Lily flowering tulips

Lily flowering tulip

I love the look of Lily flowering tulips. I only grow a few of these and I think that I’ll get some more for the garden this fall. They’re very delicate looking with their petals flared outwards.

I’m not sure why I’m so attracted to the more ornate tulips. I like regular tulips, but I’m drawn to double flowering tulips, Texas flames with their fiery colors, fringe tipped and lily flowering tulips. Perhaps since we go through a long dull winter here in Toronto I long for color and flowers with some flare when it’s time for them to finally grace my garden?

Do you have a favorite tulip or a favorite spring flower?

Still waiting for the snow to melt

Purple fringed tulips

Unfortunately my garden is still covered in snow. It’s been melting slowly, but at this rate it’s going to take at least a month before it’s totally gone. Sigh …

When the snow does finally disappear, beauties like these fringed tulips will make an appearance. I think these are my favorite tulips. Well, I’m also partial to Angelique tulips as well with their soft pink double petaled flowers.

How is your garden doing? Are you in a warmer area or are you still buried under snow like me?

Hoping my azaleas do well this year

Azalea buds

Just four more days and Spring will be here! I think I’ve pretty much said that in all three of my GTS posts today. Can you tell I’m excited?

I’ll have to wait until sometime in May before my two small Northern Lights Azalea shrubs begin to bloom, but that too is well worth the wait. I only wish that they weren’t so stingy with their flowers.

Perhaps this year, thanks to an abundance of snow cover to protect the plants and hopefully give them a good dose of moisture when it begins to melt, my azalea’s will do better than ever. I sure hope so!

Do you grow Azaleas?

Remember it’s Easter this weekend. If you don’t grow your own flowers, why not buy someone for someone special?

Lovely Nova Zembla Rhododendron

Rhododendrons are one of the plants that I think of when I think of spring. The photo above is a picture of my one and only Rhododendron Nova Zembla. I took this photo last May when the buds were just about to bloom.

The flowers of Nova Zembla are a beautiful shade of red that contains a hint of purple. There’s a pattern on the delicate small flowers as well. This plant is just lovely when it’s branches are bursting with blooms.

I wish it’s blooming season was longer, but I’d say that I get close to a month of blooms out of my Rhododendron each season unless it becomes too hot too fast!

I’m fairly certain that my Rhodo will do well this year as it’s had a nice protective cover of snow over most of the winter.

I also have two Azalea trees. They’re still on the small side and don’t bloom anywhere near as profusely as the Rhododendron, but they too are quite lovely.

Do you grow Rhododendrons or Azaleas?

Now I’m off to Orovo to get some supplies. I need to build my muscles if I’m going to have to keep shoveling all this never ending snow!

Pretty yellow Stella D’ora Daylily

I grow a few clumps of Stella D’ora daylilies throughout my garden and they are wonderfully simple flowers to care for because they do well in both moderate to full sun, don’t need a whole lot of care and they manage to rebloom several times throughout the growing season.

I tend to grow my Stella D’ora’s near plants such as Hostas and heucheras. They also look quite nice beside lavender or purple Salvia.

I think in all I grow about five different types of daylilies, but even though Stella is quite common, I still think it’s one of the easiest and nicest day lilies that I grow.
