Recovering from the holidays

December 27, 2009 by Tricia

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m in holiday recovery mode right now!

I spent most of last week cleaning the house, shopping, cooking and having two rounds of family visits! I’ve spent the weekend resting. Tomorrow I’ll begin to prepare for the last round of house guests and my nieces wedding on the 30th.

Don’t even ask me what we’re doing for New Years. So far we don’t have any plans, but after almost two weeks straight of holiday prep and festivities I think we’ll be having a quiet evening at home. LOL

With all the cleaning, cooking and standing I did last week I managed to make my back worse. I have a slipped disc and it’s caused me a lot of pain over the last year. I also have a numb left leg to go with it. Yesterday and Christmas day my back was so bad the pain was going into the tail bone, so when I finally got a chance to sit down and enjoy Christmas dinner and spend some time with guests (sister and her boyfriend on Christmas day) I was in too much pain to sit for long. Ow!

Last night my leg had strange sensations that I’d never felt before. I was standing in the kitchen heating up leftovers from Christmas dinner and my lower left thigh suddenly felt like it had a heating pad set on high on it! My leg even felt warmer to the touch in that area.

I actually got a little bit scared because it was so weird. I was just hoping that the very disturbing hot sensation would go away and that other worse symptoms (like leg weakness etc) wouldn’t start up.

I rested my back last night and used the heating pad on it and the hot sensation went away. In fact my back feels a lot better today … but oddly enough my right shoulder hurts a lot. My stomach (I have Crohn’s) is also bad today … maybe I’m just fighting something and that’s why my bad back and shoulder are acting up?

Did you survive the holiday season? I hope that you did! A belated Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Getting ready for the holiday, house guests and a family wedding! Ahhh!

December 16, 2009 by Tricia

In just 14 days my niece will be married. I’m sure she’ll be both happy and relieved once the big day comes as she’s only had a couple of months to plan this wedding.

You see she was going to get married in June, but her fiance joined the Canadian Forces and well … that caused them to need to get married sooner – so that she can join him when he’s in training in another province.

Along with preparing for the Christmas holidays, a dinner at my in-laws, house guests for Christmas and then house guests for the wedding … I still need to find the perfect wedding gift for my niece.

She’s registered at one of our large department stores, but I’m still trying to decide whether to get her something that she still needs from her wedding registry, try to find a unique gifts for her or just give her money so that she and her new husband can purchase whatever they really need or something that they wanted on their registry list that they didn’t receive.

The other reason why I’m considering giving them money as a wedding gift is because they’ll be moving across the country to another province shortly after their wed .. perhaps the less things they have to move the better, right? They they can use the money, as I said above, to get what they need when they settle into their new home.

What would you do? Especially considering the holidays, house guests and a Christmas dinner with the in-laws out of town as well as getting ready for this wedding. LOL

Need a great wedding gift idea

November 17, 2009 by Tricia

We just found out recently that my niece will be getting married at the end of the year. She had been planning to get married next June, but her fiance joined the armed forces and he’ll be shipping out in January (I think) so they pushed the wedding date up.

So now I’m trying to figure out what to get them for a wedding gift. Of course, we’ve had a lot of financial problems this year so while I want to get them something very nice I also have to try to keep the expenses down.

At least it’s a good time of year to be looking for a gift since there will be lots of Christmas sales coming up! No Black Friday sales here in Canada of course – since we already had Thanksgiving in October (and we don’t have a big sale associated with it unlike our US counterparts).

They are just starting out so I guess they need just about everything … well everything but Couture Jewelry since my niece grew up with a mom and aunt me) in the jewelery trade. LOL

Any good wedding gift ideas for a couple just starting out?

Getting ready for a whirlwind weekend

November 1, 2009 by Tricia

Oh oh, my brother in law is coming to Toronto for a visit. He’s a great guy, but his visits really tire me out and uh, well, they don’t bring out the best in my husband as he and my husband turn into teenagers again. In other words they drink and party and live to regret it the next day. LOL

Luckily his visit will only be for about three days, so that’s not too bad.

I do have to remind him to smoke his cigars outside though. I actually don’t mind the smell of cigars, but not in the house as the smell lingers for days! I think he smokes Rocky Patel cigars but I’m not sure. He also brings American cigarettes when he comes to visit and I don’t like the smell of those in the house either. They have a much stronger smell than Canadian cigarettes.

Anyway … I guess we’ll have to get the house ready for his visit next weekend. His youngest son has a hockey tournament here, so i guess they’ll be out watching hockey most of the time.

Do you ever have house guests that turn your whole house upside down when they visit?

Just had a little scare

September 10, 2009 by Tricia

I just got an email that made me both scared and relieved at the same time! My brother, the one who lives in Vancouver, does a lot of work in the US. Earlier this week he was in Seattle and he was hit by a car while crossing the street! Yeah, that’s the part of the email that scared the heck out of me!

Luckily for him (and I guess the driver) he was only knocked over and bruised up. His back and neck are a little sore too so he might end up having whiplash. Of course he was taken to the hospital right away so all of his injuries were taken care of an documented just in case he decides he wants to find a Seattle personal injury lawyer.

We aren’t the suing kind of family, but as it turns out the driver of the car that hit him was impaired and ended up being charged with a DUI. That really ticked my brother off … people who’ve been drinking just shouldn’t get behind the wheel of a car! I mean, my brother could have been killed! So yeah, he’s thinking about suing the guy. I don’t know if he will or not, but it’s on the table right now.
