Battling my roses for our new fence

June 7, 2011 by Tricia

I barely have any skin left on my arms! Why? Well … I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the last few days moving my big rose branches around in my backyard as my neighbors have a new fence put in. Actually I guess as we have a new fence put in, because it’s the fence we share that’s causing me to have to do all this work!

The fence is pretty much done now. I’m not sure that I like it, but there’s not much I can do about it now. There were two guys working for the fencing company and one of them was fairly helpful and polite to us when we asked questions but the other guy was a real jerk. He definitely should never talk to customers!

If I wasn’t so upset by the whole fence going in situation (our neighbors just kind of thrust the fence thing upon us instead of asking us what we wanted and letting us be part of the decision making process) I would have enjoyed watching the nice guy work. He was fairly good looking and I guess building fences helps build muscles .. or else he used testosterone gel because he sure had a well developed body! Me on the other hand …. as I said in the beginning .. I probably didn’t look so good covered in scratches from all those rose branches! It’s going to take a week to heal.

I think I’m going to try to sleep in tomorrow if I can. I’m so tired. I’ve been working outside for three days in a row on all this fence and garden stuff … I’m exhausted.

I love this time of year

May 11, 2011 by Tricia

I love this time of year. The weather is just starting to get nice after a long cool winter and now the trees are beginning to fill in with leaves and flowers are beginning to bloom – I can’t imagine who wouldn’t love this time of year after taking a good look outside on a nice day.

My garden is just lovely. It changes almost daily. I bought one of those digital camcorders back in February just so that I could tape the silly things that my dog does and record how my garden changes throughout the year … I guess I should be out there taping daily or at least taking pictures at this time of year because every day I look out my window and new flowers are blooming or something else has grown or new leaves have opened up. It’s just constantly changing. It’s beautiful.

Do you enjoy Spring too? Do you love seeing things green up and begin to bloom as much as I do?

Looking foward to a warm Sunday

April 9, 2011 by Tricia

The weather is going to be beautiful here in Toronto tomorrow. It’s suppose to get up to 20 Celsius! That’s about 68 F for my American Friends who don’t do metric. That’s a pretty high temperature for early April in Toronto. Not that I’m complaining … I’m quite happy about the almost summer like temperatures.

The only problem with tomorrow is that we’re expecting rain. Good for the garden, the grass etc .. but not so good if say we want to get outside and enjoy the nice temperatures we’ll be experiencing. Sigh ….

Well … I guess if It’s really raining I’ll be stuck inside, but at least I can have the windows and doors open to some degree to let in some much needed fresh air. That will be nice. Maybe I’ll get some spring cleaning done. That’s also a much needed task. The whole basement needs to be cleaned out, as do all of our closets, dresser drawers, computer cabinets and well .. everything … the whole house needs a good cleaning from top to bottom really. If tomorrow ends up being an “inside” day I think the cleaning will begin … if not … I think I’ll be out in the garden tidying up the garden beds.

Are you having are “warm” Sunday too? What are you up to?

Bird of prey in my backyard

October 27, 2010 by Tricia

I live in a large city, not too far from down town, but I still get a lot of wildlife in my yard. Perhaps it’s because I have a mature garden in my backyard.

Over the years since I first landscaped my backyard and planted all of my plants I’ve gradually seen more and more birds come into my garden year after year. Everything from Cardinals to Blue Jays frequent my garden regularly, and Hummingbirds visit throughout the summer.

Earlier today I saw something that I don’t normally see in my backyard. I saw a hawk of some kind. It might even have been a Peregrine Falcon. I ran inside the house to get my Nikon binoculars so I could get a better look but by the time I got back to the backyard the bird was gone.

Whatever the bird of prey was, it was pretty big! It was sitting on top of the electric pole in the corner of my backyard – perhaps looking for mice?

Do you ever see wildlife or unusual birds in your backyard?

Busy Busy Canada Day

July 1, 2010 by Tricia

Well Canada Day is almost over.

We had a busy day! As usual we spent a lot of time in the garden. I don’t know why, but whenever there’s a holiday we tend to use it to get things done in our yard.

Today we spent quite a bit of time in the front yard. Weeding the planted front boulevard, trimming a tidying up the plants (roses) in the flower beds in our front yard and so on. Then we moved on to the backyard to dead head some of the rose and other flowers.

At least we didn’t have too much work to do in the backyard. Two weeks ago we spent 8 hours working in the backyard tidying up the flower beds. Lucky for us – it still looks pretty good.

Once we were done tidying up the garden, we opened up two garbage containers in our driveway. The containers were full of something called Alfalfa tea. It’s a home made organic compost. It smells a bit like manure on a farm!

Yuck!

We got two watering containers and repeatedly dipped them into the large garbage containers full of alfalfa tea. We spent about an hour pouring the organic compost on our garden beds and even our lawn.

I think we stunk up the whole neighborhood! To bad we didn’t have some huge hand dryers or fans to blow the smell away! Man it was awful, but it two or three days my plants are going to start growing and showing us that they appreciate their smelly treat.

Once we finished applying the alfalfa tea to our garden and yard we did a light watering. I’ve found that if we water right away after putting the stinky liquid down the smell disperses fairly quickly. I’m sure our neighbors weren’t too happy with us when we started smelling up the area … but hey – we tried to get rid of the smell as fast as we could.

Before going outside to work in the garden I did some prep work on our dinner. I peeled some corn on the cob, cut up some green pepper for the grill, and cleaned some asparagus. I also had some steak marinating in the fridge. I new that if I didn’t get the things we were going to have for dinner ready before I went outside to garden I’d be too tired to do it later.

So needless to say, once we were finally done in the garden (about 8 pm) we quickly got ready to grill our steak and green peppers. I steamed the corn and asparagus in the microwave. It was a great dinner and it hit the spot after working hard outside for hours and hours.

Once we were done dinner we noticed that people were setting off fireworks in the park down the street. So we walked down to the park to watch some of the fireworks. There were at least two big firework shows going on in the city tonight, but since we didn’t finish our work outside early enough we were happy enough to just watch our neighbors with their fireworks.

It was nice!

All in all I’d say we had a good day and we sure got a lot done.

If you’re Canadian did you do anything special for Canada Day? Oh and if you’re one of my American readers , what ere you planning for the fourth of July?
