Our puppy is wearing me out

May 9, 2008 by Tricia

My puppy is being a bit of a pest tonight.

She gets a little hyper in the evening when Chris and I are both home. She’s always running around, chewing her toy bones and dropping them loudly on the floor. Then she’ll jump up on my husband where he’s lying on the couch, then jump off and come to visit me on the other couch … just a constant ball of motion.

I wouldn’t mind so much if she got this hyper some time during the day, but it’s really distracting when you’re trying to watch TV. We have to keep turning the volume up because the sound of her toy bones dropping on the hardwood floor or bumping into things is so loud. Oh we tell her to go and lie on her bed when she’s playing with her toy bones, but she only stays there for a while.

I think I’ll be glad when she starts to calm down a bit more. Don’t get me wrong I love her puppy attitude, but it is tiring!

Finally got a little bit of sleep

May 1, 2008 by Tricia

I can’t believe I’m still going. I think I’m like the energizer bunny. Honestly … I’ve only had about three hours sleep in the last 24 hours and haven’t averaged much more than that over the last week per day.

I did manage to sleep for two hours early this evening. That was only after I took Midnight out for a long walk. She needed the exercise and I needed to make myself tired.

There are some great walking and biking trails in our area so we headed for one of our favorites. We even strayed off the trail into an area being developed for commercial real estate. All in all I think we did a five mile walk.

I’m due for a seriously good sleep tonight, let me tell ya!

Things to do with our dog this summer?

April 27, 2008 by Tricia

Chris and I are excited about having our puppy around and the fact that we’ll more than likely be outside doing more interesting activities this year as a result.

We’ve even gone so far as to brainstorm regarding all the different places we can take our dog and what interesting things we can do with her. I’ve mentioned many times that I’ve enjoyed just getting out each day to take her for a walk, but we can do so much more.

For example we love taking her to the park and watching her run around on her long leash. We aren’t comfortable with her going leashless yet although she’s fairly responsive when we call her to come to us. We’ve also taken her to a few of our Toronto beaches already. I’m sure she’ll really enjoy that in the heat of the summer when she can take a nice dip in the cool waters of Lake Ontario to cool off.

Lately I’ve been considering getting skate shoes. She loves her walks, but if I get skate shoes I could go even farther with her without over tiring myself.

I think she’s still a little too young and not obedient enough to tag along beside our bikes if we went riding … plus they say you really shouldn’t take young dogs running for any major distances until they are about two years old as they can hurt themselves more easily.

Anyone have any great suggestions as to what else we can do with our dog this summer?

BTW we’re enjoying a feast today thanks to our neighbors and the fact that they are celebrating Greek Orthodox Easter. Take a look at the delicacies they gave us! Yummmmm!

Looking forward to fresh strawberries from the garden

strawberry plant in April

I can’t believe that as soon as the snow melts each year my strawberry plants look pretty much like the picture above. Green leaves and all. Sure there are a few dead leaves that I have to remove, but the plants are thriving and ready to start growing by the end of March each year.

The strawberries thrive in my garden … each year they send out new shoots and new plants begin to grow … often in areas that I don’t want them to grow. I just cut them off and plant them near the edge of a garden bed. I end up throwing out or giving away a lot of the new strawberry plants each year too. However, since I’m always replanting new plants, and for the most part the older plants keep returning, I end up with more and more strawberries each year.

The best thing about these strawberry plants is that they start producing berries usually by mid June and they keep going often until October so I have strawberries all season.

The only foreseeable problem this year is the dog.

A week ago I saw strawberries on sale in the grocery store and bought some so that Chris and I could have strawberries for dessert. Well, I ended up letting Midnight taste the strawberries and she loved them. Now of course she knows what this delicious treat looks like so I’m hoping she doesn’t notice them in the garden or else she’ll end up eating them before we can pick them.

I know dogs and cats can cause havoc in the garden, but do any of you have a dog or cat that singles out a fruit or veggie that they like and eat it straight from the garden bed?

Saving money on dog toys and other doggy items

April 16, 2008 by Tricia

I’ve been a pet owner of one kind or another for half my life and you’d think I’d know by now how expensive pets are to keep, wouldn’t you? I guess I forgot!

Ever since we got our puppy in November I find myself shopping for things for her. Everything from interesting yet durable toys, to an indestructible bed, treats and so on. I bet our puppy has more toys to chose from than most dogs! She’s so spoiled!

I’ve slowed down on buying things for our puppy – after all she’s got most everything she needs now – however I don’t think my habit of buying her toys and other interesting items is going to totally go away so I might as well save some money by trying to find the best buy on whatever items I decide to get for her over at buy.com.

Yeah, I’ll still be spending probably too much money on our dog, but at least it won’t be quite as much as it would have been if I hadn’t shopped around for the best price.
