Walks in the park

January 29, 2008 by Tricia

The weather finally warmed up enough over the weekend and today that we were able to take our puppy to the park for the first time.

We’ve had her since the end of November but because she still had two sets of shots and a rabies vaccination to get we weren’t officially able to take her to parks or other places frequented by a lot of dogs until about a week ago. Trouble was we were in a deep freeze here in Toronto when we first would have been able to take her to the park that I can see from my front door!

Sunday evening, after a busy day, we brought her to the park. We’d wanted to get a long lead but given how she still likes to taste everything that crosses her path we decided to take her to the park on her normal 6 foot leash.

She loved the park! Her nose was down to the ground most of the time as she smelled all the others dogs that had been there previously.

We met a couple of other dogs and their owners too.

After we left the park we realized that her leash had actually broken. The rivets that held the handle together had fallen out! All four of them! We also noticed that the little plastic trash can that holds the poop bags was missing.

Around that time we heard a man coming. He was calling out a name, lets say it was “Morty” … he was yelling “Morty get over here” … “Here” … “come here!” As he staggered along. We looked up and saw quite a large dog heading our way. It stayed away from us as it was just walking peacefully to the park it’s leash dragging behind it, as it ignored his probably drunk owner.

We waited for the man and dog to pass and then headed back to the park. The man and loose dog made us nervous. Our puppy is small and Chris is actually a little bit afraid of strange dogs. Never the less Chris went into the park while I waited outside the fence. We figured it would be safer to keep our puppy away from the loose dog.

Chris ended up having a very strange conversation with the drunk or maybe schizo man. The man really made Chris nervous and I was getting weird vibes from him too.

Chris came out of the park and we walked to another entrance. We then tried to retrace our previous path to try to find our poopy bag container. We found it way on the other side of the park where I thought it would be. Where we should have walked in the first place but the weird man with the loose dog was in that area so we retraced our steps from the beginning.

The next day we went to Petsmart to return the broken leash that we’d only had for about three weeks. We also returned a few other items like treats that we’d given to our puppy that had given her diarrhea. She’s got a very sensitive tummy! With our refund we got a new leash and a 30 foot lead.

We figured what the heck. She didn’t try to pick up anything in her mouth while in the park the night before as she was too busy smelling everything and or playing with other dogs. So on Monday we took her to the park on the long lead and she had a BALL.

That night she met a dog named Cooper … a mix that looked like it might have had a bit of Golden Retriever in it, and a Black Great Dane called Luna. The Great Dane was only 7 months old. We have two Great Danes in our Puppy class that are supposed to be about 5 months old and both are huge compared to the 7 month old that we met last night.

Anyway, we had fun and going to the park will become a regular part, hopefully, of each day. At least one walk will be to the park … well unless it’s freezing cold out!

Tired of hearing about celebrity problems

January 27, 2008 by Tricia

I haven’t been writing in my celebrity blog very much lately. Why? Well for a while there it seemed that just about every star was battling some kind of drug or alcohol addiction or was checking into drug rehab. I simply got sick of writing about it!

Now that a whole crop of new stars are pregnant and or have just given birth perhaps it’s a sign that things are changing on the celeb scene a bit? Maybe I’ll start writing in my blog Celebrity Scoop a little bit more. Actually I hope to start writing about more of the fashion trend and hot items that the stars are buying. Purses, shoes, the latest clothing and try to find comparable products that we, the common people, can afford. Wish me luck?

I hate having allergies

January 26, 2008 by Tricia

Last night we took our puppy to her 7th puppy training class. Next week is graduation! I think we’ve got a bit of work to do in the next week practicing our “stay” command as that’s the one command that she really doesn’t do well and she’ll be tested next week.

This class was a grooming class. Why we really needed that I don’t know as I’ve already been grooming my puppy on my own … but oh well. One of the things our trainer discussed was using shampoos, dry shampoos and doggy colognes!

He passed around bottles of the doggy colognes and sprayed a few of the dogs with them too.

Now I’ve got a lot of allergies and one of my major ones is to scented products … usually it’s products that are artificially scented (that means almost all products these days!) as the scent is often petroleum based. Well it got my allergies going and I was hoping I wouldn’t need my asthma inhaler as I didn’t bring my purse to class. So that meant I didn’t have my puffer with me at all! Not a good move.

Heck … I don’t even have a medical bracelet anymore. I had one but I seem to have misplaced it. I guess I need to look over the various styles of medical id bracelets again and pick one out.

I’ve got some serious chronic health problems and a few serious allergies that cause anaphylactic reactions so I should wear a medical ID bracelet.

Do any of you have severe allergies? Do you wear a medical id bracelet?

My knees don’t like this cold weather

January 23, 2008 by Tricia

Oh my aching knees!

The weather here in Toronto has been strange this month. January began with a major snow storm, then it warmed up, so much so it seemed very spring like, and then in the last week it’s been like living in the Arctic.

I must be getting older because I’m feeling all these weather changes. Especially when it’s really cold outside. Ok it’s not really aging. I have Crohns disease and it can affect your joints too. I’m sure that’s what it is.

If I’ve been sitting for a while and then have to get up to go upstairs to use the washroom my knees protest. Walking up the stairs really hurts. Of course by the time I’ve been moving around for a little bit knees usually start to feel a bit better, but those first few minutes are bad.

My mom had a bad back and bad knees too. As her pain got worse we started to worry about her walking up and down the stairs. Luckily my parents had set up their home so that they didn’t have to go up and down the stairs all that often, but of course the freezer was in the basement so there would be occasional trips downstairs to get things out of the freezer.

When my father passed away we worried about my mom even more. She got around pretty well – especially when she didn’t have to navigate stairs, but being alone in the house presented new problems. What if she fell on the stairs … there was no one there to hear her fall or to help her.

My husband came up with the idea of installing one of those stair lifts. I think my mother liked the idea, but we could never fully talk her into it.

Now with my knees starting to speak their mind more and more often I almost wish that we’d install a stair lift here. I’m always going up and down the stairs. The main bathroom is upstairs. Now that we have a puppy in the house I’m also going outside and again up and down stairs outside all the time too.

You can bet that if we ever move I’ll be sure to buy a house with a bathroom and maybe even a bedroom on the main floor.

You know what grinds my gears? Rude people

January 19, 2008 by Tricia

The other day I was walking down the street to my doctors office. I’m lucky enough to live within walking distance to a few of my doctors.

Unfortunately during the time that I was walking, there were also a number of parents or perhaps nannies/babysitters walking from the nearby school with their young children. Every group of people I passed totally blocked the sidewalk.

Don’t people move over to one side when walking on a street or pathway anymore?

Just to get by these people I had to walk on the grassy boulevard or stop in peoples driveways as a they passed by using the whole sidewalk. As a result my shoes got damp and covered in mud as it was a warm winter day and things were melting.

Come on people. Have some courtesy. I was always taught to move to the side, usually the right, when people are passing. If you’re walking in a group go single file when you pass others.

It’s just the polite thing to do!

Plus, while I may look like a fairly health woman I have a chronic disease that causes me constant pain and I was in a great deal of pain that day. Slowing my walk by having to wait for others to pass by, and walking on uneven ground when people were to rude to allow me to share the sidewalk only caused me more pain.
