My back is aching again

October 14, 2010 by Tricia

My back has been hurting again lately. I’m disappointed because, for the last month or so my back was doing very well.

I’ve just quit smoking and I’m taking a medication called Zyban to help me quit. This medication and I suppose quitting can make you tense … maybe my muscles are all tensed up and that’s why my back is suddenly aching again?

I haven’t been sleeping very well the last week or so either. I keep waking up after a few hours with back pain. It would be amazing to have one of those adjustable beds as I’m sure I’d finally get a good nights sleep. Not to mention the fact that my back probably wouldn’t hurt as much, if at all.

Maybe once I’ve been quit smoking for two weeks or more my body will relax and if I’m lucky my back will stop hurting again and I’ll start to get some good sleep again as well.

Forgetting to eat? Yep

September 18, 2010 by Tricia

This is a strange thing for me to have to say but I think I’m going to have to start eating MORE.

I was just saying on my main blog that ever since I started taking a new medication for my migraines (that’s working for the most part) I’ve been losing weight.

The medication has a lot of side effects and I think I’ve been experiencing most of them. LOL Tingling hands and feet, brain fog, weird vision – ie bright peripheral flashes, trouble finding words, slurring, tiredness, anorexia (lack of appetite), taste perversion (food and drink tastes funny or bad) and of course weight loss. The weight loss may be a simple result of all the side effects making me feel so weird, and of course of having less of an appetite and then when I do try to eat or drink anything it tastes weird, different or just not as good as it used to taste.

The company that makes this migraine medication (actually it’s a drug for epilepsy) actually tried to get it approved as a diet medication but that didn’t work out because of all the other side effects I think.

Anyway … as it stands … I did have some extra weight on me when I started taking this medication but now, as a result of all of the side effects and the weight loss I know I won’t be doing a search for diet pills that really work any time soon … because I’ve lost at least 12 pounds in the last three weeks. Maybe more – the last time I was weighed was at my doctors office and most doctors scales seem to be set a little higher so I might have really lost 15+ pounds.

If this keeps up I’m going to be skinny! So … I think I’d better start eating more often … small snacks every couple of hours just to make sure I’m eating. I’m actually forgetting to eat – that’s not good!

Thinking about going back to work

September 11, 2010 by Tricia

I’ve been feeling a lot better over the last couple of weeks.

If you’re a regular reader of this blog or perhaps my main blog you’ll probably remember that I’ve been off work on (unpaid) medical leave for almost five years due to a severe Crohn’s flare up.

During my time off my back also started to act up – probably as a result of not being as physically active as I used to be, and last year my migraines suddenly came back – really bad, with extended visual auras, 24/7 dizziness, brain fog and massive pain.

The good news is that for most of this year my Crohn’s seems to have been settling down. My back has been a lot better as well.

Then in Mid August I saw a neurologist (after having an MRI) and he suggested that I take an anti-convulsive for my migraines – yes it sounded odd to me, but the drug is supposed to help those with migraines and tada … within a day of starting the new medication (Topamax) the constant migraine that I’d had for at least three straight months started to ease off.

The new medication has lots of side effects – I feel kind of dopey, my hands and feet tingle, and everything just tilts every once is a while … but the migraines have disappeared. I’m a little headachey here and there but I think this is going to work.

If the side effects would die down and if the migraines stay away, as well as the Crohns I might either be able to return to my old nursing job in the ER or if that doesn’t suit me anymore maybe try looking for a more suitable health care career that works with health issues.

Last year I didn’t really think I’d ever return to work. Now I have new hope that I might just be back to work by the end of the year or perhaps by the start of the new year. I’d be happy if that happened!

My Crohn’s is finally getting a little better

June 2, 2010 by Tricia

I’m feeling awful today. My back is acting up again and so is my stomach or rather my Crohns. It seems when one thing goes wrong for me just about everything else does too.

I do have to admit that my Crohn’s has been a little better lately. I still have some very bad days, but compared to the last few years of mostly all bad days this is better. Maybe it’s finally slowing down.

I’ve been trying a few things like taking a spoonful of drinkable Aloe Vera Gel each day. It tastes awful … kind of like what I think drinking Purell might taste like. Ugh. I’ve also been taking two acidophilus probiotic tablets a day to increase the good bacteria in my intestines. I’ve had several other people with Crohn’s tell me that these two things have helped them quite a bit. So it’s worth a try. I’m also giving irvingia a go as well.

I’ve been sick and stuck at home on medical leave from my work as a nurse in one of Canada’s busiest emergency rooms for 5 years now. It’s about time I started to feel better. I’d like to get back to work if I can, but more importantly I’d just like to feel a lot better.

Just when I thought my back was getting better

April 6, 2010 by Tricia

My darn back is out again. It was doing good for a few months, but I over did it in the garden this weekend and wouldn’t you know it my back started aching again.

It figures.

I’d love to go to a chiropractor or get a massage. I think that would help my back a lot, but since I’ve been on medical leave from work for a few years I no longer have health benefits (although I’m technically still employed). I actually started looking for health insurance earlier today at insurancespecialists.com and a few other places. Unfortunately I still can’t really afford it. You know … considering that I’m not really working.

Maybe I can talk my husband in to giving me a massage when he gets home from work? Uh huh .. he’ll probably think that will lead to other things. LOL

What do you do for your back when it’s aching?
