New watches for all

January 26, 2008 by Tricia

Chris and I got new watches last week. His watch had died a few days before – or at least we thought it had since it didn’t work after he’d replaced the battery, and my main watch was on it’s 3rd watch band and frankly I was getting sick of replacing the band. So we went out watch shopping.

We ended up looking for new watches in a department store. It has a good selection with watches made by Timex, Bell and Ross, Swatch, Roots, Cardinal, and a lot of designer names too.

I ended up getting a womans Ironman Timex watch. It has a build in rubber or rubberish? watch band that feels really comfortable. Chris got a Cardinal stainless steel Chrono watch.

Funny thing is that just a day or two ago when our puppy saw Chris’ old watch on the telephone table and jumped up to try to grab it we noticed that it was working again! Ha .. isn’t that a strange co-incidence? Oh well, the way Chris loses things it’s probably good that he’s got two watches now.

Thief stole his cone!

Wordless Wednesday

See the look on the mans face? Isn’t that priceless?

I’d be mad too if a sea gull stole half my ice cream cone!

When we go to the Beaches area here in Toronto we have to watch out for the birds too. There’s all kinds of Canadian geese, ducks, pigeons and yes – sea gulls. If you have food you have to guard it because any of the above mentioned birds would be happy to steal it.

My knees don’t like this cold weather

January 23, 2008 by Tricia

Oh my aching knees!

The weather here in Toronto has been strange this month. January began with a major snow storm, then it warmed up, so much so it seemed very spring like, and then in the last week it’s been like living in the Arctic.

I must be getting older because I’m feeling all these weather changes. Especially when it’s really cold outside. Ok it’s not really aging. I have Crohns disease and it can affect your joints too. I’m sure that’s what it is.

If I’ve been sitting for a while and then have to get up to go upstairs to use the washroom my knees protest. Walking up the stairs really hurts. Of course by the time I’ve been moving around for a little bit knees usually start to feel a bit better, but those first few minutes are bad.

My mom had a bad back and bad knees too. As her pain got worse we started to worry about her walking up and down the stairs. Luckily my parents had set up their home so that they didn’t have to go up and down the stairs all that often, but of course the freezer was in the basement so there would be occasional trips downstairs to get things out of the freezer.

When my father passed away we worried about my mom even more. She got around pretty well – especially when she didn’t have to navigate stairs, but being alone in the house presented new problems. What if she fell on the stairs … there was no one there to hear her fall or to help her.

My husband came up with the idea of installing one of those stair lifts. I think my mother liked the idea, but we could never fully talk her into it.

Now with my knees starting to speak their mind more and more often I almost wish that we’d install a stair lift here. I’m always going up and down the stairs. The main bathroom is upstairs. Now that we have a puppy in the house I’m also going outside and again up and down stairs outside all the time too.

You can bet that if we ever move I’ll be sure to buy a house with a bathroom and maybe even a bedroom on the main floor.

Diverting from their main product line?

January 23, 2008 by Tricia

I always find it kind of strange when I come across a new product that’s made by a company that is well known for making a totally different type of product.

Take Nike for example. When you think of Nike you probably think of running shoes or some type of sports related shoes. You might also think about their sports or outdoor clothing lines, but would you think of Nike golf clubs? I honestly had no idea that they made golf clubs. I wonder if they make any other sports equipment?

I guess in a way the product is still related to the types of items they are well known for, I mean it’s not like they’re making Nike Coffee. Still I found it surprising.

Can you think of any other companies that make a product that doesn’t seem to fit with their brand?

Lavender Dreams

This is a cute little rose that I grow in my front yard garden bed. It’s called Lavender dreams.

It would be nice if it has a scent, but as far as I can detect the flowers don’t smell. Luckily when it blooms there’s tons of tiny flowers in large clusters so that helps make up for the lack of scent.

If you’re looking for a low maintenance low growing rose for your garden I’d recommend Lavender Dreams. I’ve never given it much care at all and it doesn’t seem to get powdery mildew or any other types of problems that plaque many of the commonly popular roses.

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.
