Dreaming of a warm vacation

February 4, 2011 by Tricia

I was just saying how cold it’s been here in Toronto this winter. We certainly aren’t used to it being this cold. We’ve had it lucky the last few years as it’s actually been quite a bit warmer than usual the last few years during the winter … I guess we’re out of luck this year.

Well .. considering how cold it is this year it’s making me yearn to go on a holiday. On a whim I went looking at Hawaii cruise deals and flights to the Caribbean. We can’t afford a tropical holiday this year … but I can dream … especially on the days when the wind is blowing so very cold outside my door.

January sales driving me nuts

January 15, 2011 by Tricia

I keep getting emails and flyers from local companies about huge January sales. Usually I try to ignore these kinds of things, especially since we don’t have a lot of extra money to spend on things that we don’t really need, but as you probably know, the sales at this time of year are well, spectacular, so it’s hard to ignore some of the sales that I’m seeing!

I really want a flip camcorder so I keep drifting over to websites to check out prices on the one that I want … then for some reason I look at the video games like psp and xbox kinect. I don’t know why .. I mean, I already have a wii and I don’t use it as much as I should so why am I looking at other video games? LOL

Do sales attract you? By this I mean do they make you look even if you know you probably won’t buy anything?

Liked the first turkey so much I’m cooking another

January 3, 2011 by Tricia

My house is filled with the smell of a roasting turkey. Yep … I’m cooking the first turkey of the new year.

Yeah … I’m cooking again! I cooked a turkey just before Christmas – on December 23rd – I called it my Festivus Turkey and now I guess this is my “after” New Year turkey.

The truth is … we actually enjoy eating turkey (I brined this one so it should be extremely moist) and I bought the turkey at a good price (15 pounder for about 12 bucks) and since my husband was on temporary lay off from work for the last two weeks of December we’re on a tight budget. Eating two turkeys for three or four weeks is fine with us if it saves us money … and hey … turkey is good for you, isn’t it?

Now if that darn new internal thermometer alarm would stop going off early I could get some work done. I’m trying to install an update for my scanner software but the thermometer that I put in the turkey leg keeps going off … even though the turkey hasn’t been in the oven long enough (well it probably has now, but when it was only in the oven for 30 minutes I new that was too soon!).

Do you ever eat turkey when it’s not a holiday meal? I mean like us – in January?

I think I missed out on some big sales today

December 18, 2010 by Tricia

I just happened to turn on the news and they were doing a report about how it’s “Super Saturday here in Canada” or for all I know, maybe it’s super Saturday all over North America.

I guess it’s a big shopping day full of super sales. I did not know that. Now I’m upset that I decided to put off the last of my shopping until Monday! Maybe I could have got a really good deal or two if I’d gone shopping today instead.

I know that I’ve been receiving some email flyers that have some amazing deals on desktop computers and other electronics. I was seriously tempted to buy an XBox the other day when I saw one on sale. I’d use it – but probably not quite often enough to make it worth buying- especially when we really don’t have any spare money right now.

Did you go shopping today? Did you catch any good sales?

It’s been ages since I made a cake

December 8, 2010 by Tricia

I was just saying on my main blog how I’ve been on a baking spree lately.

I haven’t really baked deserts in ages. I used to make lots of breads, and pastries but I haven’t done anything like that for at least five years and it’s been ages since I made a cake. So it came as quite a surprise this past Sunday when I found myself making a Chocolate Zucchini Bundt cake!

It turned out fantastic. I actually don’t think I’ve made a cake since i was in my teens! I turned it out on a plate and glazed it .. man it looked and tasted fantastic. I should have gotten out one of digital cameras to take a picture but by the time I was glazing it it was about midnight … and I was so tired!

My husband and I tried the cake after dinner on Monday night and this evening. I think i should cut it in half and freeze the rest … honestly … we shouldn’t be eating cake every night- even if it’s just a thin slice.
