Midnight got her first heartworm test

May 30, 2008 by Tricia

We took Midnight to the vet earlier this evening. She had to have her first heartworm test.

It was actually the first time she’d ever had blood work done too and she was nervous. She’s usually pretty good when we go to the vet, but it seems pretty much each time we go she sees a different vet. I don’t know why, but she was stress from the moment we went into the exam room.

Chris and the doctor struggled to get her up on the exam table and then she leaned into Chris so that she could be as far away from the vet as possible. It’s too bad because this vet was really nice. Our favorite vet at the clinic left recently to start his own clinic in Scarborough … so we probably won’t be going to see him since it’s so far. Since this vet was nice we’ll try to make more appointments with him if we can.

The other vets at the clinic all seem to be chauvinistic and talk down to me … or don’t even talk to me when I ask questions. No, this isn’t my imagination. Chris has noticed and it’s ticked him off .. especially since I’m a nurse and I can understand the information that the doctors are telling us .. but when one won’t talk to me it’s kind of hard not to get ticked off.

Anyway … Midnight was very good for her blood test. Didn’t even flinch – which I presume means the doctor did a good job with that needle.

Hopefully the heartworm test will be negative. We left the clinic with a box of heartworm pills – Sentinel brand. We didn’t get the Heartgard brand as it has Ivermectin in it and I’ve heard about far too many exotic animals and a few dogs that have died after being treated with Ivermectin … so no, not taking any chances with my puppy!

Funny thing … before we left Midnight warmed up to the doctor and started playing with him. Unfortunately she took a shining to his watch. I think it was a Patek and well … she knocked it off his wrist. Oops!

That’s one tired dog!

May 25, 2008 by Tricia

Our Lab puppy Midnight got a lot of exercise today. Chris took her out to the park not just once, but three times! He also took her for at least three walks.

She’s pooped!

Midnight is so tired that she actually put herself to bed. She went into her crate at about 11 pm and she’s been lying in her doggy bed ever since. She almost never goes to bed until my husband heads for bed … then I usually take her outside to do her business, give her a cookie and then off to her crate she goes.

To go to bed without her cookie? That’s almost unheard of!

The beef bone was bigger than the puppy!

May 19, 2008 by Tricia

Just a follow up on Midnight and her big bone … this is what she looked like back in January when we first bought her a big bone to gnaw on:

The bone was just about as long as she was and it was so heavy she couldn’t pick it up or move it around much.

This time around the bone is about the same size – 2+ feet in length, but she’s grown in the almost four months that have elapsed and this times she’s the one that’s a bit bigger than the bone. It’s still pretty big for her and I expect it will keep her busy for quite a while.

Later today I’ll try to take another picture of her and her new bone so you can see the difference.

Midnight got a Mammoth Bone

May 19, 2008 by Tricia

Yesterday afternoon we went to Petsmart. Midnight, our Lab Pup, was running out of her dog biscuits and we’d decided to take a look at choke collar since she’s been pulling so much when we take her for walks.

We’ve been using a Sporn harness on her since December, but lately even that wasn’t working. So when we got to the store (BTW this is the first time I was in Petsmart since my major allergic reaction) we ran into one of the Petsmart associates and asked about choke collars. The girl that was helping us suggested we try the Comfort wrap harness.

She went so far as to put the harness on Midnight and adjusted all the straps so it fit correctly. We then walked around the store to test it out. During our walk Midnight played with a few of the other dogs in the store. One small husky in particular was her main playmate – biting her ears! The harness held up and we didn’t feel the pull as much as we did with the Sporn harness so we decided to buy it.

We also decided to get Midnight another Mammoth bone. We got her one in January and there’s only a stub left that’s about 8 inches long. She’s barely been chewing on it lately. So … we took the plunge and bought her a big bone that’s at least 2 feet long.

A while after we got home from Petsmart and a side trip to the grocery store we fed Midnight and then gave her, her new bone. That was at 7 pm. It’s now a bit after midnight and we’ve just taken the bone away.

She never even asked to go outside to relieve herself the whole time she was chewing that darn bone! Oh, we did interrupt her and took her out to do her business twice during the five hour chewing session. I don’t think she would have moved otherwise.

Finally when I last took her out a few minutes ago I asked Chris to take the bone away and hide it on our enclosed back porch. She’s sniffing around trying to find it, but not complaining. It’s time for her to settle down and go to sleep!

I guess our puppy won’t be distracting me as much as she normally does for much of the next week as I’m sure she’ll be into chewing her bone for long periods.

Diet pills for dogs?

May 13, 2008 by Tricia

You know, before we got our puppy I didn’t really know how many different products were out there for cats and dogs. We’d always kept reptiles and this is our first experience with having a dog for both of us.

The pet market is a huge industry! I knew it was, but I didn’t realize how many companies specialize in clothing for pets and pet medicines and so on. People will do anything for their pets won’t they?

I was really surprised a few months ago when I was flipping through a magazine and I saw an ad for diet pills for dogs. I think there’s television commercials for the product too.

I have to say that I really don’t agree with the idea of giving a dog diet pills. I mean unless it’s in poor health and that causes it to be very inactive. Putting the dog on a diet, not feeding it table scraps and extra snacks and taking it out for more walks is the way to go.

What do you think of diet pills for dogs?
