Starting to get back into a routine

October 9, 2008 by Tricia

Well … about a week ago I told you guys that I was going to change my whole routine -from how I sleep, to how I blog right down to getting some regular exercise.

So it’s only a week but I have made some progress. No major changes on the sleep front unfortunately, that’s still messed up, but I have gotten into a little better routine with my blogging and I pulled out the elliptical machine and started using it for 30 minutes each day. I do hope to build up to an hour or so of doing ellipticals each day or at least most days, but that will take some time.

Now if I can only get our dog Midnight to stop pretty much pulling me off my feet every time I take her outside we could start taking longer walks again. Earlier today she got excited when she saw a woman walking two dogs and at first she obeyed my command to sit and not bark, but I don’t know if one of the dogs made some kind of move when I wasn’t looking, but all of a sudden Midnight stood up and started running towards the other dogs with me dragging behind. The leash slide through my hand so fast that three of my fingers on my left hand still hurt. Boy was I mad at Midnight!

That’s what I’m dealing with on that front … but she’s pulling less and less each month so maybe walks with her can become part of my fitness routine again soon too. And of course, hopefully I start to sleep better again too.

Are you working on any goals to improve your health?

I seriously thought about getting a treadmill today

September 27, 2008 by Tricia

Chris and I were out earlier today doing our regular weekend shopping and while we were in a department store to get Chris a new pair of pants for work, I wandered around until I came across a sale on exercise equiptment.

Good thing our money’s tight right now or else I would have tried talking Chris into letting me buy one of the treadmills that were on sale. Yeah, I know … we have an elliptical machine and I’ve been using it again in the last few weeks, but a treadmill would be a good piece of exercise equiptment to have too. Chris would like it better than the elliptical, I’m sure.

Heck, I’ve even heard of people training their dogs to use the treadmill. That would certainly come in handy in the winter on a day when there was a big snow storm … ’cause I don’t take the dog for long walks through streets and sidewalks covered in un-shoveled snow … it’s just too hard to walk in! Midnight and I could both get a work out on the treadmill on snow days. LOL

Do you have any fitness equiptment in your home? Do you use it or has it become a place to hang your laundry?

Pet Alert: Some wood glues are toxic to your pet

September 19, 2008 by Tricia

I was just reading the ASPCA newsletter that I get each week and they had an article about how toxic some of the glues that we use in our homes can be to our pets. The focus was on wood glue and an ingredient that isn’t always listed on the label.

Here’s an exerpt of the story:

Home Improvement: Keep Your Pet Safe from Toxic Glues

As do-it-yourself home improvement projects become more popular, pet parents may unwittingly expose their furry friends to dangerous tools and tricks of the trade. One such product is polyurethane glue, a water resistant adhesive that’s a favorite of woodworkers, but especially toxic to dogs and cats.

According to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), pet poisonings from wood glues—and other adhesives containing the substance diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI)—are pervasive. In the last twelve months, the APCC has treated nearly 100 cases of pets who’ve ingested expanding glues. Of those incidents, 98% involved dogs and 78% were evaluated at high or medium risk for developing severe, life-threatening clinical effects.

Polyurethane glue—also known by brand names like Gorilla Glue and Elmer’s Pro-Bond—is prized for its ability to bond tightly to wood. If eaten, however, the glue expands in the stomach’s warm, moist environment and forms a softball-sized lump. A dog who eats even a small amount of MDI-based adhesive can experience severe gastrointestinal problems resulting in blockages. This disturbing scenario most often requires emergency surgery to remove the mass.

Pet parents should treat any expanding adhesive as a potential hazard, since the offending chemical MDI is not always listed on product labels. Like all toxic household products, wood glue should be stored in a secure cabinet to prevent your furry beloveds from coming into contact with it. If you suspect your pet has ingested polyurethane glue, please call your vet or the ASPCA’s 24-hour poison hotline at (888) 426-4435.

I’ve always assumed that any toxic substances would be listed on the label of products used for repairs around the home and so on, but I guess I’m mistaken. Still, as the article recommends, I always keep any products that i suspect might have harmful chemicals in cupboards or storage cabinets that our dog cannot get into.

Horses in the city

September 2, 2008 by Tricia

On Saturday Chris and I had a leisurely day. No plans, just enjoying a nice warm summer day.

Late in the afternoon Chris decided that we should go to a place called “Sunnybrook Farm”. It’s part of a park and there’s a horse stable there and I guess members can ride the horses. We just went there to observe. We wanted to take our puppy to see the horses. We thought she’d enjoy seeing a different kind of animal and I think we were right.

here’s one of the horse that was wandering around in the open coral.

I just love horses and I must admit that I haven’t seen one in person in a very long time. We stood watching the horses for quite a while, then we went for a hike in the adjoining park, through the forest and even into a creek with our dog.

That’s Chris and Midnight stumbling over rocks in the water. At least they got to cool off! It was a very hot day.

Our Lab puppy sure has grown!

August 6, 2008 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

Midnight at 15 weeks old:

Midnight our Lab puppy

Midnight – a day short of 11 months old (44 weeks)

Midnight relaxing on couch

When she was only 15 months old she barely took up one cushion on our couch and less than a third of the width. Now that she’s 11 months old and much much bigger she takes up more than one couch cushion (more like half the couch when she stretches out!) and almost the full width of the cushion.

BTW she was watching TV while chewing on a toy in both pictures. She loves sitting on the couch and watching TV with us.

She’s grown a lot in the 7+ months that we’ve had her, yet she’s still a little on the small side for a Lab of her age. That’s ok though … she’s very strong. I can’t imagine how much worse it would be to be dragged around by her on a walk if she were even bigger!

She’s cute though! Or I think she is, anyway!
