I might go to Cancun in February!

October 25, 2009 by Tricia

My husband and I were talking to some friends of ours earlier today and they invited us to go with them on Vacation in February.

I haven’t been on a holiday for ages and I could sure use a change of scenery … especially in the dead of winter when it’s frightfully cold here in Toronto!

The only problem is that Chris and I are kind of cash strapped these days … although things have started to look a little better in the last week or so. Maybe by the time February rolls around we’ll be doing better financially?

The good thing about their invite is that they have a time share in Cancun and the house has extra bedrooms so it wouldn’t cost us anything for accommodations … we’d only have to pay for our airfare and for me at least some cheap travel insurance as I can’t travel without since I’ve been so sick lately!

We’ve tentatively said yes to their invite. They know our situation and understand if we can’t make it … but I’m hoping that things will work out. I’m sure we’ll have a great time.

Stuffed after a great Thanks Giving Dinner

October 12, 2009 by Tricia

OMG I’m stuffed! I can barely move after eating a very filling and delicious Thanks Giving dinner.

Yes it’s Thanks Giving weekend here in Canada and it’s one of my favorite holidays. Hey .. any holiday where you get to eat turkey is a great one isn’t it? Yum!

Since it was just Chris and I for Thanks Giving dinner this evening I decided to cook a turkey breast rather than a whole turkey. While the turkey breast was roasting in the oven I made:

  • Mashed potatoes – I always add a tablespoon of Herb and Garlic Philadelphia cream cheese to the mashed potatoes as it makes them delicious.
  • Peas
  • Stuffing – I cheat and use Stove Top Stuffing. Hey it’s good!
  • Cranberry Jelly – another cheat, I used canned.

The only thing we didn’t have was dessert. I haven’t been feeling all that well lately so I certainly wasn’t up to making a pie from scratch and I forgot to add a Pumpkin pie (and light whipped cream) to the grocery list. So no pie – no dessert. Oh well, at least that saves me from having to look up thebest weight loss pill after this meal … or does it! I sure am stuffed and I feel like I gained five pounds!

Nah! There’s no way I ate five pounds of food! It sure feels like it though!

I hope that all of my fellow Canadian visitors had a great Thanks Giving weekend and a great meal to top it off too! My U.S. friends will have to wait a few more weeks for their turkey!

Lovely white phlox in the garden

Well summer’s almost over but you wouldn’t know it if you took a look at my garden.

Most of my plants are still blooming and I expect them to keep blooming and looking fairly nice until late October or even later. Some years I’ve still had roses blooming well into December!

This year my Phlox has been doing well. Often it blooms and then the leaves get covered in powdery mildew and the stalks die down only to regrow slowly hindering further blooms. This year however my Phlox did well and wasn’t affected by powdery mildew very much (my roses on the other hand were!).

Here’s what my Phlox looks like in bloom –

White Phlox 5

Isn’t it lovely? The flower heads are on stalks of about three and a half feet tall and there are usually several blooms on each stalk. I planted the Phlox near my Patio so that I can enjoy the flowers while I sit at my patio table. I also like that they are white flowers … you can still see them fairly well at night so they help highlight the garden.

Do you garden? What’s blooming in your garden right now?

Covered in Bruises!

September 15, 2009 by Tricia

As most of my regular readers know, we have a Labrador Retriever. She just turned two, two weeks ago, so she’s finally starting to calm down a bit, but not nearly enough for me!

She’s a pretty good dog, fairly obedient and definitely regards me as the Alpha in the house … except every once in a while she’ll try to pull one over on me.

Her quest for power usually takes place in the evening when I’m lying on the couch watching TV. She’ll jump up on the couch beside me and make her wookie (whooo whoo, grughhh) sounds to indicate that she wants to play and doesn’t want to take no for an answer. Then she’ll try to climb on top of me or over me to reach the top of the pillow that I’m usually lying on while on the the couch.

Once she’s perched near my head she’ll sit there contentedly, occasionally turning around to lick my face, ears and neck. Labs are kind of slobbery so I need to wipe my face after a lick attack!

The bruises I’m getting are from her walking over me when she’s instant on playing and getting really close to me so that she can give me a lick attack.

When she tries to do this I usually try to hold her back by putting my leg up to bar her from climbing over me but this past week she just keeps coming! She’ll even fake me out by looking like she’s just going to sit down beside me when I’ve said no and once I relax she just jumps on me! She’s a smart dog!

My husband thinks she just does this because she “loves” me … but I think it’s a little bit of doggy dominance coming out. As I said above she’s a fairly obedient (yet hyper and excitable) dog.

She weighs about 70lb and while my husband doesn’t seem to find her walking on him painful it really hurts me when she walks on my legs, stomach and even my chest. There’s been many a time when I’ve woken in the morning wondering why one of my boobs is sore and then I remember that my dog walked on it the night before! LOL

I also take medications for my Crohn’s disease that make my blood a little thinner so I’m more prone to bruising as it is, let alone having a large dog jumping all over me.

I have to find a way to stop her from jumping on me like this. When she does manage to walk all over me this is the only real time that she is being Alpha or has any kind of dominance over me.

Any suggestions from other dog owners out there?

Why can’t people just get along?

August 6, 2009 by Tricia

There are days that I just hate the internet!

Seriously! As some of you know I have several websites and blogs that I try to maintain on a daily or at least weekly basis. On top of that there’s all the social sites that one needs to be a member of in order to list and promote your sites and make connections with other bloggers and webmasters.

Not to mention forums and maybe even discussion or mailing lists!

It’s the mailing lists that have me frustrated today. A long long time ago (1995 or so) I was really into reptiles … lizards to be perfectly honest. You see I’m allergic to cats, dogs and birds (yes I do have a dog now but I live on allergy meds!) so reptiles were the perfect and in fact pretty much only pet I could have.

To make a long story short – I fell in love with Chinese water dragons and Iguanas. Most people buying reptile pets don’t have a lot of knowledge about their care and it’s still hard to find good information on the net, in a pet store or even from a Veterinarian about their care …. so I learned as much as I could about Chinese Water Dragons and started my Huge website in 1995. As my knowledge grew so did my site.

Along the way I started a mailing list for Water dragon keepers. I also took over a failing Turtle list and an Uromastyx lizard list. The turtle list imploded a few years ago when people couldn’t get along and now I think the same things going to happen with the uromastyx list.

Have you ever been in a forum or on a discussion list where the posts got heated and people started picking on one another … well that’s what’s happening on my Uro list.

I only have a few rules – stay on topic, no off topic posts, be polite and take heated discussions off the list. I don’t think that’s too hard to follow – right?

Well I just gave the list a big colon cleanse with a terse ADMIN post telling them to behave or else I’d shut down the list. It’s their choice!

Do any of you run forums or online discussion lists or mailing lists. Aren’t they hard to manage when people start OT discussions or arguing? Geesh!
