Looking for Guest bloggers

June 3, 2010 by Tricia

I don’t know why exactly but lately I’m having a lot of trouble keeping all my blogs up to date. Actually the amount of blogs I have is the problem. There’s just too many and not enough time in the day.

Coming up with new posts for 15+ blogs on a regular basis is a full time job. Hmmm I wonder if there’s some kind of project management software for multiple blog owners? LOL Yah, probably not.

S now I’m thinking about opening up my blogs to guest bloggers. People who can write about gardening, home appliances, home decor, home life, health etc. Topics that would fit well with this blog and a few of my other blogs.

Guest bloggers can add a short byline to the beginning or end of their post with a link to their main site and up to one link to one of their sites (if relevant to the topic of the article) within the post.

If you’re interested in guest blogging please feel free to leave a comment on this post or use the contact form to get in touch with me. I’d prefer people that currently have blogs that they write in regularly so that I can see samples of their writing style. Thanks!

Taking advantage of this great weather

May 20, 2010 by Tricia

Last week it was cold, rainy and dreary here in Toronto, but this week it’s like summer has already arrived. It’s 27 C (80 F) right now and with humidity it feels more like 30 C (86 F)! That’s much warmer that it usually is in May.

Oh and I can’t really complain about the cool rainy weather last week. We’ve had great weather here in Toronto all year – no snow in February or March and spring like temps since early march – so how can I complain about a few bad days here and there? Besides – my beautiful garden needed the rain.

Since I knew the weather was going to be good this week and it looks good for next week too … last night my husband and I went to a new garden center shortly after Chris came home from work. I’d visited their website and found out that on Wednesdays they don’t charge tax! That means that along with taking advantage of some spring sales on plants we also got 13% off to total price.

We bought over $100 worth of annuals and veggies. Now I just have to plant them.

I was going to go out into the garden earlier today and start working on some of my planters, but it was so hot when I went out I decided to hold off for a while. Perhaps I’ll do a few planters this evening. Hey .. it’s light out until about 9 pm so I’ll have a few hours to work and it should be cooler … or well, at least the sun won’t be shining quite so brightly on my back as I work!

Since the weathers been so nice all Spring I thought we’d have the patio set up before now … but we haven’t hauled our glass and metal patio table and chairs out of the basement and storage area yet so I think we’ll probably do that this weekend. We’ll also get out our solar lights. I like to place them in the garden beds so that we have a little bit of ambient light at night.

Sometime this weekend I want to shop for some cushions for our patio chairs. They’re nice chairs, but a small cushion to lean on might be nice. I find my back hurts a bit if I sit in our patio chairs for too long. I might also look at outdoor rugs to place on the patio under the patio table.

Do you have plans for the long weekend? It’s Victoria Day here in Canada and I believe in the Us it’s Memorial day so I’m sure a lot of people are going up to the cottage, camping or getting together with family. We don’t have any family or travel plans … just the gardening plans. Our weekends have been pretty busy over the last few weeks so it might be nice to just stick around home and get some things done that we’ve been putting off – ie like putting together the patio table and chairs etc.

Enjoying the nice weather

April 16, 2010 by Tricia

I’m so happy that winter is finally over! Not that our winter was all that bad. We had a much much warmer than normal winter with almost zero snow. Pretty rare for most of Canada!

My garden is looking spectacular already … It’s about a month ahead of itself in growth! I think that if my husband I start to feel better this weekend (we’ve have some kind of bug) maybe we’ll pull out our patio furniture so that we can enjoy some of this nice weather and get the outdoor season started.

I guess we’ll be getting invitations to outdoor BBQ’s and things like that a little earlier this year too. I know that I’d love to have our first garden/backyard get together soon – if this good weather holds up!

How’s the weather in your area? Are you ready to get out in your backyard and start barbecuing and doing other summer like activities soon too?

Time to start some seedlings for the garden

February 11, 2010 by Tricia

I know it’s still winter, but this weekend I’ll be starting to get ready for gardening season. I only have about six weeks to wait before my garden starts to come alive! Crocus’ are usually the first flowers to come up in my garden … er lawn … and I should see some by the last week of March.

This weekend I’m going to start some seedlings indoors. Some plants like Asters, Impatiens and a few other flowers that need to be started in February so they’ll be big enough to plant out in the garden in May or so. Then in March I’ll start some other plants like Tomatoes and maybe cucumbers.

This will be the first time in a few years that I’ll have started seedlings indoors. I got lazy the last few years and just bought young plants from a local nursery, but man, that gets expensive! It’s much cheaper and much more satisfying if you start your own plants from seed.

I’ve also been looking into getting a compost tumbler. We have a compost bin in the back yard and we fill it up pretty good with kitchen scraps, leaves and other things that are great to compost, but I think we could make compost faster for the garden if we had a tumbler. Compost is great for the garden beds.

Do you garden? If you do, have you ever started your own plants at home? What kind of flowers or veggies do you grow from seed?

We’re thinking of putting a pond in our small garden

November 26, 2009 by Tricia

I was just wondering if any of you have a pond in your backyard? If so – did you install it yourself?

My husband and I have a very nice backyard garden with raised garden beds made with stackable formed stones. It looks great. We even separated our garden into two areas – a patio entertaining area separated by an oval garden bed, and then the back area surrounded by the majority of all of our garden plants.

The only major garden feature that’s missing is a pond, and my husband has always wanted us to have a pond back there. So … I’m thinking about it.

The trouble is that we have a really small yard to begin with. it’s only something like 20 feet wide and 35 feet long and with three to four foot deep garden beds going around the edges of the yard there isn’t much space left over.

If we do put in a pond it will have to be a small one. I guess I’ll have a look at pond supplies and see what I can come up with. Perhaps a small premade plastic pond would work?

Any ideas? I know that making a pond isn’t all that hard, but getting one to fit into a small established garden … that might be hard!
