My dog is a nut!

December 13, 2009 by Tricia

My dog is a nut … I’m sure that any other Labrador Retriever owners out there feel the same about their precious pet.

I’m biased, but I think she’s really smart .. smart enough to purposely ignore us when we tell her something, yet completely understand if there’s a food treat involved. LOL Midnight even knows how to lie! When she was a puppy she’d fake pee, crouching down on the ground in a pee making position so that we’d think she went .. yet she didn’t realize she was on snow and that we’d see that there was nothing beneath her. I’m sure she just did that for a trip outside.

Last week, when I was upstairs having a shower our Lab came up for a visit. She’s only recently been permitted to come upstairs so it’s a big deal for her. I guess I didn’t close the bathroom door fully (hey it was just me and her in the house) so she pushed the door open and the next thing I knew there as a dog head pushing the shower curtains aside to see what I was up to in there.

After a moment or two of watching the “rain” come down on me, she decided to jump into the tub! Yeah, I had a dog in the shower with me. It was a little weird, but I didn’t mind all that much.

Since she was in the shower I thought about giving her a bath, after all, I was dressed for it! However, she stayed near the end of the bathtub, away from the shower water. Did I tell you that while she loves swimming and water in general, she doesn’t seem to like rain? So we nixed the doggy bath idea.

It took me a few minutes to get her out of the bath/shower once I was done. I think she’s a little nervous to jump over the side of the tub. Once she did jump out she slipped on the tile flooring a bit, since her feet were wet. Just that alone might be enough to discourage her from visiting me in the shower again as she got a little scared when she slipped and once she’s scared of something she avoids it. Luckily she hasn’t encountered much that’s scared her.

Do you have a silly dog? Has your dog ever jumped into the shower or bath with you? If so, what did you do?

What a beautiful weekend (and our injured dog)

November 8, 2009 by Tricia

It’s beautiful here in Toronto this weekend … it’s like a very late Indian Summer. The sun is just about to set, but it’s still 17 C (63 F) out- and that’s pretty warm for November!

If only it would stay this warm instead of getting cold again soon! Oh well .. at least it’s still supposed to be warm tomorrow before it slowly begins to cool off again. We’ll make the most of it I guess.

Actually, since it was so nice out today my husband decided to take our dog to the beach for a run and swim. Unfortunately, after being out swimming in the Lake for two hours or so, she limped back to shore. All of her feet were bleeding! It turns out she somehow scraped all of her toenails off to the nub! My poor baby.

We’ve taken her to Cherry Beach here in Toronto to swim in Lake Ontario several times – in the same area – and nothing like this has ever happened before. Maybe there’s more rocks under the water right now? Very strange.

So after cleaning up her feet she’s just resting beside me on the couch. My husband and I are just staying in the living room watching TV so that she doesn’t get up and start trying to follow us around. I figure if her feet have a rest maybe they’ll feel a little better. I hope!

My husband has control of the remote so I’m not having much fun! He’s flipping between sports news, music docs and uh infomercials for things like a dip machine – which BTW I think he’s interested in getting! LOL Why do guys always change channels like every five minutes?

If our dog, Midnight, hadn’t hurt herself so badly I’m sure we would have spent the last couple of hours outside doing the last of our garden work. I still have some mighty tall sunflowers to chop down!

Did you have nice weather this weekend?

Covered in Bruises!

September 15, 2009 by Tricia

As most of my regular readers know, we have a Labrador Retriever. She just turned two, two weeks ago, so she’s finally starting to calm down a bit, but not nearly enough for me!

She’s a pretty good dog, fairly obedient and definitely regards me as the Alpha in the house … except every once in a while she’ll try to pull one over on me.

Her quest for power usually takes place in the evening when I’m lying on the couch watching TV. She’ll jump up on the couch beside me and make her wookie (whooo whoo, grughhh) sounds to indicate that she wants to play and doesn’t want to take no for an answer. Then she’ll try to climb on top of me or over me to reach the top of the pillow that I’m usually lying on while on the the couch.

Once she’s perched near my head she’ll sit there contentedly, occasionally turning around to lick my face, ears and neck. Labs are kind of slobbery so I need to wipe my face after a lick attack!

The bruises I’m getting are from her walking over me when she’s instant on playing and getting really close to me so that she can give me a lick attack.

When she tries to do this I usually try to hold her back by putting my leg up to bar her from climbing over me but this past week she just keeps coming! She’ll even fake me out by looking like she’s just going to sit down beside me when I’ve said no and once I relax she just jumps on me! She’s a smart dog!

My husband thinks she just does this because she “loves” me … but I think it’s a little bit of doggy dominance coming out. As I said above she’s a fairly obedient (yet hyper and excitable) dog.

She weighs about 70lb and while my husband doesn’t seem to find her walking on him painful it really hurts me when she walks on my legs, stomach and even my chest. There’s been many a time when I’ve woken in the morning wondering why one of my boobs is sore and then I remember that my dog walked on it the night before! LOL

I also take medications for my Crohn’s disease that make my blood a little thinner so I’m more prone to bruising as it is, let alone having a large dog jumping all over me.

I have to find a way to stop her from jumping on me like this. When she does manage to walk all over me this is the only real time that she is being Alpha or has any kind of dominance over me.

Any suggestions from other dog owners out there?

Dog with a fetish?

July 26, 2009 by Tricia

My Labrador Retriever, Midnight, who’s almost two years old, had developed a fetish. She loves cardboard and won’t leave it alone!

Any time we have some cardboard around – say an empty box for a 12 pack of pop, an empty cereal box or any kind of thick paper she starts jumping around because she wants to take it back to her doggy bed so that she can tear it up!

It’s kind of funny, but it’s gotten to the point where we can’t carry things around without her trying to grab it out of our hands. Now I’m afraid to take her into the pet store too … they have cardboard displays and I think she’ll try to eat them! LOL

Aren’t dogs fun! They’re nuts!

So how do I get her off this cardboard fetish? Actually she’s not too bad. If we say no she won’t keep trying for it … but still it’s a pain when you’re trying to carry something and at first she’s jumping at you. I mean, she’s a 70 lb dog!

What to do?

My dog loves my brother

July 23, 2009 by Tricia

My brother from Vancouver was visiting last weekend and I swear my dog adopted him -and he her!

From the minute the two saw each other it was love at first sight! LOL

My brother was here from Saturday until Monday evening and our Lab, Midnight was at his side every time he was around. Good thing he’s a dog person! He has a 10 year old lab mix at home.

He even took her out for a walk or two. I didn’t expect that at all. Of all the house guests and visitors we’ve had since we got Midnight about a year and a half ago, I’d say that my brother took to our dog the best.

Of course she’s still a little hyper. She’s going to be two at the end of August. We tried asking my brother if his dog did some of the same things she does, but for the most part it sounds like his dog, Danny, was a pretty calm dog. Midnight on the other hand does silly things like blowing bubbles in her water bowl, jumps up and down when she wants us to play with her bone (I have to video tape this, she had all our relatives laughing so hard they were crying on Sunday when they saw my bouncing dog), somersaults on the couch when she wants a rub and so on. Yeah, she’s a nut.

And why do dogs like to lick wounds? As it turns out both my brother and I suffer from psoriasis. My dog is always trying to lick my wrist where my skin is rough and dry from the psoriasis. As for my brother … Midnight spent most of his visit licking his leg where his skin is affected. Now I’m waiting for an email from him to find out if her licking made his leg worse or better. LOL

Has your dog ever become extremely attached to a house guest quickly … and is your dog quirky like mine?
