Recovering from a very busy weekend!

September 5, 2007 by Tricia

Well we had our family reunion this past weekend. After five days of getting together with my family I’m totally exhausted. It seems like we were always on the go.

The major highlights of the weekend were attending a baseball game – our team the Blue Jays won of course, seeing some of the cast of Heroes at the game, going on a boat cruise and gazing at the lovely city skyline at sunset from the boats deck, a big family barbecue, going to the beach on the hottest day of the weekend, dining in restaurants twice with family members and going to see my nephews photos at an art gallery.

Busy, busy, busy!

To top it all off on Sunday and Monday I really wasn’t feeling well at all. You know I have Crohns … well I thought I might need to buy some incontinence products! Yeah that’s how bad I was feeling and my stomach was just gurgling. It was awful, but I made it through.

Still, even thought I didn’t feel all that well over the weekend I enjoyed myself. I don’t get to see one of my brothers or his family very often since they live on the other side of our large country so I always try to make the best of his visits.

Did you have a nice holiday weekend? Oh … perhaps you didn’t have a long weekend. It was Labor day here on Monday and that’s a statutory holiday so all of North America had a long weekend.

I’m trying to keep busy today

August 28, 2007 by Tricia

I hope this day ends soon.

Four years ago today I watched my mother die, writhing in pain and hopefully unaware of what was happening to her, after a short fight with cancer.

I always try to keep myself busy on this date. I miss my mother terribly. I miss my father terribly as well. He died less than a year and half before my mother did.

My fathers passing and the anniversary of his death fill me with sorrow, but it never seems to hurt as much as memories of my mothers passing do. I suppose that’s because we believe my father died fairly peacefully in his sleep. My mother heard an odd sound, a gasp I suppose, and he was gone. He died in his own bed.

My mother on the other hand was diagnosed with bowel and adrenal gland cancer and shortly after that several brain tumors were found. She was in the hospital from the time of her operation/ diagnosis until her death. She had an aggressive cancer and I’m thankful her fight was fairly short at only about two months, but it took it’s toll on all of us.

She was so strong. When she knew she had cancer and that she wouldn’t be with us long she tried to sit with us and plan out who would get different items that she’d always loved. She tried to remain pleasant and cheerful even when she was in pain and never seemed too upset that life had dealt her a terrible way to end.

I can only hope that if I’m ever told that I only have a certain amount of time to live that I can be as accepting, brave and strong as she was. I guess she showed me how one can die with dignity and peace.

On the day she died, four years ago today, my husband and I got a call at the house. We rushed to the hospital to be with her in her final hour. She was unconscious I believe, but she was moaning and writhing in pain. It was almost unbearable to watch and it’s very hard to remember. I’d much rather that she’d gone peacefully like my father.

My husband and I were the only ones at her bedside. As she moaned in pain I tried calling my only brother who lived in the same city and he didn’t believe that my mother was dying. He thought that it was a false alarm.

I’m an ER nurse and I’ve been with far too many people as they’ve died. I couldn’t believe that my brother didn’t believe me when I told him what was happening. I suppose it was his own form of denial. He didn’t show up at the hospital until almost an hour after my mother had died, leaving my husband I sitting with her body as we waited for him.

I guess when I think of her death I’m dealing with the horror of how she died as well as my resentment towards my brother for not being there for her or for me during that hard time.

I hope this day ends soon … I really hope it ends soon …

BTW to top this day off my brother, the one that didn’t show up when I needed him, lives in the city where my parents are buried. He often goes to their grave site on the anniversary of their deaths, at Christmas and Easter and then he … sends photos of their gravestones. Like I need that on this day. I will not open an email from him if he sends one … I will not open an email from him …

Strange names for supplements

August 24, 2007 by Tricia

Speaking of diet products, nutritional products and even protein drinks …

After my last post I went looking to see just how many different products I could find and the most unusually name for a supplement that I found was “muscle milk”. Isn’t that a strange name for a product? I guess it makes sense though as it’s a protein drink.

I don’t think I’ve taken any supplements with strange names. Ok, well I did try Cat’s Claw in the past. I guess that’s an odd name, especially when you know that it’s a natural product that helps digestive disorders. Hmmm claws huh?

What’s the strangest named supplement or medicine that you’ve tried?

Everyone’s on a diet but me

August 24, 2007 by Tricia

Just about everyone I know seems to be on a diet these days. Actually I think most of these people have tried a number of different diets over the last few years. It’s amazing how many different types of diets and diet philosophies there are out there isn’t it?

Just as amazing is the amount of diet and weight loss related products. There’s ones like Miracle burn that I presume is supposed to help you burn calories or fat faster, and then there are protein supplements and so on.

Having Crohn’s I don’t diet. My weight fluctuates a fair amount. I’ve generally been more on the thin side than the heavy side as I suppose I have a good metabolism and well the Crohn’s symptoms have a tendency to keep the weight off too.

Actually, since I’ve been stuck at home for close to two years and not very active at all I’ve actually managed to gain some weight, a little more than I like due to all that inactivity. I don’t eat much and in fact can’t eat very main foods so it’s gotta be the inactivity.

I’m not worried about it though. Sometimes when my Crohn’s disease really flares up bad I can barely eat or else the food that I do eat goes right through me so there’s been times when I’ve lost more than 40 pounds in two weeks! When I didn’t need to lose that much.

That’s mostly what I meant when I said my weight fluctuates. I’ll maintain for a while and then have a huge drop due to this terrible disease. So I’m not too bothered by having a little extra weight right now because I know that sometime in the near future it will just drop off when my Crohn’s gets even worse. The tiny bit of extra weight that I have on me right now might even help me get through a bad bad flare.

I might try some natural health products for my Crohn’s

August 21, 2007 by Tricia

I used to be very interested in natural health products. In fact we still have a number of different supplements and various single vitamins in our cupboard. Unfortunately they’re very old so I should probably get rid of them.

Considering that I’ve got Crohn’s disease and my health has been poor over the last couple of years I have considered trying some natural health supplements again. I know that there are some that are said to be quite helpful with irritable bowel (not what I have) and inflammatory bowel conditions as well as digestive disorders.

In fact, Oasis Advanced Wellness carries some of the natural health products that I’ve heard are helpful such as digestive enzymes, Cat’s Claw (TOA-Free Cat’s Claw) and they even have some natural pain management supplements called MSM Supreme and Zymitol that might be worth trying.

I mean if you’ve been reading my blogs you know I’ve been having a very hard time. It’s worth trying everything possible when you are this uncomfortable.
