Weekend plans totally changed – grrrr

July 30, 2010 by Tricia

It looks like I’m going to be on my own this weekend and possibly for a few days next week too.

That’s not the way the weekend was planned originally though …

A friend of my husbands older brother is having this big party on Saturday for his 30th wedding anniversary. He rented a boat to hold the party on in the Muskoka region. Even though the main party is Saturday night it’s pretty much a whole weekend thing since several old friends will be getting together for the first time in several years. I guess it’s kind of like a reunion.

Anyway … Chris brother is driving up today from Chicago and he rented hotel rooms for Chris and I and himself and his son. Unfortunately the hotel isn’t dog friendly so we can’t bring our Lab with us. We also can’t find anyone willing to look after her this weekend since it’s a long weekend here in Canada.

On top of that we were supposed to go to my husband sisters “cottage” (really a trailer in a trailer park in the middle of nowhere) on Sunday through to Tuesday or Wednesday. However, now she’s saying we can’t bring our dog because her husband is allergic to dogs.

She did suggest that we keep our dog outside all the time, but our dog is a “house’ dog and she’s never stayed outside all night so I’m sure she’d be barking her head off. Plus she’s in heat and being up in the middle of nowhere I’d also be worried about coyotes and other wild animals.

So … that means one of us has to stay home to take care of our dog. Of course it’s me …

I was really looking forward to getting out of town for a few days and of course going to the party on Saturday night. I guess Midnight and I will have to have our own Party.

Chris is going to take off early tomorrow morning so I’m going to help him pack tonight. Yeah, he could pack on his own, but I’ve been on trips with him where he forgot t-shirts and once he even forgot to pack underwear .. so uhm .. I think I’ll help him make sure he’s got everything he needs. LOL

The party tomorrow night is formal so I’ll have to pack up a suit and one or two of Chris’ designer ties. Geez … I even had a dress already to go for this party.

If we didn’t have a dog or if we had a reliable pet sitter our plans wouldn’t have been thrown such a curve ball.

Do you have pets? Do you ever have to change your plans because of pet related complications?

Bringing our dog to Woofstock this weekend

June 11, 2010 by Tricia

We’re going to have a busy weekend! Tomorrow we plan on going to WoofStock. It’s the largest festival for dogs in North America.

If you’re in the Toronto area and you have a dog or you’re seriously thinking about getting one then this is an event you should not miss. This will be our third year going to WoofStock.

It’s in Downtown Toronto near the St. Lawrence market. They close off part of Front street and 100’s of vendors set up booths on the street. It’s always crowded with people and their dogs and there’s lots of freebies too. Last year we were given several different types of dog treats, dog foods and even dog toys. It’s the only place where I’ve been able to find a certain liver treat that my dog just goes nuts for.

This year I managed to get our Dog Midnight and my name on the Woofstock VIP list. I’ve never been in the VIP lounge, but it sounds good. I guess we’ll get further discounts on some products and might get some VIP swag.

Each year we come away with bags of food, treats and bones for our dog. I also take lots of pictures of my dog and of other peoples dogs – especially if the dogs are dressed in cute outfits.

The only thing I don’t like about Woofstock is that it’s always so crowded and it always seems to be a hot hot day whenever we go. Of course I don’t mind seeing some of the guys with their dogs who have got to be taking a body building supplement or something. All those muscles. Yum.

On Sunday we might go to Luminato to see some performances or live music. Of course everything depends upon the weather – it’s supposed to rain this weekend. Figures – just when we have major plans to be outside most of the weekend too.

What are you doing this weekend? Will I see you at Woofstock?

We had a scare with our dog today

April 2, 2010 by Tricia

It was really nice here in Toronto today. So nice that when my husband and I were planning on going outside to do some work on our front yard we decided to let our dog sit in the enclosed front porch to watch us work.

We had a scare though.

When my husband opened the screen door our dog ran out of the house! This has only happened once before and luckily, just as she did the one time it happened before she ran onto the sidewalk and then into our driveway towards the backyard.

Sigh of relief!

If she’d run out into the street I think I’d be doing some doggy funeral planning right now. We live on a very busy street and I’d hate to think of what might have happened if she’d run in front of a car.

Our Lab, Midnight is usually pretty good about listening to us. I tell her to sit and stay when I’m opening the outer screen door and she does. I do however usually keep my hand close to her collar so that I can grab her if she decides not to stay put, but she always does. I think what happened today was that my husband forgot to tell her to say and since he’s the one that walks her most often I think she just thought she was going out with him.

Anyway, I’m relieved that my dog is safe.

Have you had any close calls with your dog getting out of the house?

Our dog is finding golf balls in the park

March 3, 2010 by Tricia

My husband does most of the dog walking in this household. Our Lab gets a walk each morning and evening with my husband. If I’m feeling up to it (remember I have Crohn’s so I feel awful quit often) I give her an additional walk in the afternoon.

We try to vary where our dog is walked. It’s never the same route, however, my husband has been taking our Lab to the park just down the street a little more often than he usually does in the dead of winter. Why? Well … since we’ve had an extremely rare lack of snow here in Toronto this winter the park is a great place to go with the dog. Usually the park gets all the excess snow dumped in it in the winter, but that hasn’t really been happening this year. So as long as we don’t mind a slightly muddy dog it’s a great place to take her.

Some of our neighbors must have been taking advantage of the mild winter we’ve been having because our dog has become a great source for used golf balls LOL. Yep, she’ll come up to us with two or three golf balls in her mouth. Someones been getting in a little putting practice it seems.

When you walk your dog does he or she find interesting or unusual items to bring home?

Does your dog act differently when you’re sick?

January 28, 2010 by Tricia

I don’t think my dog knows what to make of me now that I have a cold. She keeps coming up to me with her bone wanting to play, but of course I’m feeling so bad I just can’t!

She’s also fascinated by all the tissues I’m using. She watches me bring tissue up to my face and has a puzzled look on her face when I bring it away from my face again … I don’t know what she’s thinking … maybe she thinks the tissues are something I should be eating? Naturally she also tries to grab the tissues as I put them in a bag (yes I’m blowing my nose so much that I have my own personal garbage nearby).

Does your dog act different or seem confused when you’re sick with a cold or the flu?

I sure hope that I feel a bit better by tomorrow. my nose is raw and my lips are chapped from mouth breathing … like I said earlier I wouldn’t want to be getting an insurance quote looking and feeling like this!
