Daffodils in the garden

I’m really enjoying my garden this year.

We had a very warm March – for Toronto, and that seemed to put all my plants ahead by about two weeks or more.

It’s amazing how fast everything’s grown, two weeks ago there were a few green leaves and some flowers, but now, most of the garden beds have filled in and there are literally flowers everywhere! Tulips, Hyacinth, Muscari (Grape Hyacinth), glories of the snow and of course, Daffodils!

Here are some photos of the two most prominent types of Daffodils in my garden.

Aren’t they lovely?

The Daffodils have been blooming for about two weeks and some are still coming out, so I expect I’ll have daffodils around for another two weeks or so.

What flowers are blooming in your yard?

From bare patches to green – I love Spring

It’s hard to believe how much a garden can change in just two or three weeks.

At the beginning of April my raised garden beds had plenty of bare patches … oh sure, you could see the bare roses, the Rose of Sharon tree, boxwoods and a few other plants that had withstood the winter cold and snow … but the perennials and bulbs planted deep in the soil had yet to show signs of life.

Now, near the end of April those bare patches are full of green leaves and or flowers like these lovely Glories of the snow …

Here’s another photo of White Glories of the Snow that came up in a very sunny patch of my garden .. as you can see they are just about finished blooming or well, they’re a little scraggly, maybe because the ground seems to be very dry this year despite the occasional rain:

How is your garden or yard doing this Spring … any nice changes?

Don’t you just love Spring?

April 24, 2009 by Tricia

Don’t you just love Spring? The grass is starting to turn green, trees and bushes are starting to get new leaves and even some flowers are blooming! What a great time of year!

We had some rain and cooler weather earlier in the week, but right now it’s 19 C (66 F) outside and tomorrow it’s supposed to reach 26 C (79 F) or perhaps even higher. Now that’s spring weather that I can get in to!

Last Saturday was nice too … before all the rain started on Sunday and onward. We did some gardening and yard work that day and Chris put our glass and metal patio table together.

Our neighbors kids seem to love our yard and our patio table. They ended up coming over to play with our dog, sit at the high patio chairs and even helped me with some of the garden bed tidying that I was doing. I have a feeling that every time I go out in the yard when they are home they are going to end up in our backyard. The older girl hung out with us for hours last Saturday and even wanted to come inside with us when we were done working outside. I think I’ve been “adopted”! LOL

Tomorrow, once the yard work is done we’ll probably pull out our Muskoka chairs and put them on the lawn. I’ve got to find the outdoor cushions that we use on them … they certainly make the chairs comfy!

We also have a lot (A LOT) of solar lights that we use in the front and back garden beds. We pull them out of the ground each fall so that they don’t get damaged by the cold, snow and ice and store them in our enclosed back porch. I think it’s about time we haul them out and set them up in the garden again. They look so pretty at night when they light up the garden beds and some of the plants.

What are your plans for the weekend? Are you expecting nice Spring weather too?

My back is screaming!

March 28, 2009 by Tricia

It was such a nice day here in Toronto that my husband and I decided to take the dog outside in the backyard and do some yard work.

We had actually started raking the lawn and tidying up the yard a little bit early last Monday evening, but now I can say that the backyard garden is cleaned of old dead leaves and foliage and looks great. Now we just have to clean up our very tiny front yard and our planted boulevard and the Spring cleaning will be done. At least outside …

I feel good having spent several hours working outside today, but my back HATES me right now!

I’ve had an aching back for over a year. I finally got one of my doctors to send me for an xray two weeks ago and just as I thought I’ve got a slipped disk. I’ve been doing back exercises to ease my pain and sleeping with two pillows under my legs at night … and it’s helped, but my back is still pretty bad. Gardening for over 4 hours today will not help at all.

I almost wish that we had a sleep number bed so I could play around with it and maybe find a bed hardness or softness that my back likes. Our mattress is very hard, but maybe it’s too hard. If I don’t sleep with those pillows under my legs I can barely get out of bed in the morning.

Once I came inside this evening I took some Advil and a Tylenol and put a heating pad on my back. I also took some Advil before I went out to work in the garden … but still .. my back is really hurting. I have a feeling that it will be worse tomorrow. Plus I’ll likely have some stiff muscles from all the bending, twisting and odd positions I was in as I tried to clean out my garden beds.

I’ll bet that most people don’t think that gardening is much of a workout, but try doing it for four hours – bending, stretching, lifting things … oh yeah, it’s exercise.

Do you have any aches and pains from doing Spring related activities?

Time to do some yard work

If you live in a northern climate you’re probably fairly excited that Spring has finally arrived. I know I am! We’ve actually had fairly nice weather most of the month, but I just got my first confirmation that Spring is truly here… I discovered my first crocus’ blooming in my backyard just a little while ago.

Yellow Crocus

Crocus’ are usually the first flower to bloom in my garden each year so it’s a sign that my personal gardening season has begun.

Now I can’t wait to get out in the yard and start clearing the dead leaves and dead foliage out of the garden beds! I need to rake the lawn as well. I guess we didn’t rake it much in the fall and it has a matt of dead grass that I’m sure once we rake it off we’ll see some signs of life in the lawn below.

I’ll probably have to wait a few weeks for the Hyacinths to start to make an appearance, but I can’t wait to see them and smell their heavily scented blooms. Don’t you just love the heady scent of Hyacinth?

Do you garden? If you do, what’s waking up in your garden beds right now?
