My sick hubby

July 19, 2007 by Tricia

My husband is home sick today from work. Last night when he got home just after six pm he told me that he’d been feeling terrible all day. He had the runs, sweats, fever and just generally felt dragged out.

He rested on the couch until about 8:30 in the evening. He ate a few crackers but then announced he was going to go to bed.

As you might already know I tend to stay up quite late – often through the night, because of my own illness, so I was aware of him getting up a few times in the night.

At 5 a.m. he got up to get a thermal blanket because he said he was cold. He was burning up with fever. I gave him more Tylenol. It must have been at least the third one since he’d arrived home from work. I also then went and called his work place and left messages stating that he wouldn’t be in for work today.

When he got up this morning he was feeling a lot better but he’s been extremely tired over the last several weeks so he decided to call our family doctor to see if he could get in for an appointment. Luckily they were able to see him.

Our doc is thinking he might have a thyroid problem. I’m not so sure. He’d been on some medication for a while and went off it about three weeks ago – coincidently the excessive tiredness began around that time. I think his tiredness is a side effect of getting off the medication he’d been on.

She had him get a lot of blood work just to be sure nothing serious was going on.

As far as his recent illness she of course thought that was a virus.

Apparently there’s quite a nasty bug going around. I was talking with my father in law last night and he said that my mother in law and her sister both had similar symptoms.

I just hope I don’t get this. I’ve already got abdominal problems and when I get a virus I get really really sick.

I’m awake

July 13, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve had an awful week. My sleep time is all turned around – going to bed really late, getting up late. It’s been terrible. Of course when I don’t sleep at a normal time the sleep I do get isn’t all that good so I’ve been overtired too.

Well last night I fell asleep on the couch at about 11:30. I woke up at 5:30 am, but I feel like I’ve had a good sleep despite the fact that it was on the couch.

I’m up!

Anyone losing their hair?

July 5, 2007 by Tricia

Ok I’m taking a poll:

How many men reading this have a receding hairline? or even a bald spot? Ladies? Is your mans hair getting a little thin?

The reason I’m asking is that lately I’ve noticed that my husbands hair is getting a little thin at the crown. He’s always had a very full head of hair so I’ve been very surprised to see this spot developing. His father has a full head of hair too, which is why I supposed that Chris would always have a full head of hair.

I guess I shouldn’t have thought that though. Thinning hair is a common enough problem for both men and women. Chris uncle is bald so I know there are some hair loss problems in the family.

Hmm if Chris’ thinning crown gets bigger or loses more hair I might have to send him to Dr. Larry Shapiro. LOL Sorry a little joke. That’s a doctor that specializes in hair transplants. I’m pretty sure Chris won’t need that. It’s not that bad and if it does get worse I think we can live with it.

A full head of hair is not guarantee

June 27, 2007 by Tricia

My husband and I have been together for 18 years now. It sounds like a long time, but it really doesn’t feel that long at all. Of course we haven’t been married that long. We’ve only been married for 13 years.

I was just thinking how when Chris and I first got together he had such a full head of hair I thought, great, this guys never going to go bald, he’s got so much hair!

It turns out that I wasn’t quite right about about my prediction. I wasn’t wrong, but I wasn’t right either. You see, his hair line is receding slightly. Just a little bit around the temples. Unfortunately that’s not all. In the past couple of years I’ve noticed that his hair has been getting thinner at the crown.

I blame it on his love of baseball caps. he used to always wear them and he’d tighten the band so much that it would always leave a big mark in his forehead when he’d take the hat off.

It’s not like I think he’ll end up bald or that he’ll need a Hair Transplant or anything, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he does end up with a small bald patch at the top of his head.

I guess there’s no guarantee.

ER madness

June 27, 2007 by Tricia

Speaking of my nursing career … I work in the Emergency department of a community hospital. I’m awfully lucky since the hospital is only three blocks from my home. I can actually walk to work! How great is that?

Now, I’ve been off work for a while due to my illness but I think about my job a lot and I still keep in touch with the nurses in my department. They tell me about some of the strange cases they’ve seen come in or how crazy it got in the department during the last full moon. (yes its true – there is a full moon effect, ask any emergency service worker!)

One of the saddest cases that I remember is someone who was brought in by the police. It was a girl who’d been dieting using Ephedra but she was over-dieting .. basically not eating. She was just skin and bones. On top of that she also liked to dabble in drugs … well the combination of starving herself, using diet stimulants and the drugs that she’d taken caused a severe reaction.

She was in bad shape! I was actually surprised that the police didn’t call the EMS to bring her in when they found her. Anyway, I spent most of that night taking care of her and worrying over her. She pulled through but it’s just mind boggling what people do to themselves.

I don’t have an end story for her. Unfortunately that’s the way it is in the ER. We do what we can to help people and often they are still very ill when they leave the department to go to surgery or to a floor for further care. Unless we specifically follow up on the person – and who has time in the ER, especially if the patient is no longer your patient, you just never know if they got better or what happened.

Anyone else an ER nurse?
