty taxes dissuaded me from making a bid.

I’d been wanting to get a Wii Fit for some time, but as you probably know most of the stores are sold out so I decided to check out eBay last Monday and I found a Wii Fit for sale in New Brunswick (an Eastern Province). The price was only a little higher than what I’d pay in a retail store so I took a chance, made a bid and with only a few minutes left in the auction I sat back to wait and see if someone else would bid or if I’d win. Guess what? I won!

Unfortunately since I’m a complete newbie to the whole Wii phenomena I didn’t realize that I needed the console in order to use Wii Fit. Duh! Well what do you expect when you’ve only ever seen displays in stores but haven’t even seen the boxes since they’re all sold out? LOL

Had I known I would have bought a combo pack, but as it was I discovered within an hour of my Wii Fit auction win that I needed the console so off I went back to eBay to look for a Wii console. I found one at a semi decent price that included an extra remote, extra nunchuck and the Wii Play game.

The Wii fit that I’d bought arrived last Friday but I had to wait until Monday afternoon before the Wii console arrived! (it was coming from Calgary) So I’ve only been playing with my new Wii and Wii Fit for two days now. So far so good, but I really have to work on my balance! I’ve been really sick for three years and I was just diagnosed with extremely low Vitamin D levels so that has caused my muscles to be extremely weak (the vit d deficiency I mean).

The Wii Fit will hopefully help me get my muscles back in shape, but I probably won’t be truly fit until my vitamin D levels get back up into the normal range (could take a year!).

I’d like to get another sensor so that I can use the Wii on the TV we have upstairs. We’ve been thinking of getting an LCD mount so that we can attach that TV to the wall. Once we do that we’ll have more room in the bedroom and that would make a good area to exercise or play games too.

Do you have a Wii? or a Wii Fit? How do you like it? I’ve only tried bowling, tennis and boxing in Wii Sports so far and of the 9 games on Wii Play I only like the Billiards. I’d eventually like to get some other games.

I’ve been looking at Wii Winter Sports and Wii Ski – does anyone have those? Are they worth getting?

What other “active” games do you like?

I’d love to hear your suggestions and of your experiences with Wii.

I can’t thank my brother enough for a special gift

July 29, 2008 by Tricia

I don’t think my brother has any idea how happy he made me last week. He gave me a gift that I’d been wishing for, for years without even knowing how much I had wanted it.

So what did he give me? Two free passes to the Canadian Golf Open this past Saturday. Now that wasn’t what I’d been wishing for years. I’m not a fan of golf. It’s interesting I guess, but the best part was after the Open semi-finals on Saturday there was a Tom Cochrane and Red Rider concert. That was what I wanted!

I’ve been a fan of Tom Cochrane and Red Rider since I was a young teenager and I’ve always wanted to see the band in concert.

When my brother got in touch with me about two weeks ago to tell me that he might be able to get my husband and I passes for either the Saturday or Sunday I thought that was very nice of him. I thought my husband would enjoy watching the golf. However when he got the passes and told me that he’d picked the Saturday pass because ther was evening entertainment and told me what the entertainment was I nearly fainted.

So last Saturday we went to the Canadian Golf Open for a little while in the late afternoon (it had rained a good portion of the day and play was delayed by over two hours) then we set up our double folding chair right in front of the grandstand. We had primo seats for the concert!

It was amazing! Tom started out by singing Victory Day, then followed up with Big League, then Sinking like a Sunset. After that he did a song dedicated to his daughter Cody which I believe was called Northern Star, after that they did a slowed down version of Good Times, followed by Human Race, White Hot and Life is a Highway. They came back for an Encore and did Lunatic Fringe and ended with Boy inside the man.

I love each and every song and believe me I was singing along and moving to the music. It was fantastic!

I’ve already thanked my brother profusely and I’ll be thinking of him as he attends a seminar about corporate performance management this week! Ah, he doesn’t mind the work related courses or travel that much … heck, this past Friday he was able to attend the Canadian Golf Open by volunteering to man a booth there for his company.

Going to a concert tomorrow night!

July 25, 2008 by Tricia

Tomorrow Chris and I are going to the Canadian Open golf tournament at Glenn Abbey. My brother managed to get the two of us free passes for the day.

My husband is more into golf than I am. I’m not into it at all, but I still think it will be kind of interesting to go to the tournament as I’ve never been to one before and there will be some big names there. Plus who knows I might even see some celebrities too.

