Vintage Guitars and the Toronto Jazz Festival

June 25, 2010 by Tricia

I think tomorrow will be a busy day for my husband and I.

He found out that there’s a vintage guitar festival being held here in Toronto so he wants to go to that. It’s at the Scarborough Community Center on Kingston Road if you happen to live in the Toronto area and you’d like to attend.

I’m not sure what we’re doing in the afternoon. Probably shopping since my husband has to go out of town on Sunday since his dad is having surgery on Monday. I know that I need to get out and look for a nice birthday gift for my husband since his birthday is next weekend. However it’s hard to look for the best buy and something that would be perfect for him with him along on the shopping trip … so that might have to wait.

I do know that in the late afternoon or early evening we’re going to head out to the Toronto Jazz Festival. There’s going to be a lot of very talented musicians and singers in town over the next week and I know that my husband and I will have a blast attending some of the events. Naturally we’ll be attending the free or mostly free events.

I guess my weekend plans are mostly music related. What are your plans for this weekend?

What a snore!

June 2, 2010 by Tricia

My husband has one of the worst snores that I’ve ever heard. I think only my dad could beat it.

Lucky for me I haven’t had to endure his snore very often over the last few years because my husband was diagnosed with sleep apnea and now he wears a bipap mask. He says he sleeps better now and so do I without that awful snoring.

Unfortunately, over the last few months I’ve noticed that my husband is snoring a little more often again. I don’t think his mask is fitting as well as it used to so it makes this weird hissing Darth Vader kind of sound. He’s also been doing this weird thing with his lips – it sounds like he’s puckering up and blowing bubbles. So even though he’s sleeping ok, my sleep has gone downhill because I can’t stand the snores and other weird mask sounds.

I suggested that my husband contact the company that set him up with his bipap machine for another mask fitting. Maybe it’s changed shape? I’m sure that will help.

I’ve also been wondering if the renewed snoring might be allergy related. Both my husband and I are allergic to dust mites and my husband complains of a stuffy nose quite often lately. Maybe I should look into getting some allergy bedding? It might help.

Do you have a husband (or wife) who snores really bad? How do you survive?

I’m a bad Canadian

June 2, 2010 by Tricia

I think I’m a bad Canadian … why? Well, I’m one of the few who doesn’t like hockey.

Shame on me! I know … Not liking Hockey is almost a crime here in Canada. LOL Really. Or well, it sure seems like it when it comes to playoffs in this house.

As the Stanley Cup finals were going on my husband would say “we have to watch this game tonight there’s only two Canadian teams left in the playoffs” and then in the semi finals he’d say the same thing about Montreal being the only Canadian team left. Now there’s no Canadian teams in the finals, but Chicago is where his brother lives so we have to root for Chicago. LOL

The only thing working to my husband benefit this week is that there are very few show that we normally watch on TV. Most had their finales last week or the week before last. Of course, even if all our regular shows were on and if my husband really wanted to watch a whole game he could use one of our other two TV’s … but there not HD so he doesn’t like that option. We could also PVR the game, but to him that’s just not the same.

I guess I’ll be stuck watching game three of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight but frankly I think I’d rather be looking up the best treatment for hemorrhoids instead.

Yup … I’m a bad Canadian.

Looking forward to a long weekend and good weather

April 1, 2010 by Tricia

It looks like we’re all set to have an amazing weekend here in Toronto. Not only is the weather going to be perfect but it’s a long weekend! Whooohooo Happy Easter!

Tomorrow it’s going to be 25 C (77 F) and we’re supposed to have similar temperatures on Saturday … possibly even higher temps with humidity. It could get to over 80 F!

No this is not an April Fools joke. Seriously, the weather has been amazing here all year so far .. just like spring instead of winter.

I imagine that the few people who have motorcycles that haven’t pulled them out yet will get them out this weekend. I sure hope they have good life insurance rates LOL. Yeah, I’m not a fan of motorcycles for some reason, maybe it’s because they’re so loud or maybe it’s because I’m an Emergency room nurse?

Anyway, I’m looking forward to the nice weather, maybe having a bbq, working in the garden and then come Sunday we’ve been invited to the in-laws for an Easter Sunday dinner. So it should be a good weekend over all.

Are you looking forward to this long Easter weekend too?

Do you stick to a budget?

January 4, 2010 by Tricia

It’s bad enough that the holiday season usually incurs higher expenses for most households what with buying gifts for kids, family and friends, but when your husband is on rolling lay-offs or someone’s out of work it gets tough to keep track of expenses and stick to a budget.

I’ve been off work for five years now thanks to a nasty Crohn’s disease flare that just won’t calm down. I used to get medical leave pay and benefits, but that ran out a few years ago, so now I’m dependent upon what income I can make on the internet.

My husband on the other hand works in the same hospital where I’m employed (yes I still have a job, I just haven’t been there for years!), but due to the hospital going over budget they’ve decided that his department must go through five or six weeks of shut down. He just completed the first two weeks of temporary lay off and is on his first day back to work. The next scheduled lay off is in March and the last in July. Once he’s accumulated enough time off work he’ll get some unemployment insurance money, but it won’t come near to what he would have made had he been working his regular hours.

So … we’re on a budget! A tight one.

My husband will get a paycheck this week but I believe that it will be for zero dollars as he didn’t work the last two weeks thanks to the lay off, so the next real paycheck we can count on from him is January 20th! That’s a long wait!

So over the weekend I spent some time working on a budget for the next month. I added up what money we each have in the bank, cash on hand, and money that we expect to come in between now and the end of the month. I then totaled all of our upcoming bills, like our biweekly mortgage payments, the monthly oil bill, house and life insurance payments, cable and telephone and so on.

The hard part about creating a budget is working out expenses that can be variable, like the grocery bill. We have a lot of food in the house right now so I think we can get by just buying the basics like milk, bread and some fresh veggies and fruit over the next two weeks, but after that our weekly grocery expenses will probably go up.

As it turns out, if we stick to the budget that I created, we should have money to spare at the end of the month. A nice chunk too – more than I thought we’d have!

One great thing about adding up your weekly or monthly expenses is that you can see where you waste money as well. Just before we bought our house in 2001 I kept track of every cent we spent – you know, stopping off at the corner store on your way home, buying a coffee each morning, buying lunch during the work week etc. At that time it turned out that we wasted a lot of money by not bringing lunch to work or buying a coffee in the morning and a soft drink or juice in the afternoon – not to mention buying the occasional chocolate bar, snack or magazine at the corner store on the way home from work. We changed our ways and stop spending money on little extras that we could bring from home or make at home and it saved us literally hundreds of dollars a month.

Do you make a monthly budget and try to stick to it? Are you successful at sticking to your budget or do you blow it most of the time?
