Busy weekend updating 16 WP blogs!

September 16, 2008 by Tricia

You know what I did this weekend?  I updated 116 blogs to either WP version 2.6.1 or the latest version 2.6.2.  That was a huge task!

Luckily I was able to do half of them using my C-panel Fantastico section – those were the blogs that were only updated to 2.6.1 and the rest I updated by using the WordPress Automatic Update plugin.  I used the plugin for the first time … otherwise my updates would have all been manual updates.  Ugh … that would have taken even longer.

Unfortunately I’ve discovered a small problem or two. The blogs that I updated using the Automatic update plugin won’t go into the new Turbo mode using Google Gears. After reading the WordPress.org forums it seems that the update plugin doesn’t update all of the files so I might have a few missing. So it looks like I’ll have to manually update anyway.

I also discovered that one of the blogs that I used the autoupdate plugin on has a widget problem. The site looks fine from the front end, but when I try to edit the widgets in the right column I can only see a few of the widgets. There’s an error message that I’m missing one of the files that one of the codes i have in a text widget calls for (the file is not missing BTW – it’s where it should be).  I can’t see any of the widgets below the one that WP thinks has an error in it.

So I don’t know if that’s an error caused by using the Automatic Upgrade Plugin – if it is, it will soon be corrected when I manually update the iste, or if it’s a problem with either the theme that I’m using and or WP 2.6.2 itself.

I hope that I can fix the problem with a manual update of the WP files.  Otherwise I’m going to have to go searching to see if anyone else has this problem and try to track down a way to fix it.  Or wait until WP updates again so I can see if this problem goes away. Big drag not being able to edit the content of you widgets! Grrrr

Oh I also discovered that when creating a post in WP 2.6.2 that if you accidentally forget to give your post a title there’s no going back!  You used to be able to edit the post slug. The only time I ever did that was on the rare occasion that I posted without a title. I’d just go back, remove the slug and save the post after giving it a title and the post slug would contain the post title as it should.   It seems that there’s no post slug area in the new WP.  So the post I made a mistake on now has a numerical url. Yuck … not good SEO.

Exciting weekend huh?  Now it’s time for me to go and eat dinner. I made homemade spaghetti sauce so we’re having a delicious spaghetti dinner.  We’ll watch House while we eat … can’t wait to see the premiere!

We had a little outdoor get together on Saturday

August 25, 2008 by Tricia

Saturday was such a beautiful day here in Toronto that I brought my laptop outside in the late afternoon so that I could enjoy the day, the garden and get some work done while I was at it. Needless to say I didn’t get much work done!

We’d been expecting a friend to come over for the weekend. He was going to arrive on Friday night and spend the whole weekend, but his parents got word that they could move into their retirement home so he pushed back his visit by a day so he could help them move. Unfortunately the moving went into overtime and he wasn’t able to make it to our house for the visit.

Since Chris is on holidays this week he really wanted to do something on Saturday so he ended up inviting his cousin and our 15 year old God son over for dinner.

That of course is why I didn’t get any work done! My god son loves movies and he talked my ear off for oh … 6 hours about all his favorite movies, actors, scenes from movies and even brought over part of his movie collection so that he could show us movie trailers!

It was all a little too much movie talk for me, but I did come up with an idea for him. I suggested that he start a blog and write movie reviews. He basically memories all the lines and scenes in movies (oh did I mention he’s legally blind?) so he’d be a great reviewer … or at least I think so after hearing how he describes movies all these years.

In the rare non-movie discussion that I got to participate in I learned of a new health drink by Orovo that I might try. It might help with my Crohns, certainly it probably won’t hurt to try it.

We ended up having dinner outdoors. Chris, his cousin and I had steak and our God son had hamburgers. We all had fresh corn on the cob as well (not great for my Crohn’s but I love it). It was a great dinner.

Oh … I also had a couple of beers that night. I don’t drink much in part because of all the medications I’m on and also because it just hits me too hard. So by the time our guests left around Midnight I was feeling tipsy and tired! Guess I’m a cheap date!

Hows the weather in your area? We have a cool and rainy summer, but the end of last week and most of the weekend was fairly nice (we’re back to too cool again) so that’s why I had to take advantage of Saturday being such a nice day. Who knows when it might be nice enough to sit outside into the night entertaining guests.