My brother had a choice of day passes to get us. He could either get us day passes for the semi finals on Saturday or the Finals on Sunday. He went with the Saturday passes because from Thursday to Saturday each evening after the rounds are finished there’s supposed to be a free concert. Tomorrow night Tom Cochrane and Red Rider are playing and unbeknownst to my brother that is one of my favorite bands of all time. I’ve never been to a Tom Cochrane concert so I’m super stoked to go.

The only problem with our day and evening away from home is that we have to leave our puppy alone. We can’t bring her with us unfortunately. We do have an idea though … We’re trying to reach one of our friends that lives in this condo hotel in the West end of town to see if he’ll doggy sit for us. He loves Labs and if he’s free it will be the perfect solution to our little problem.

If we can’t get our friend to doggy sit we’ll just go to the tournament in the late afternoon. As I said neither Chris nor I are that into golf. The main reason we want to go is for the concert. Even if we don’t go until the late afternoon I imagine our puppy will be alone for 6 or 7 hours. Since I’m home most of the time she’s never been alone even that long! This could be interesting.

Use a Natural Oxygen pool treatment and save money as well as the environment

May 9, 2008 by Tricia

I hope that everyone is enjoying the lovely spring weather. It’s been cool here so far this May, much cooler than April was if you can believe that, but I know that there are warm days on the way. Perhaps you live in an area where it’s already warm enough that you’ve started planning what you’ll do on those hot summer days?

I wish we had a pool, but our yard is far too small. A wading pool would have to suffice for us if we were hot enough to want to soak! Some of our friends do have pools and we’re lucky enough to be invited over for pool parties often enough each summer.

Our friends that have pools have been starting to to talk about getting their pools ready for the upcoming season. I’m sure those of you with pools have been thinking about getting them ready too.

If you have a pool or if you’ve been thinking about putting a pool in this year have you spent any time thinking about what kind of water treatment you’ll use? It’s one of the most important parts of pool maintenance from my understanding.

I’m all for environmentally friendly pool treatment systems. We garden organically and try to live as green as possible so it only makes sense that if we did have a pool we’d want the safest type of water treatment.

If you feel the same way or if you’re interested in learning more about eco friendly pool treatments you should take a moment to visit Ecosmartepool.com. They specialize in chlorine free pool filters and spas.

By now I think that just about everyone knows that chlorine treated water or pool systems aren’t very good for the environment.

I always thought that salt chlorinators were a safe alternative, but after reading some of the information and articles over at Ecosmartepool.com I know better!

Did you know that salt water pools actually use chlorine generators to keep the water clean. Chlorine generators require quite a bit of maintenance, some produce messy byproducts that isn’t easily disposed of, and as I said before Chlorine treatments really aren’t considered green.

Why not use a system that’s 100% chemical free? That’s were EcoSmarte comes in … They specialize in salt water, chlorine and hazardous chemical free pool systems. They also have a line of spa and pond systems as well that are equally chemical free.

EcoSmarte’s pool systems use natural oxygen to maintain the quality of the water in your pool. Natural oxygen systems are more effective than ones that use bacquacil or bromine, plus they are easier to use than chlorine based systems. Not only that they are also safer than ozone treatments too.

One of the other products that EcoSmarte sells is called EcoSmart filter glass media. This can be used for pool treatment systems.

One of the things that I like about EcoSmarte is that they are dedicated to protecting the environment. They actually donate 5% of their profits to environmental charities. They have a strong belief in their water treatment systems and are in fact, against Chlorine and Salt water based pool treatments.

There’s lots of good reason to consider switching to a natural oxygen based pool treatment system. One of them is the fact that you won’t be purchasing dangerous hazardous chemicals to maintain your pool system. That will not only make your pool maintenance storage area safer if you have kids or pets, but by not having to buy all those chemicals you’ll save a ton of money! Think about it!

Oh and you’ll save on your energy bill too. The EcoSmarte pool system is so energy efficient that it costs less than $1 a month to operate. Cool! You can reduce your carbon footprint with your energy savings!

If you’re thinking about visiting the EcoSmarte website to read some of their articles or perhaps thinking of contacting them to get one of their product brochures or a free quote you’ll be pleased to know that they also offer a 60 day satisfaction guarantee and a 5 year warranty on all purchases.

EcoSmarte definitely seems to be a company that believes in and stands by their product. Do visit the site if you have a pool or if you’re thinking of installing a pool in the near future.
