Liked the first turkey so much I’m cooking another

January 3, 2011 by Tricia

My house is filled with the smell of a roasting turkey. Yep … I’m cooking the first turkey of the new year.

Yeah … I’m cooking again! I cooked a turkey just before Christmas – on December 23rd – I called it my Festivus Turkey and now I guess this is my “after” New Year turkey.

The truth is … we actually enjoy eating turkey (I brined this one so it should be extremely moist) and I bought the turkey at a good price (15 pounder for about 12 bucks) and since my husband was on temporary lay off from work for the last two weeks of December we’re on a tight budget. Eating two turkeys for three or four weeks is fine with us if it saves us money … and hey … turkey is good for you, isn’t it?

Now if that darn new internal thermometer alarm would stop going off early I could get some work done. I’m trying to install an update for my scanner software but the thermometer that I put in the turkey leg keeps going off … even though the turkey hasn’t been in the oven long enough (well it probably has now, but when it was only in the oven for 30 minutes I new that was too soon!).

Do you ever eat turkey when it’s not a holiday meal? I mean like us – in January?

Did you make any New Year resolutions?

January 3, 2011 by Tricia

Happy New Year!

So … did any of you brave souls make any new year resolutions? Have you managed to keep them up to day three of the new year or have you broken them already?

I didn’t really make any resolutions. If I did at all it would have been to go to be earlier. I’m a chronic night owl and I’m sure I’d feel a little better overall if I’d just go to bed an hour or two earlier each night. IF that was my resolution it’s broken already … I went to bed very late on the first night of the year, but I’ve been doing better the last two nights, maybe it will work.

I did managed to quit smoking in October (October 12th!) and yes, I’m still not smoking. Going on three months … so that’s going well. That’s a big resolution that people tend to make at the start of the new year, I guess I made mine early when the pressure wouldn’t be on me.

One of my friends vowed to lose weight. 15 pounds before spring! I think she’s looking for a weight loss supplement but I know that just watching what you eat and stepping up your activity really does help.

So … let me know if you made any new year resolutions and if you’ve managed to stick to them so far.

Ready for Christmas

December 24, 2010 by Tricia

Well I think we’re all set for Christmas. We’d better be! It’s almost 8 pm on Christmas eve and the stores are closed! If I’m no ready it’s too late!

I was just talking with a friend on the phone, wishing her a merry Christmas as I won’t be seeing her over the holidays and we were talking about our plans for Christmas day and so on.

She told me about the gift she got her nieces – it’s birthstone jewelry for kids! She bought a birthstone ring for one of her nieces and a charm bracelet for the other one. I thought that was a great idea. As I said we’re ready for Christmas and we bought gifts for the kids already, but if I’d thought of something like this before getting gifts I might have bought something like this for one of my nieces myself.

So … are you ready for Christmas and everything else that goes along with the holidays? Are you cooking a big meal or traveling to someone’s house to enjoy dinner? Tell me all about it.

Our absent neighbors

December 18, 2010 by Tricia

I was just thinking that we haven’t seen our new neighbors in a couple of weeks. Can you believe they haven’t even moved in yet? They bought the house next door in April or maybe early May and here in is near the end of December – 8 months later and we barely ever see them.

Still … it’s a big change from our old renter neighbors! I’m so glad they don’t live next to use any more. If they still lived next to us not only would we still be hiding behind locked screened doors (not just locked doors) but we’d have a few security cameras up around the house too. Those people were scary nasty!

I guess what I’m saying is that the new neighbors that actually own the house next door are a huge improvement over the criminal renter neighbors – even if we never see them. It’s not that bad that we don’t see them really … apparently they’re off at parties every weekend. My only fear is that once they actually move in they might start having parties in their house every weekend.

The Migraines are back ..

December 17, 2010 by Tricia

I went to see my neurologist on Wednesday. I was fit in as sort of an emergency appointment because of some strange symptoms I’ve been having.

If you’ve been reading my blog you probably know that I’ve been suffering from some pretty wicked migraines and other migraine side effects/ symptoms over the last year to two years. Things like Migraine pain, dizziness, visual auras, buzzing in the ears, brain fog (trouble thinking … ) and so on … So back in March when I was seeing my neurologist for another problem I mentioned how bad my migraines were becoming and he decided to send me in for an MRI. Naturally I had to wait a while for the MRI and I didn’t end up having it until early July.

The MRI turned out fine and on my follow up appointment with the neurologist in August he decided to start me an anticonvulsant medication called Topamax.

Amazingly the medication started working right from day one. No other medication that I’ve ever taken for migraine has ever worked so fast. In fact, for the first month I was pretty much migraine and headache free. Unfortunately, but October, I decided to quit smoking and I started taking another medication to help me quit (Zyban) and I started getting headachey again. I don’t know if it was the Zyban or maybe changes in my body due to quitting smoking but either way the headaches that I started experiencing in October got worse and became more migraine like by November.

I also noticed around the beginning of October – prior to quitting smoking – that I had a heightened sense of smell. My dog suddenly smelled awful. She smelled skunky or musky and other things smelled so much stronger and worse than they used to smell. My husbands nephew came to visit and he had scented deodorant in his bag and I couldn’t stand the smell … oh and when he pulled out his laptop computer it stunk of the scented deodorant!

That’s the reason why I went to see the neurologist. The scent problem. The migraines were getting worse again and that was bad enough, but everything in my world smells and frankly my world smells bad.

We figured out that it’s the anticonvulsant that’s making me have a heightened sense of smell. the anticonvulsant works on the brains temporal lobes and that’s also were the olfactory area of the brain is … so the medication probably turned on the scent area of my brain. My smell problem probably won’t go away unless I stop the medication … but I don’t really want to stop it since it’s the only medication that’s ever helped me with my awful migraines … so we decided to double the dose I’m taking! Yeah … I know … I might be in smell hell soon!

So … I’ll try taking the double dose of Topamax for now and see how it goes. If the smell issue drives me nuts I have a prescription for another medication that I can try. Of course … doubling my current medication probably means I’m going to have skin or acne issues too! I’ve been looking into something called nanocleanse to use as a preventative if my skin starts to act up.

I’m just hoping that boosting my medication works. I was feeling pretty good in September and I’d like to feel better again soon. I just need to get through the next week or two .. the medication makes me feel pretty weird as I add more to my regular dosage. It’s a strange drug.
