Thinking about getting a home security system

October 5, 2010 by Tricia

The other day our next door neighbors, the ones in the house that’s attached to ours, knocked on our door to tell us that they were thinking about putting in a home security system.

Earlier this year they had talked to us about our shared fence. Sometime in the very near future we’ll be replacing our fence and we hope to work out a deal by getting the work done on our yards at the same time.

I guess our neighbours figured that since we were interested in saving money on our shared fence that we might also be interested in seeing if we could get a discount with the security company by having them come in and put security systems in both of our houses at the same time. They’d already asked the security company and they’d give us a 15% discount if we got a security system at the same time. So … we’re thinking about it.

Our neighbors want a home security system for several reasons – 1. they live in a corner house so they have more security concerns, 2. they have a young child so they’re worried about child safety and 3. most security systems also have quick call buttons for fire, ambulance and police so that’s another safety feature that they’re interested in.

We’re going to think about putting in a security system. Money is pretty tight right now so we might hold off on the offer, but we’d love to get one. I know our home insurance company would also give us a discount on our home insurance if we had a home security system too. Another thing to think about I suppose.

Our neighbors and their BIG bed

September 16, 2010 by Tricia

Earlier tonight, as my husband and I were having dinner our dog started howling at the door.

We got up to investigate the noise that had startled her. It turned out that our next door neighbours were in the midst of struggling to get a brand new mattress in their front door.

They weren’t having an easy time of it. For some reason they had decided to buy a king sized bed … even though their house (identical to ours) is very small and a king sized bed will probably just about take up most of the master bedroom.

Anyway .. since they were having such a hard time getting the mattress – a latex mattress BTW, inside their house, we decided to try to give them a hand.

It’s actually a good thing that we helped because we had to lift the mattress over the upstairs banister in order to get it to the top floor. It would never have made the turn at the top of the stairs without all of us lifting it up otherwise.

So I presume that they’re now putting their new bed together. I think with all that lifting and building they’ll probably be tired enough to sleep tonight. I hope their new bed is comfortable!

Busy Busy Canada Day

July 1, 2010 by Tricia

Well Canada Day is almost over.

We had a busy day! As usual we spent a lot of time in the garden. I don’t know why, but whenever there’s a holiday we tend to use it to get things done in our yard.

Today we spent quite a bit of time in the front yard. Weeding the planted front boulevard, trimming a tidying up the plants (roses) in the flower beds in our front yard and so on. Then we moved on to the backyard to dead head some of the rose and other flowers.

At least we didn’t have too much work to do in the backyard. Two weeks ago we spent 8 hours working in the backyard tidying up the flower beds. Lucky for us – it still looks pretty good.

Once we were done tidying up the garden, we opened up two garbage containers in our driveway. The containers were full of something called Alfalfa tea. It’s a home made organic compost. It smells a bit like manure on a farm!

Yuck!

We got two watering containers and repeatedly dipped them into the large garbage containers full of alfalfa tea. We spent about an hour pouring the organic compost on our garden beds and even our lawn.

I think we stunk up the whole neighborhood! To bad we didn’t have some huge hand dryers or fans to blow the smell away! Man it was awful, but it two or three days my plants are going to start growing and showing us that they appreciate their smelly treat.

Once we finished applying the alfalfa tea to our garden and yard we did a light watering. I’ve found that if we water right away after putting the stinky liquid down the smell disperses fairly quickly. I’m sure our neighbors weren’t too happy with us when we started smelling up the area … but hey – we tried to get rid of the smell as fast as we could.

Before going outside to work in the garden I did some prep work on our dinner. I peeled some corn on the cob, cut up some green pepper for the grill, and cleaned some asparagus. I also had some steak marinating in the fridge. I new that if I didn’t get the things we were going to have for dinner ready before I went outside to garden I’d be too tired to do it later.

So needless to say, once we were finally done in the garden (about 8 pm) we quickly got ready to grill our steak and green peppers. I steamed the corn and asparagus in the microwave. It was a great dinner and it hit the spot after working hard outside for hours and hours.

Once we were done dinner we noticed that people were setting off fireworks in the park down the street. So we walked down to the park to watch some of the fireworks. There were at least two big firework shows going on in the city tonight, but since we didn’t finish our work outside early enough we were happy enough to just watch our neighbors with their fireworks.

It was nice!

All in all I’d say we had a good day and we sure got a lot done.

If you’re Canadian did you do anything special for Canada Day? Oh and if you’re one of my American readers , what ere you planning for the fourth of July?

We finally have new neighbors

June 5, 2010 by Tricia

Well it looks like we finally have peranent new neighbors. Good bye to renters next door – hello new home owners!

The new people arrived at the house next door earlier today to start cleaning up and I suppose to prepare for their move.

I only met the man as the wife was out when we went over to say hello and give them some desserts from a local bakery as a welcome. He seemed nice and my husband had met his wife earlier in the day and said she was nice too … so, so far so good! Fingers crossed anyway!

The man was dressed in a head to toe white suit when I met him … one of those suits you can buy at Home Depot or a similar store for painting or to protect your clothes when you’re doing big jobs. He looked hot and sweaty. Maybe they could market those work suits as a new kind of fat burner because I’m sure that’s what it does!

We didn’t get around to asking the new neighbors when they might be moving in, but we got the feeling it will be soon. That’s good – I hate having an empty house next to us.

I’d love to have a vacation property

March 16, 2010 by Tricia

I was talking to one of my neighbors the other day and he was telling me that he’s looking into buying a vacation property.

That’s something that my husband and I have always wanted! A cottage by the lake or a beach house somewhere. Oh wouldn’t that be nice?

It seems the dream might come true for our neighbor. He’s leaving sometime this week to take a look at Outer banks foreclosures and he hopes to get a deal on a property. I’ve heard the Outer Banks are lovely so I imagine that he’ll fall in love with one of the sites that he sees.

Do any of you have a second property that you use for vacations or weekends?
