We had a little outdoor get together on Saturday

August 25, 2008 by Tricia

Saturday was such a beautiful day here in Toronto that I brought my laptop outside in the late afternoon so that I could enjoy the day, the garden and get some work done while I was at it. Needless to say I didn’t get much work done!

We’d been expecting a friend to come over for the weekend. He was going to arrive on Friday night and spend the whole weekend, but his parents got word that they could move into their retirement home so he pushed back his visit by a day so he could help them move. Unfortunately the moving went into overtime and he wasn’t able to make it to our house for the visit.

Since Chris is on holidays this week he really wanted to do something on Saturday so he ended up inviting his cousin and our 15 year old God son over for dinner.

That of course is why I didn’t get any work done! My god son loves movies and he talked my ear off for oh … 6 hours about all his favorite movies, actors, scenes from movies and even brought over part of his movie collection so that he could show us movie trailers!

It was all a little too much movie talk for me, but I did come up with an idea for him. I suggested that he start a blog and write movie reviews. He basically memories all the lines and scenes in movies (oh did I mention he’s legally blind?) so he’d be a great reviewer … or at least I think so after hearing how he describes movies all these years.

In the rare non-movie discussion that I got to participate in I learned of a new health drink by Orovo that I might try. It might help with my Crohns, certainly it probably won’t hurt to try it.

We ended up having dinner outdoors. Chris, his cousin and I had steak and our God son had hamburgers. We all had fresh corn on the cob as well (not great for my Crohn’s but I love it). It was a great dinner.

Oh … I also had a couple of beers that night. I don’t drink much in part because of all the medications I’m on and also because it just hits me too hard. So by the time our guests left around Midnight I was feeling tipsy and tired! Guess I’m a cheap date!

Hows the weather in your area? We have a cool and rainy summer, but the end of last week and most of the weekend was fairly nice (we’re back to too cool again) so that’s why I had to take advantage of Saturday being such a nice day. Who knows when it might be nice enough to sit outside into the night entertaining guests.

The roses are blooming again

It looks like most of my roses are starting to bloom again or are in the process of getting ready to bloom, so my garden is looking quite nice these days.

This rose is called White Dawn and it produces lovely large white roses:

Another very pretty rose in my garden is the Hybrid Tea called Tiffany. This rose is having it’s best year ever in my garden. It’s produced a number of blooms and I believe it’s giving off more scent than it usually does this summer.

Isn’t Tiffany a lovely rose?

The rose named Prince Napoleon

This rose, Prince Napoleon, is an antique rose. It’s a climber that reaches about 10 to 12 feet tall in my garden each year.

I love this roses delicate pink flowers. It also has a true rose scent that perfumes my garden nicely each morning or after I’ve watered.

That’s one trick that I’ve learned over the years … If you are going to be sitting out in the garden and you want to enjoy the smell of your scented plants water the garden about an hour before you want to sit outside. This seems to work best in the early morning or evening. I’ve done this a few times when we’ve been expecting guests or having an outdoor dinner party and everyone always seems to appreciate the beautiful scent of the flowers.

70’s and 80’s fashions are trendy again

August 15, 2008 by Tricia

Earlier today I was reading one of my favorite Canadian fashion magazines. It’s called LouLou.

Now I’m not usually one to read fashion magazines but earlier this year I subscribed to a few because I have some blogs that are related to shopping and well … if you read those kinds of magazines you’ll be up on the latest fashions, trends and deals.

I must say that the fashions this year all seem to be late 70’s to 80’s oriented. As I browsed through my magazine they were showing photos of models in mid-calf skirts and mini skirts and the photos looked almost exactly like ones I’d seen a couple of decades ago in fashion mags.

I actually really like some of the fashion trends for this year, but I must say I’m having flashbacks when I look at some of the designs!

I was only a teenager in the early 80’s, but I was up on current fashions, even if I did have to work with a very limited budget.

It’s not just clothing trends that have a 70’s to 80’s trend – jewelery, makeup and even perfumes are taking their cue from former decades. I can remember when Oscar de la Renta first came out with the perfume Paris, and when wearing Musk scented perfumes were all the rage.

What ’70’s or ’80’s fashion trend are you happy to see back? Are there any styles or trends that you’d gladly never see again? You know like Parachute pants or shoulder pads, big hair, the mullet? 😉

Potted plants on my front porch

Each year, in early summer, I spend some time planting annuals in large pots to put on or near my front porch.

I also do all of the hanging baskets and window boxes at the same time. It’s quite a chore as I use window boxes along the side of my driveway between my house and the neighbors. The boxes are on the ground, but they work well to create a large display of flowers in the otherwise dark driveway. (I plant impatiens in those planter boxes).

I’m quite happy with my flower arrangements this year. Here’s some pictures of the planters closest to my front door.

As you can see the planters are filled with Petunias, Geranium, Impatiens and Spikes.

Having a potted planter near the front steps isn’t necessary, but I think one or two well placed planters help make the front of a house look more welcoming.

Do you use planters at the front of your house or on your steps?
