Looking forward to a long weekend and good weather

April 1, 2010 by Tricia

It looks like we’re all set to have an amazing weekend here in Toronto. Not only is the weather going to be perfect but it’s a long weekend! Whooohooo Happy Easter!

Tomorrow it’s going to be 25 C (77 F) and we’re supposed to have similar temperatures on Saturday … possibly even higher temps with humidity. It could get to over 80 F!

No this is not an April Fools joke. Seriously, the weather has been amazing here all year so far .. just like spring instead of winter.

I imagine that the few people who have motorcycles that haven’t pulled them out yet will get them out this weekend. I sure hope they have good life insurance rates LOL. Yeah, I’m not a fan of motorcycles for some reason, maybe it’s because they’re so loud or maybe it’s because I’m an Emergency room nurse?

Anyway, I’m looking forward to the nice weather, maybe having a bbq, working in the garden and then come Sunday we’ve been invited to the in-laws for an Easter Sunday dinner. So it should be a good weekend over all.

Are you looking forward to this long Easter weekend too?

A quiet New Year’s eve and start to the year

January 4, 2010 by Tricia

Happy New Year!

I just realized that I didn’t write a New Years post to thank my regular readers and visitors for visiting this blog in 2009! Thank you for sticking around and leaving comments and being faithful visitors. I hope that my posts continue to entertain you in 2010.

So how did you celebrate New Years?

My husband and I had a quite evening. We’d had three rounds of guests in our house from the 20th of December through to the 31st and a family wedding, so once the last of our guests were safely on an airplane home we went into relaxation mode.

We had a nice dinner on New Years eve, followed much later by a glass of wine and a piece of Chocolate Fudge cheesecake at Midnight on New Years. During the evening we watched two movies that I’d taped earlier and then caught the tail end of Toronto’s New Years eve televised celebration just in time for the count down to midnight.

We spent Saturday and most of Sunday relaxing. I think we’re finally rested up and recovered from the holidays or at least I hope we are!

We hadn’t been planning to do anything over the weekend at all, but late yesterday afternoon we ran into one of our neighbors and they invited us in to have a drink for New Years and to see their latest renovations. They’d just finished redoing their kitchen and man, am I jealous! It’s beautiful and oh, they put in double copper sinks! I love the look of them! It seems like our neighbors are starting off the new year just right.

So … what did you do for New Years? Did you get together with friends and family or did you just have a quiet evening at home?

Do you stick to a budget?

January 4, 2010 by Tricia

It’s bad enough that the holiday season usually incurs higher expenses for most households what with buying gifts for kids, family and friends, but when your husband is on rolling lay-offs or someone’s out of work it gets tough to keep track of expenses and stick to a budget.

I’ve been off work for five years now thanks to a nasty Crohn’s disease flare that just won’t calm down. I used to get medical leave pay and benefits, but that ran out a few years ago, so now I’m dependent upon what income I can make on the internet.

My husband on the other hand works in the same hospital where I’m employed (yes I still have a job, I just haven’t been there for years!), but due to the hospital going over budget they’ve decided that his department must go through five or six weeks of shut down. He just completed the first two weeks of temporary lay off and is on his first day back to work. The next scheduled lay off is in March and the last in July. Once he’s accumulated enough time off work he’ll get some unemployment insurance money, but it won’t come near to what he would have made had he been working his regular hours.

So … we’re on a budget! A tight one.

My husband will get a paycheck this week but I believe that it will be for zero dollars as he didn’t work the last two weeks thanks to the lay off, so the next real paycheck we can count on from him is January 20th! That’s a long wait!

So over the weekend I spent some time working on a budget for the next month. I added up what money we each have in the bank, cash on hand, and money that we expect to come in between now and the end of the month. I then totaled all of our upcoming bills, like our biweekly mortgage payments, the monthly oil bill, house and life insurance payments, cable and telephone and so on.

The hard part about creating a budget is working out expenses that can be variable, like the grocery bill. We have a lot of food in the house right now so I think we can get by just buying the basics like milk, bread and some fresh veggies and fruit over the next two weeks, but after that our weekly grocery expenses will probably go up.

As it turns out, if we stick to the budget that I created, we should have money to spare at the end of the month. A nice chunk too – more than I thought we’d have!

One great thing about adding up your weekly or monthly expenses is that you can see where you waste money as well. Just before we bought our house in 2001 I kept track of every cent we spent – you know, stopping off at the corner store on your way home, buying a coffee each morning, buying lunch during the work week etc. At that time it turned out that we wasted a lot of money by not bringing lunch to work or buying a coffee in the morning and a soft drink or juice in the afternoon – not to mention buying the occasional chocolate bar, snack or magazine at the corner store on the way home from work. We changed our ways and stop spending money on little extras that we could bring from home or make at home and it saved us literally hundreds of dollars a month.

Do you make a monthly budget and try to stick to it? Are you successful at sticking to your budget or do you blow it most of the time?

Going to the airport to pick up our last house guests of the year

December 29, 2009 by Tricia

In just under an hour my husband and I will be driving to the airport to pick up my brother and sister in law. They are coming to Toronto for my nieces wedding tomorrow. They’ll be staying with us for two nights.

I feel sorry for my brother though .. he’s been flying all over the place for work the last few months. He was even in town a couple of weeks ago but he was so busy will meetings that we didn’t get to see him. He also had a cold at the time and even if he’d had time to see us he didn’t really want to make any of us sick right before this big family get together and wedding. He’d feel guilty. LOL

Poor guy, I think he was even working yesterday. I emailed him to send me his flight info and his wife emailed back saying that he’d just phoned her to send the info … so he wasn’t even home .. he was off working somewhere and saw my email on his phone. I think he was on a philadelphia job that he’d told me about earlier if I’m remembering correctly.

I think their visit of almost three days might be the longest break he’s had in a while.

Ok … gotta get ready to go pick him up!

The house is clean – again!

December 29, 2009 by Tricia

Our house is clean again! Just in time to get messed up when our house guests arrive later tonight! LOL

I just finished the final touches … my husband helped me make up the beds in our spare bedrooms. Earlier this month I got some allergy bedding so that’s on the beds as well as nice fresh sheets.

Now everything’s nice and tidy. For a few hours anyway.

It’s seems that I’ve cleaned the house from top to bottom at least four times in the last two weeks as we keep having house guests for two or three days and then a break, then another round of house guests. My brother and his wife are the final visitors of the year … Thank God!

Did you have house guests over the holiday season? Did you do a major clean up before they arrived?

At least my brother and his wife are really easy going people … the best kind of visitors.
