The last of the sunflowers

September 5, 2007 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

IMG_0629 copy

I won’t have sunflowers for much longer and it’s not due to our weather getting cooler. It’s because of a city bylaw notice.

Yesterday we got a notice from the city that we have one week to trim our sunflowers down to three feet as they are over grown and I suppose obstructing our driveway view. Well darn … we don’t use our driveway much – we only drive our car about once a week. Grrrr.

You can’t trim sunflowers, they die when you cut them in half … plus some of our sunflowers only have flowers at the top.

I guess I’ll be saying good bye to our flowers and the yellow finches that love to sit in them and eat the seeds.

The worst border we ever had

July 13, 2007 by Tricia

Last year about this time we lost faith in our Korean border. She’d been living with us for a few weeks when she decided to take the weekend trip to New York that the English as a Second language school she was attending offered.

Trouble was – she went to New York as planned, but didn’t come home on the Monday when we expected her to return. We were upset. We were scared for her!

Did she ever make it to the meeting area in Toronto? Did she get on the bus? Did something happen in New York? We called the school and the agency that had matched us up and no one new where she was. The guy at the agency said “she’s a young girl, she’s probably just out having fun”. Yeah, but the contract we signed with the agency made us responsible for her so if something happened …

We finally found out – when she called us on the Tuesday evening while still in New York, that she’d contacted a new york ticket broker on her own and got there by her own means and met friends who were visiting the US.

We were mad. She’d worried us and lied to us. She had told us all the week before that she was taking the trip with the school. Even that Friday morning as she left she told me she was meeting the other students for the bus to New York at a particular time.

After that it was all lies. She broke things and didn’t tell us, lied to us daily and even tried to steal food when she thought we weren’t looking. It’s not like we weren’t feeding her well already …

She pretty much finished us with our foreign border experiment. I know most people have good experiences but she was a head case. She even told one of our neighbors that she was was very rich and had body guards here in Canada … uh, no. No you didn’t.

I still get shivers just thinking of what she put us through.

Neighbors could make selling home difficult

July 6, 2007 by Tricia

I was just writing about how the cost of real estate in my general area has gone up and up since we moved into our home 6 years ago. I figure that the cost of our home – if we were to try to sell it – would be more than double what we paid for it!

Sounds great, but when you realize that you’d also be paying double for whatever new home you moved to it doesn’t make all that much sense to sell if you are happy with your home.

Still, I might call our real estate broker and see if she’ll appraise our home. It’d be cool to find out what it’s worth right now.

Of course if we did sell our home the new owners would have to put up with the karaoke neighbors! OMG what a terrible thought … can you imagine if we were trying to sell our home and the neighbors started up with their Gawd awful singing and loud music! We’d never be able to sell the house!

Note to self – remember to ask the neighbors to be on their best behavior if you sell the house before they do! Well, if they are still into karaoke at that time.

Stalker neighbor, power outages and battery clocks!

June 24, 2007 by Tricia

I think I’ve mentioned my neighbor Sofie before on this site. She’s my elderly neighbor that I call my stalker because she’s constantly knocking on my door or following me around the garden or worst of all staring at me from her window as I work on my desktop computer.

Thankfully I have a laptop now so I can hide from her sometimes!

Well … lately we seems to have a lot of small power outages. I’ve actually noticed that this has been happening at about 6 a.m most days. Most of the time the outage is so fast it doesn’t knock out our clocks or anything else, but early this morning I guess it was a fraction of a second long enough to mess with our electric clocks.

When our clocks go out so do the neighbors! Arghhh … Sofie hasn’t banged on our door yet to reset her clocks but she will. I know she will.

One of our electric digital clocks has batteries in it and even if a power outage is a few hours long it will say the correct time when the power comes on. We’ve spoken to our neighbors family about getting her some of these clocks. They aren’t expensive so I have no idea why they haven’t yet.

I’m at the point now where if they don’t buy her a clock today or tomorrow I’m going to go out and buy her two and give them the bill. Gas and time expenses included!

Why do some families not take care of their elderly relatives properly? I’m certain it’s their lack of care causing her to fixate on us .. me .. so much.

Fire, electricity and stupid people

June 24, 2007 by Tricia

We had quite the scare yesterday. I plan on writing out the full details on my main blog Tricia’s Musings sometime later today but I’ll just tell you it involved fire and electricity, neighbors stupid people!

Remember how I was mentioning we had a really bad storm here in Toronto early last week and that trees fell down and crushed houses in our general neighborhood but luckily not on our block? Well it appears that the tree next door to us might have had a bit of damage.

Just to summarize a branch fell on the power line that was under the tree. The power box is right there too beside the power line and the branch got zapped by the electric wire. Neighbors all round were outside staring at the flames but were too stupid to call 911!

I called 911 and got the fire department and police to come and check out the problem. Meanwhile the electric box attached to the wire exploded!

The neighbor who owns the tree is our Karaoke neighbors and they were terrified and stayed in their house. Right … there’s a fire in the tree that’s hanging over my house and I’m going to stay inside? No way!

Anyway, I’ll give a full account on my other site at some point later in the day. It was a bit of excitement that got the adrenaline pumping!
