Raise your activity level and lose some pounds

January 13, 2008 by Tricia

I was saying on my other blog that I’ve lost some weight in the last two months. Ever since we got our puppy in November my activity level has gone way up and that’s resulted in me losing a few extra pounds.

Since I hadn’t been all that active prior to getting the puppy I’d gained some weight. Also, being on steroids didn’t help either! That’s the trouble with having a chronic illness, Crohns, you can’t do much when you feel lousy! But when you have a puppy you have to go out no matter how bad you feel.

I’ve never been a big eater. In fact, in the last year I generally only finish half or less of my meal when we go out to a restaurant and obviously my portions at home have gotten a lot smaller. So food was never the problem. Lack of activity was! I can’t eat that much because of the Crohn’s either. Rice, boiled or broiled chicken, baked fish, some steamed veggies and nutritional supplements tend to make up 90% or more of my regular diet.

I’d say another month of going on several daily walks with my puppy and I’ll be back to my normal weight or better.

Have you set any goals to become more active or get in better shape this year? If so, what are you doing to achieve your goal?

Strange weather is making me achy

January 8, 2008 by Tricia

The weather here in Toronto has been strange lately. We were hit with snow early in the season – November, and now we’re having a warm spell right after a really bad cold spell.

I think all these weather changes are affecting the way I feel. I mean, last week when it was -20 Celsius (-4 F) my knee was aching really bad and now that it’s 14 Celsius (55 F) and raining my knee is aching again. It’s gotta be the weather.

On top of that I think I’m also getting a migraine! But don’t tell my pain doctor (for my Crohns) as she asks me every time I see her if I’ve got migraines. Why I don’t know … maybe I’d fit her “pain profile” better if I did have migraines all the time or something.

Anyone else affected by the weather like this?

Thanks to travel insurance I could have canceled my trip

December 6, 2007 by Tricia

I’m so glad I bought travel insurance when I went to Las Vegas. I knew it was a good idea. I’ve got Crohns and I’d been very sick for about a month and a half before we left for our trip. In fact, I’d even been in the hospital for a bowel obstruction just a few days before we got on our flight!

I shouldn’t have gone on the trip at all given the circumstances, but I went anyway … knowing that I’d purchased the deluxe medical insurance and travel insurance package. I could have canceled my trip and the travel insurance would have allowed me to get a refund since I really was sick and had proof of my illness. Without the insurance I would have lost money if I’d canceled.

As it was I got even sicker while in Vegas. I seriously considered seeing a doctor or going to a hospital!

Once we got home I continued to be sick for about a week longer then I started to feel better. Thats when we got the puppy and now due to lack of sleep and too much activity I think my Crohns is starting to act up again. I can’t seem to win.

Do you purchase travel insurance when you buy your tickets for a flight? Have you ever had to use your insurance?

We’re home and I’m freezing!

November 12, 2007 by Tricia

We’re back from Las Vegas!

I was just saying on my gardening blog that I already miss the Vegas weather as it’s cold and dreary here in Toronto! I am, however, very glad to be home since I continued to be quite sick while I was away on my trip and managed to get even sicker!

It’s much better to be at home when you feel absolutely horrible. If my Crohn’s acting up wasn’t enough I woke up with a terribly sore throat this morning. I’ve been drinking warm liquids all day and sometimes it feels a bit better but then it gets worse again. I hope it’s just post nasal drip or something making my throat feel so bad and not strep throat or something.

Other than not feeling very well while I was in Las Vegas I managed to have a good time. I met up with some bloggers that I’ve known for years, others that I’ve only known a short while and hopefully made a few new blogging friends too.

We never managed to have time to try out the gambling in Vegas, so I missed out on that experience -gambling virgin that I am! Oh well. We did go out to a few clubs, one of which was the famous TAO nightclub at the Venetian Hotel.

TAO is huge! It’s a beautiful nightclub though, and the staff were very friendly. Oh and their finger foods were delicious! They served us spring rolls, sushi, won tons filled with shrimp and lobster, Kobe beef mini hamburgers and tiny deserts. I’m sure there were a few other finger foods that I missed too. All were delicious!

On Thursday night my husband and I got together with Mr. Fab from Pointless Drivel. He’d already eaten but he met us at the Outback while we ate. We then got in touch with some of the other bloggers that were in town for the convention and we all eventually met up at a bar called Tattoo Alley.

What a great time!

The band was fantastic and I think we all had a good time drinking and talking and joking around. My husband Chris bought a feathered boa for Mr. Fab and when the other bloggers joined up with us the boa got passed around. I think Colleen or Jules were last scene wearing it.

I’ve got lots of photos to upload and post. Some could be embarrassing to those who were with us that night! I’ll get them up soon!

More about my trip later. I’m still recovering!

I made sure I’m insured

November 8, 2007 by Tricia

Oh speaking of Vegas … I’m glad I took out medical insurance. I’ve been so sick with my crohns in the past week that I seriously thought about canceling my trip. I actually should have since I ended up having a bowel obstruction. Believe me, I don’t want to end up in a hospital in the States but if I do I did take out insurance.

I think my husband wishes we got a new term life insurance quote! He’s terrified of flying and I’m sure he thinks that something bad will happen either on the way there or the way back! Me I’m more worried that something will happen while we’re there such as me getting sicker! I’m also the worlds biggest clutz too so you just never know what will happen with me around.

Keep some good thoughts going that our flight and short stay in Vegas go well?