Change of heart: I suddenly like peanut butter after hating it all my life

August 1, 2008 by Tricia

It’s four in the morning? What am I still doing up?

If I was asleep I wouldn’t have just had a snack disaster! Well … it was a disaster for my taste buds at the very least.

I’ve hated peanut butter all my life. I’ve even written posts about how much I hate peanut butter, but much to my surprise, about two months ago I suddenly got a craving for peanut butter. Why … I’m not sure. No, I’m not pregnant, but I did wonder if I was when these strange yearnings to eat peanut butter started.

The only thing I’ll eat peanut butter on is soda crackers. You know those little crackers you buy to crumble into your soup? The thought of eating a peanut butter cookie or peanut butter or just about anything with peanut butter still disgusts me … but I’ll eat it on crackers it seems.

Usually when I buy a box of soda crackers I get the unsalted kind. We usually only use them in soup. My husbands favorite soup is Chicken noodle and mine is Vegetable and both are way too high in sodium (well unless I make a homemade soup that is) so why add even more salt by using salted crackers.

We ran out of crackers last week and on Sunday when we were grocery shopping the store only had salted crackers. I decided to buy them just in case my peanut butter craving hit again.

Big Mistake!

It tastes horrible! I know because I just had a snack and ughh … that was gross! If I had spread peanut butter on salted soda crackers when I first had my peanut butter craving two month ago my desire to eat peanut butter would have ended right then and there. Absolutely disgusting I tell ‘ya.

Isn’t that weird though? I suddenly got a craving to eat a food that I’ve avoided and hated my whole life for no apparent reason.

My craving really startled my husband. He can still remember me telling him to get away from me or to go and brush his teeth after he’d eaten peanut butter just because I couldn’t stand the smell of it on his breath, so imagine his surprise when I wanted to buy a big jar of the stuff?

Perhaps using peanut butter on my puppies toys (as a treat and to keep her occupied and out of my hair for a while) might have helped trigger this craving?

Have you ever had a sudden change in taste? Craved a food that you hated? If so, what was it?

It pays to lend our barbecue to neighbors!

May 28, 2008 by Tricia

On Sunday night Chris and I were going to have a nice steak barbecue dinner to celebrate my Google Adsense Break through. However, our neighbor had borrowed our BBQ as he was having a big family dinner and much to his dismay he discovered that his barbecue had suddenly stopped working.

Lucky for us, when Chris went over to get our BBQ he asked us if we wanted to join them for dinner as he’d cooked up several extra steaks, chicken breasts and lamb. I wasn’t feeling that great and since I’d meant our dinner to be a bit of a celebration we declined his offer for dinner. So … he loaded up two plates full of meats, grilled veggies and desserts!

The food he gave us was enough for four people!

Needless to say we didn’t barbecue our steak that night. We ate our neighbors bonanza of food. We also opened a bottle of Red Wine. It was an Australian Shiraz-Grenache. The wine was lovely. It reminded me of a beautiful Merlot that some doctors that I used to work with make in their Grimsby Winery – Thirty Bench.

We had a fantastic meal, accompanied by a wine that I’ll be sure to purchase again. In fact we enjoyed that wine so much that I’m thinking of joining a wine club so that I can try new wines regularly. We aren’t big drinkers, but we do enjoy a glass of fine wine every now and then with our meals.

As for that steak that we were going to have on Sunday evening … well we had it this evening. I’d put a marinade on it on Sunday and leaving it on that long turned out to have been a great idea. The steak was great.

I love Toronto

This weeks theme is Important

There are quite a few things that I hold important to me. My husband, family and friends are at the top of the list, however living in a great city such as Toronto is also important. I love this city!

Enjoying the city is important to me too.

Toronto has lovely beaches, parks, hiking and biking trails, fantastic restaurants and entertainment areas (the theatre district is in the top five largest in the world), great clubs and bars if you’re into the nightlife and a world of opportunities as far as employment goes.

As far as I’m concerned Toronto is one of the best cities to live in. There’s always something going on. Throughout the year there are many different festivals ranging from comedy to photography to simply celebrating the city.
