Aw so sweet!

Wordless Wednesday

baby-gets-lick-of-approval

If I had a newborn baby at home I’m not sure I’d love the dog licking the babies face, but this sure is cute! I love photos of dogs and kids, don’t you?

When I first moved to Toronto I lived with my sister. She had two dogs at home – a German Sheppard and the Sheppard’s daughter – a mix that was probably half Doberman. The dogs were great and very protective.

Shortly after I moved into a place of my own my sister got pregnant and had twins. The dogs were wonderful with the babies and I’m pretty sure that I’ve got some photos of the dogs with the babies that are similar to the one above.

Collateral damage?

Midnight our Lab puppy

I just love my little puppy, Midnight. She’s only been with us for about three weeks now, but she’s definitely grown on us!

That’s probably because we have to constantly watch the mischievously little girl. If she disappears from our sight for a minute or two she’s bound to be found trying to jump up at something she shouldn’t be trying to get or trying to get into something like the garbage.

Yesterday morning I was upstairs and my husband was in the basement getting ready to have a shower. Midnight was safely tucked away in her training crate. We always put a few chew toys in with her and it sounded like she was going nuts playing with her toys, but as it turned out she was up to no good.

You see, on top of her training crate is the box the crate came in. My husband put it there just after he put the cage together and we’ve been using that area as a place to put our winter coats since we go in and out with the puppy several times each day. Remember we don’t have any closets on the main floor. We usually keep our coats on coat hangers in the basement hallway, but leaving them on top of the crate has been working out just fine … until Thursday morning that is.

The hood of my winter coat, with it’s faux fur trim, fell victim to our playful puppy. I guess when Chris took the puppy out in the morning he must have moved my coat a bit when he got his own and the hood must have been hanging over the edge just enough for our puppy to reach it with her inquisitive little mouth. She probably latched onto it and pulled it down enough to really start chewing on it!

In the end … my hood was still intact but some of the buttons that had held it onto the coat were gone ( we found them) and oh … about a handful of faux fur littered the bottom of her cage. Hopefully she didn’t swallow too much of that stuff!

midnight14weeks

I imagine that she was probably looking up at my coats hood just like she is in this photo. Of course in this photo she’s looking up at my husband hoping he’ll give her a treat … but a coat hood to tear apart is yet another treat to a silly puppy too isn’t it?

That’s the first item of either Chris or I’s that she’s managed to damage in any way. We’ve probably been lucky so far. I’m sure by the time she’s a year old I’ll have a list as long as my arm of things she’s destroyed!

If you’d like to see more pictures of our puppy and hear more about how playful she is check out the post I wrote titled She’s not chewsy at all and a great photo of her on my photoblog.

I’m enjoying walking around the neighborhood

December 14, 2007 by Tricia

Well I’ve been taking lots and lots of walks around the neighborhood with our little puppy lately.

I’m enjoying getting out so much even thought it’s getting so much colder! Plus we had a huge snow storm on Thursday so walking on the un-shoveled sidewalks wasn’t all that much fun. Puppy enjoyed it though. She kind of gallops like a horse through the snow jumping from snow mound to snow mound. It’s really quite cute.

I can’t wait until our puppy gets her third set of shots in early January and I guess her rabies vaccines shortly after that too. She’ll be a little older and since she’ll have all her vaccinations we’ll be able walk further and maybe even go to the park. Certainly by February or early March we should be able to do that anyway.

We live in a nice enough neighborhood but there’s some very nice neighborhoods within easy walking distance and I’d love to walk Midnight around that area. She could get her exercise (me too) and I could spend time looking at all of the luxury homes and everyones gardens.

Midnight was 12 weeks old when we got her November 23rd and she’d only had one set of shots, her first, near the beginning of October. She should have had two sets of vaccinations by the time she was 12 weeks old. So she’s behind.

Because she’s behind in her vaccinations we were only going to let her use the front and back yards at first, but then it snowed. Much earlier this year than the last several and the snow is staying on the ground instead of melting away in a few days. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think with all the snow it’s a little safer to take her for walks just around the block. We aren’t going near the park, nor are we going in any areas that other dogs frequent. I suppose there’s always a chance that she can pick up something, but I’m hoping the snow is covering up all the potential bad germs.

I guess that’s the only real good thing about having a young puppy at this time of year. I know I’m going to dread going out with her several times a day when it’s -10 or -15 Celsius, but as far as her chances of catching any of the bugs that live in the soil or that would likely be in higher concentrations spring through fall she’s safer.

What do you think? Is it safe to take short walks just around the block when there’s snow covering the ground or should we stick to our own property until her vaccinations are finished?

Donate your car to Car Angel and help kids in need

December 13, 2007 by Tricia

There’s a really cool website called Car Angel where you can make a car donation or for that matter you can even donate a boat, an RV, a house, or even a plane and I believe the money from the proceeds of your donation goes towards helping single mothers, orphans, homeless, teen and adult rehab and prison reform.

The people at Car Angel also use the donations they receive to make videos for kids and teens. In total they’ve given away over 2.4 million videos!

As you might expect Car Angel is a non-profit organization, created to help those in need. You can help by making a donation. It’s easy to do. For example if you are donating a car they will do all the work to schedule the vehicles pick up or towing. They’ll also do all the work involved with transferring the title. Your donation will qualify as an IRS tax deduction as well.

This is one of the videos that they’ve purchased for kids that is distributed free thanks to all of the donations Car Angel has received:

Trying to decide on a gift for Chris

December 10, 2007 by Tricia

I’m trying to think of what to get Chris for Christmas.

The way we’ve been spending money what with our trip to Vegas, buying a puppy – the training crate for her, 3 sets of vet bills in two weeks since she’s sick, toys and so on, plus the car windows motor broke the other day so that was another expensive bill … oh and the DLP TV needed an expensive new light bulb last week … I’m just not sure whether we should even exchange gifts at all. BTW the expenses I just mentioned above are several thousand dollars worth all in just a months time!

I mean, we’ve got to get gifts for family members, but we don’t really need anything and the puppy is like a Christmas gift for both of us.

If I were going to get Chris a gift I thought about maybe getting him a new watch. His current watch is nice enough and still works but it would be nice to get him a dressy watch. I can’t afford any of the beautiful IWC watches, but if I could find another brand that was similar I think it would be a gift that he would appreciate.

What do you think? Is the puppy enough of a gift for the two of us? I think she is. We have pretty much everything else we need and want.
