On the boardwalk

I took this photo of the Boardwalk at the beach in Toronto last August. It was an overcast August day. Well, if I remember correctly it was more than overcast. It rained most of the day. Still we had relatives in town and they wanted to meet some of our other friends at the Beach Club so off we went.

We ended up sitting outside on the patio drinking beer as the rain fell upon us. We were under umbrellas but as you know when it rains out the water drips off the edges of the umbrella and I ended up sitting in one of the drippy areas! It was still a fun day.

So this is Toronto’s boardwalk. It’s wooden. I’m certain with our weather they must have to replace several of the boards each year. It must cost the city quite a bit of money but it’s such a lovely area and so well loved by city residents and tourists alike that I’m sure we’ll have the boardwalk for a long time to come.

I’m not sure how long the boardwalk is, but it’s got to be at least 3 miles long if not more.

Probably from Spring onward, once the weather gets nice, we’ll be talking our puppy down to the beach and the boardwalk every weekend. I’m sure she’ll love to swim in the water and walk along the beach.

When can I stop shoveling?

This weeks theme is Heavy

We’ve had a few snow storms here in Toronto in the last week or two and I’ve been out shoveling the heavy snow! I guess it’s good exercise but it’s awful hard work when the snow is packed and heavy. My back ached each time.

Look how high the snow is on my tiny front lawn:

It’s almost as high as our car!

We’re supposed to get more snow over the weekend and next week. I don’t know where we’ll put it! The snow was blowing so hard the other night that you could barely see the led tail lights of the few cars trying to drive on the streets!

Please visit two of my other blogs that are participating in the Photo Hunt – We’ve had a lot of snow this week here in Toronto and if you want to see some snow damage in my garden take a look at As the Garden grows, then if you want to see what my puppy finds heavy over at Tricia’s Musings.

The CN tower – Tall, Long and Narrow

This weeks theme is Narrow

Look Way UP

This is Toronto’s CN Tower … it’s sometimes mistakenly called “The needle” – as in Seattle’s “Space Needle” – by our American visitors and while it does look a bit like a long, tall narrow needle it’s real name is the CN Tower. CN stands for Canadian National.

Up until September of 2007 it was the tallest free standing structure in the world. I think it’s title has been replaced by another tower called the Burj Dubai which is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The circular part near the top of the tower holds a restaurant and observation decks. One of the observation areas has a glass floor and let me tell you it’s pretty scary to stand on and look down! The tower is exactly 1815 feet and 5 inches tall. You can get to the top by riding one of the elevators that travel up the outside of the tower, or by climbing many many flights of stairs.

It’s certainly and impressive structure that draws many tourists each year.

Our old house

This weeks theme is Old Fashioned

skylight

This weeks photo theme is old fashioned and well … my house is of an old fashioned North American style since it was build in 1927.

When we first moved into the neighborhood we met a man who lived across the street at the corner house. He remembered the houses being build and in fact had lived in his house as a child! He moved away as a young adult but bought the house when it was available later in life. So he lived most of his life in that home!

We got a lot of stories about the old neighborhood and what the area used to be prior to housing going up. Basically it was farm land. I guess back then, this was the outskirts of the city, but these days it’s almost downtown!

The photo above was taken a couple of years ago when my husband and I, with the help of some friends, were putting a skylight in the roof of our enclosed porch. That’s why there’s a big hole in the roof … we were only half done the job at that point!

Our house is triple brick and the walls are plaster and lathe – with no insulation! Luckily the house was very well build and it seems warm enough even on very cold winter days.

BTW see our narrow driveway? Our car barely fits in it and it’s a compact car! Believe it or not that’s a shared driveway. We only own half of it! Luckily our older neighbor (Sofie my stalker) doesn’t have a car and doesn’t mind us hogging the driveway all the time. Otherwise we’d have to make a deal with the neighbors to use the driveway half the time or something. No wonder I sometimes think about getting a Smart Car … it would probably fit our half of the driveway easily!

I love Toronto

This weeks theme is Important

There are quite a few things that I hold important to me. My husband, family and friends are at the top of the list, however living in a great city such as Toronto is also important. I love this city!

Enjoying the city is important to me too.

Toronto has lovely beaches, parks, hiking and biking trails, fantastic restaurants and entertainment areas (the theatre district is in the top five largest in the world), great clubs and bars if you’re into the nightlife and a world of opportunities as far as employment goes.

As far as I’m concerned Toronto is one of the best cities to live in. There’s always something going on. Throughout the year there are many different festivals ranging from comedy to photography to simply celebrating the city.
