I’m glad the holidays are over!

January 2, 2009 by Tricia

So … How did the Holidays treat you? Did you have a nice time with friends and relatives? A big turkey dinner at Christmas? Get at least one present you really wanted? Party too much at New Years?

Chris and I had a nice Christmas and New Years. We went to his parents on Christmas day for a meal. No, it wasn’t a turkey dinner. Darn! My Mother in Law isn’t the best cook. She made mashed turnip, carrots, mashed potatoes, stuffing and uhm cooked up those pressed chicken breasts that you get from M & M’s.

The meal was OK, but for me it didn’t seem like a true Christmas dinner. So this weekend Chris and I are going to either get a small turkey or some turkey breasts and I’ll make us up a tasty New Years dinner either tomorrow or Sunday. Hey, it’s not the holidays to me if you don’t have some leftover turkey kicking around.

Chris’ older brother was visiting from Chicago and he brought his youngest son, 14 years old, with him. So on Christmas evening we drove from Chris’ parents home in Brantford back to our house in Toronto and all the guys ended up going to the park down the street from us to play hockey on the hockey rink. They actually did that twice a day for four days. So the guys got their exercise!

Unfortunately when they were in the house they watched hockey game after hockey game – old classics and the World Junior Hockey tournament pre-games so needless to say I’m hockeyed out. Chris’ cousin brought his two sons over for one of the days as well, so I think I’m “guyed” out as well. There was way too much testosterone around here last weekend!

Chris’ brother left on Monday and I’ve been recovering from the holidays and enjoying the peace and quite ever since.

Unfortunately for my nephew, I happened to go into the basement one day during the week and I discovered that he’d left a piece of his Samsonite luggage and a pair of jeans behind! I guess things like that happen to 14 year olds! Now I need to find out if we should ship the luggage and jeans to Chicago or just keep them until they come back for another visit.

It was really cold here at New Years so instead of going downtown to see the live show that they put on here in Toronto we stayed in and cuddled on the couch watching TV. We ended up watching the Niagara Falls New Years show and saw Roger Hodgson of Supertramp and Kim Mitchell perform. It was a great show!

Overall I’d say the holidays were great, but I’m tired out. I’ve been so sleepy this week. Maybe I’m fighting something or maybe it’s the Vitamin D supplements that I started taking (just found out I’m vitamin D deficient) that are making me tired. Either way I could sleep all day and night. Not good when you work from home!

I hope that the holidays were good to you and that you’re ready to get a good start in 2009! Happy New year and thank you for being loyal readers! I appreciate your visits and comments.

Are stores getting bigger or am I imagining things?

November 11, 2008 by Tricia

Chris had the day off today since it was Remembrance Day, so after going to a memorial down the street from us, we took advantage of his extra day off work and went out to do some shopping. Actually I made an appointment to get my haircut in the afternoon so I guess shopping was just an add on.

The mall where I get my haircut just had a new drug store put in. Well the drug store that was there moved to a different area of the mall and expanded in size.

The new store is huge! Why do drug stores need to be so big these days anyway? I mean, one area there was a wall with one diet supplement after another, two rows of just hair products and of course every drug store seems to have a grocery section these days!

Speaking of huge stores we also went to Costco (That’s like Sam’s Club in the US). I both love and hate going there. They have some great prices, but everything is in such large packages that if we buy something it lasts 6 to 12 months! That’s a good thing – unless we have too many supplies built up. We do have a small house with absolutely no closet space or rather almost no closets (we have two!). The joy of living in a 1920’s house.

Do you also think that stores are just getting bigger and bigger these days?

My dog is driving me nuts today

October 30, 2008 by Tricia

My dog Midnight is driving me nuts today.

She normally has a long nap in the afternoon that’s broken up by trips outside and a treat in the late afternoon. However, today she just wouldn’t settle down. She’s been moaning and whining and sitting looking at me like I’m supposed to know what’s wrong.

She doesn’t seems sick. We’ve had a few play sessions and she was as excited and active as normal, plus she’s been eating well too.

I can’t get any work done here at home because she’s pretty much demanding my attention. When I ignore her I get the moans and groans and she goes over to the door to ring the bell signally that she wants to go out. I’m at my wits end and I’m just about ready to pack my luggage and escape for a day or two!

Honestly … I don’t know what’s up with her.

what’s worse is that Chris isn’t home this evening. He came home from work early, had dinner and then he left again to go and audition for a band. Yes, he might be the lead guitar player for a progressive rock band if they like his work. Maybe she’s just picking up on Chris’ stress as he was nervous about meeting up with the band tonight. Frankly he doesn’t have anything to worry about since he’s an excellent guitar player … but he’s a perfectionist so yeah, he’s stressing.

Hopefully Midnight settles down soon and has a nap. Maybe she’ll wake up in a better mood. I’ve never seen her so grumpy.

We were so lazy on our vacation!

September 2, 2008 by Tricia

Chris was on vacation for the last two weeks and I just realized this morning that we didn’t even do the laundry once during his StayCation. LOL

It’s ok, we’re not smelly … we have lots of clothes. I guess I’ll have to put a few loads on tomorrow though!

We don’t have a dishwasher and we even managed to go several days without doing the dishes! By the time we did them on Saturday we had enough to fill both kitchen sinks.

I guess we were being lazy. We were going out and doing summery things in the city – like the hike I described in my Horses in the City post. We also had lots of drop in guests or went to visit relatives and friends during Chris’ vacation so we were busy, but in a relaxed kind of way. I guess that’s why my posts slowed down for a while too.

What did you do for your summer vacation – if you took one?

Are all guys wimps when they’re sick?

August 14, 2008 by Tricia

Yesterday my husband woke up feeling sick. He’d complained on and off over the last week that his stomach was bothering him and or that he felt slightly nauseated, but I guess whatever he was fighting really hit him hard yesterday.

He knew he was feeling ill but he went to work anyway. Unsurprisingly he came home about two hours later and laid on the couch like a lump. He said he had really bad stomach cramps and when I touched his forehead he was burning up.

He really was sick. I kept giving him Tylenol to bring down the fever, even checking on him at 4:30 in the morning to see if he had a bad fever and gave him yet another Tylenol when I found that he did.

Now I’m not complaining about yesterday – he really was very sick … but it just seems guys turn into big babies when they are sick. As I said he’d been feeling slightly off for about a week so he was grumpy and well … sucky for all of the past week.

I’ve got Crohn’s and I pretty much feel like crap all the time … but if I give in to it I only feel worse because I’m thinking about how bad I feel … so I try to keep going and not complain. However with my husband feeling off for a week he kind of refused to do some of the things he normally does so I had to do them … and believe me I felt worse than him all of last week!

If I can cope with feeling shitty all the time, why can’t he cope with feeling sick for a few days?

I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that I don’t get whatever bug he has (he’s a lot better today but off work) because it will hit me really hard if I get it. I did feel really terrible on Tuesday though … so who knows, maybe I’ve already had his bug.
