Jacques Cartier explorer rose is a delight!

This lovely quartered rose is Jacques Cartier. It’s a Canadian Explorer rose and it’s very hardy. Perfect for the Northern garden.

Not only can it withstand a harsh Canadian winter, but it smells lovely. It has the look of the an antique rose and the scent to go along with the look. It’s absolutely lovely.

Mine grows about 10 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide depending upon how much I prune it in the spring and later in the season. It’s kind of a floppy rose, but if staked it can look quite beautiful in the garden.

Like most roses it has thorns and Jacques Cartier’s are quite prickly! When I prune this rose during the summer I always end up missing some skin from my arms, hands and sometimes even my legs!

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.

Collecting Pollen

I have a lot of bees that enjoy the flowers in my garden. I’m actually allergic to bumble bees and hornet stings so I guess I’m lucky that for the most part I’ve got more friendly bumble bees around than any of the other stinging bees.

This lovely bumble bee is collecting pollen from a Malva sylvestra flower. This flower is very easy to grow as it’s a hybrid of the native mallow that grows throughout North America.

This is a beautiful peony that I grow in my backyard garden. I took this photo a few years ago and I believe the bloom was just about to fade. It was still lovely of course.

This peony has a mild scent. I don’t cut flowers to bring indoors often, but I do sometimes gather a bouquet of peonies and other flowers in bloom in the spring or early summer. The scent is lovely indoors too.

A Scent Sational Rose

Rose ScentSation

Yes I know this post is late, but better late than never right?

This is a hybrid tea rose called Scentsation. One day during the summer I went outside with my camera while it was raining lightly and I managed to capture a number of plants and flowers covered in rain drops.

I think rain drops on flowers are absolutely beautiful, don’t you?

A hardy rose

I grow a very hardy rose, Theresa Bugnet, in a large planter at the front of my house just to one side of my porch. The rose is so hardy that, unlike many other roses, it’s able to survive our winters in a planter.

This rose produces beautiful blooms with a heavenly scent several times each season and since it’s of the rugosa family it doesn’t have many pests and it’s affected by powdery mildew very often either. In fact this rose hates pesticides and chemicals so along with it’s built in resistance to disease this makes it very easy to care for in the garden.
