Our little hummingbird

August 24, 2007 by Tricia

As some of you know I have a very nice garden. I’ve been working on it for five years. Unfortunately I’d only seen a hummingbird once in my garden – about two years ago. Ever since then I put in more flowers that hummingbirds like and added another hummingbird feeder to the garden.

Well I finally had some success. Last Sunday I was in the kitchen with my husband when I turned towards the kitchen window and Oh Oh Oh there was a beautiful little hummingbird trying to figure out how to get a drink from the hummingbird feeder.

These aren’t the best photos since I took them so quickly through a not so clean kitchen window, but here they are:

Approaching the feeders drink station:

Hummingbird 8

Ready to have a drink? Or maybe about to leave?

Hummingbird 25

Do you see hummingbirds in your yard? For all I know this one’s been visiting all summer and this is just the first time I’ve been lucky enough to see it.

Balloon Flower - White

I love balloon flowers. I had to stop for a moment to think just how many balloon flower plants I have growing in my front and back gardens and I believe that there are seven plants. Only two of them are white balloon flowers.

I think they are a cheerful little flower. They really do look like a balloon when they develop, and they when they finally open they are bright and cheery.

Have you tried growing balloon flowers?

These are two buildings in downtown Toronto near city hall. I took this photo about a month ago when I was at an outdoor art exhibition.

I like how this photo is a contrast of old and new and how the buildings stand out against that brilliant blue sky behind them. You can even see the clouds reflected in the glass panes of the building on the left if you look closely.

An ornamental seed head

Clematis seed head

I love growing clematis. I think I’ve got seven or eight different vines! Not only do most of them flower prolifically at least twice a year, but when the flowers die off they produce attractive seed heads too.

Obviously this photo above is of a clematis seed head. Isn’t it kind of cute? It’s a bit like a broom or a brush isn’t it?

Do you grow clematis in your garden or on your patio?

The Baronne

Baronne Prevost Rose

I’m showing off my royal roses and flowers this Sunday. One of my sites has a prince and another a royal purple flower.

This rose is called Baronne Prevost and it’s an antique rose with a lovely damask rose scent. I love old roses with their quartered sections. This rose just looks full with many petals but when it first forms the petals are divided into four sections and it’s just lovely.

I think I can almost say that the Baronne is growing into a short tree as it’s holding at about eight feet tall and each year it’s main branches get thicker and thicker. That’s a tree or a large shrub, right?

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.
