It’s November and my garden is still puttering away

I wrote a post on my gardening blog earlier today about how my roses and other plants are still blooming even though it’s becoming quite cold here in Toronto. Can you believe that some of my Cleomes are still blooming?

This is a purple Cleome:

It’s actually growing in my garden, but it’s poked through the fence and the flower is blooming on my neighbors side of the fence.

This is one of my White Cleomes.

I like the dark moody sky behind the flower, don’t you?

How is your gardening doing right now?

Mmmm I love Dahlias

I’ve always loved Dahlias. They are beautiful flowers and they come in many different sizes and styles. Over the years I’ve grown everything from Dinner Plate Dahlias to Cactus Dahlias like the one pictured above. I think I like the cactus dahlias best.

I actually hadn’t grown Dahlias for about two years until this past summer. I’d forgotten to buy bulbs and the few that I’d left in the ground had finally died out. (They do occasionally overwinter in the ground here in Toronto, but not always). That reminds me, I’d better go outside later today and dig up my Dahlia bulbs or else I’ll have to remember to buy more next year! Might as well save some money and try to keep the bulbs in the basement, right?

Do you grow Dahlias? What kind?

Sedum in Bloom

Sedum in Bloom

Our Sedum is blooming and it’s developed lovely fall colors.

We have some in the back garden that has orangish colored blooms, but I think I like the one in the front garden the best as it has deep rose or magenta colored blooms.

Last week I mentioned on my gardening blog that the sedums are a lot shorter this year than they usually are. I think our slightly cooler than normal summer, plus all of the rain must have stunted their growth.

My Monkshood has been blooming for about two weeks now.

I have one that blooms in June (the Bi-Color), but the Azure Monkshood blooms only in the Fall. I love their beautiful bloom blooms and wish I had more of them to fill the garden at this time of year. They are so delicate and pretty.

Flowers gone to seed

Last Monday my husband and I took our dog for a walk through one of Toronto’s large city parks and I came across some lovely wild flowers and I thought you might be interested in seeing them this Green Thumb Sunday.

I have no idea what kind of flower or rather flowers seed head this is.

It’s lovely though. If you click on the picture you’ll be able to see a larger version of this picture on Flickr …

The whole seed head is composed of tiny tiny components.

Someone on my photoblog, Breath of Life Photography, stated that it looked a bit like groups of tiny spiders. It’s not, but if you take a close look it does kind of look like that.

This on the other hand is a weed that’s gone to seed ..

The seed head spikes sit above a cluster of roundish green leaves. I have these growing in my lawn but they never get close to maturity like this one has. Again, I don’t know the name of this plant / weed, but it’s interesting even if it’s extremely common and wants to take over my grass!
