Pretty yellow Stella D’ora Daylily

I grow a few clumps of Stella D’ora daylilies throughout my garden and they are wonderfully simple flowers to care for because they do well in both moderate to full sun, don’t need a whole lot of care and they manage to rebloom several times throughout the growing season.

I tend to grow my Stella D’ora’s near plants such as Hostas and heucheras. They also look quite nice beside lavender or purple Salvia.

I think in all I grow about five different types of daylilies, but even though Stella is quite common, I still think it’s one of the easiest and nicest day lilies that I grow.

Do you grow day lilies in your garden?

All kinds of Tulips

I think for many people, when they think of spring flowers they think of tulips. Am I right?

I grow several different types of tulips. There are fringed ones, lily tipped, long stem, short stemmed or dwarf tulips, regular garden variety tulips … I’m sure there’s another type or two that I grow.

Did you know that some tulips bloom in early spring, others in mid spring and that there are also late spring varieties? I grow some of each so that my garden is filled with tulips for the majority of the spring season.

I believe the white tulip that I included above is a lily tipped tulip. Some of it’s outer petals are longer than the rest and they arch up above the flower elegantly.

Do you grow tulips in your garden? Do you sometimes buy bulbs that have been forced so that you can have tulip or other spring bulbs blooming inside your house in late winter?

On the boardwalk

This weeks theme is Wooden

I took this photo of the Boardwalk at the beach in Toronto last August. It was an overcast August day. Well, if I remember correctly it was more than overcast. It rained most of the day. Still we had relatives in town and they wanted to meet some of our other friends at the Beach Club so off we went.

We ended up sitting outside on the patio drinking beer as the rain fell upon us. We were under umbrellas but as you know when it rains out the water drips off the edges of the umbrella and I ended up sitting in one of the drippy areas! It was still a fun day.

So this is Toronto’s boardwalk. It’s wooden. I’m certain with our weather they must have to replace several of the boards each year. It must cost the city quite a bit of money but it’s such a lovely area and so well loved by city residents and tourists alike that I’m sure we’ll have the boardwalk for a long time to come.

I’m not sure how long the boardwalk is, but it’s got to be at least 3 miles long if not more.

Probably from Spring onward, once the weather gets nice, we’ll be talking our puppy down to the beach and the boardwalk every weekend. I’m sure she’ll love to swim in the water and walk along the beach.

Now that’s a strange hitchhiker!

I love photos of animals in unusual places or doing funny things.

Take this for example.

You have to wonder just how often a bird has a chance to land or ride on a swimming turtle. I’m sure it doesn’t happen often and even less often is it captured on film!

A feast for the dogs

Wordless Wednesday

What’s the old saying about a dogs breakfast?

Well this sure isn’t breakfast. Looks more like a dinner feast for the dogs doesn’t it?

I think that if I set a fully cooked turkey down on the table in front of my Lab puppy it wouldn’t be sitting so patiently in the chair! She’d be right up on the table with her face deep in the turkey and I’m sure she’d think it was pure heaven!

My mother in law actually lost a turkey she’d just cooked, except she lost hers to a cat! The cat jumped up on the counter where the turkey was cooling and while no one was in the room it proceeded to eat about half the turkey! I can’t remember if it was Thanks Giving or Christmas when it happened, but needless to say we ended up having a much different main course than was planned.
