Trying to be money smart

August 11, 2008 by Tricia

I had gotten so use to our Canadian dollar being slightly higher than the US dollar that I didn’t notice when our dollar took a nose dive. I only noticed it the other day when I transferred my paypal earnings to my bank account and for the first time in a long time the Canadian funds were higher than the US funds from which I was changing over.

I guess in some ways this is good for me since I tend to get paid in US dollars, so that means I actually earn a tiny bit more than my US counterparts. However it’s probably not good news for our economy. Maybe I should start looking into investing my money with a futures broker before things get worse?

Now don’t go thinking that I believe we’re headed for really bad times. I don’t think Canada will do that badly over the next few years even if they do take a down turn. Our economy has been very good for most of the last decade, whereas the US economy took a downturn around 911 and kept on going down.

If you have any money to spare have you thought of investing it or putting it into a higher interest account?

My husband and I have accounts at ING as well as at National banks. We keep money in our regular (national bank accounts) just to pay the bills, but any extra goes into the ING accounts because they offer something like 4% interest on any amount of funds in the account, where as standard bank accounts only give you a small percentage of 1% and usually only when you maintain a balance of $1000 or more.

The other thing I like about our ING accounts is that while we do have some Registered saving accounts we also have regular savings accounts that allow us to access our money any time we want so it’s not like our money is tied up for three, six or 12 months or more just to earn that interest.

Whether the Canadian economy takes a dive or not I’m going to keep trying to save as much money as I can. I know it will help in the future!

Spending way too much money lately

May 31, 2008 by Tricia

I have been spending money left and right on the internet this past month. First I purchased the latest Adsense Secrets 4.0 back in late April. Then when I started having success with some of the tips I learned in that e-book I started checking out more programs.

Now I’m thinking of purchasing a program that will keep track of my Adsense clicks and stats so that I can optimize my pages further. My poor savings account is starving as I’m not feeding it additional funds these days. LOL I just need to make sure that the program is ok to use as far as Google TOS is concerned. I certainly don’t want to do anything that will cause me to lose my Adsense account!

Telephone surveys

April 18, 2008 by Tricia

Yesterday, just as I was about to take the dog outside to do her business the phone rang. I don’t usually answer the phone if I don’t recognize the number or caller ID, but I decided to pick it up. It was someone asking me to do a survey for our insurance company.

I didn’t mind doing the survey as we are pleased with our insurance company. However, as I answered the questions it occurred to me that it might not be a bad idea to call around or get an online auto insurance and home insurance quote from other companies just to see if we’re still getting the best rates.

I mean, the last time I really went around and got insurance quotes was 7 years ago when we were buying our house. Maybe there’s another company out there now that would offer us better rates.

It can’t hurt to check.

I’ve also been meaning to call our insurance company to see if they’ll give us another percentage off our home insurance rate now that we have a large breed dog. I’ve heard that some insurance companies consider a large dog in the home security so they’ll give a discount.

If you have a large dog have you tried to get a lower rate on your home insurance?

Saving money on dog toys and other doggy items

April 16, 2008 by Tricia

I’ve been a pet owner of one kind or another for half my life and you’d think I’d know by now how expensive pets are to keep, wouldn’t you? I guess I forgot!

Ever since we got our puppy in November I find myself shopping for things for her. Everything from interesting yet durable toys, to an indestructible bed, treats and so on. I bet our puppy has more toys to chose from than most dogs! She’s so spoiled!

I’ve slowed down on buying things for our puppy – after all she’s got most everything she needs now – however I don’t think my habit of buying her toys and other interesting items is going to totally go away so I might as well save some money by trying to find the best buy on whatever items I decide to get for her over at buy.com.

Yeah, I’ll still be spending probably too much money on our dog, but at least it won’t be quite as much as it would have been if I hadn’t shopped around for the best price.

Life insurance offers from the bank?

February 6, 2008 by Tricia

Twice in the last month our bank has sent us a letter offering us a deal on life insurance. It’s life insurance that’s tied in with our mortgage.

I don’t know why, but it seems strange to get a life insurance quote from your bank. Especially one that will end up raising our mortgage payments!

What do you think? Does this just seem like a bank gimmick? Yes, I’m sure all the banks are doing it. Have you purchased extra life insurance through your bank as part of your mortgage package?

It just seems wrong to me to buy insurance from my bank. Perhaps I’m just being traditional in thinking that we should get our insurance from companies that specialize in life insurance.
