The worst border we ever had

July 13, 2007 by Tricia

Last year about this time we lost faith in our Korean border. She’d been living with us for a few weeks when she decided to take the weekend trip to New York that the English as a Second language school she was attending offered.

Trouble was – she went to New York as planned, but didn’t come home on the Monday when we expected her to return. We were upset. We were scared for her!

Did she ever make it to the meeting area in Toronto? Did she get on the bus? Did something happen in New York? We called the school and the agency that had matched us up and no one new where she was. The guy at the agency said “she’s a young girl, she’s probably just out having fun”. Yeah, but the contract we signed with the agency made us responsible for her so if something happened …

We finally found out – when she called us on the Tuesday evening while still in New York, that she’d contacted a new york ticket broker on her own and got there by her own means and met friends who were visiting the US.

We were mad. She’d worried us and lied to us. She had told us all the week before that she was taking the trip with the school. Even that Friday morning as she left she told me she was meeting the other students for the bus to New York at a particular time.

After that it was all lies. She broke things and didn’t tell us, lied to us daily and even tried to steal food when she thought we weren’t looking. It’s not like we weren’t feeding her well already …

She pretty much finished us with our foreign border experiment. I know most people have good experiences but she was a head case. She even told one of our neighbors that she was was very rich and had body guards here in Canada … uh, no. No you didn’t.

I still get shivers just thinking of what she put us through.

Neighbors could make selling home difficult

July 6, 2007 by Tricia

I was just writing about how the cost of real estate in my general area has gone up and up since we moved into our home 6 years ago. I figure that the cost of our home – if we were to try to sell it – would be more than double what we paid for it!

Sounds great, but when you realize that you’d also be paying double for whatever new home you moved to it doesn’t make all that much sense to sell if you are happy with your home.

Still, I might call our real estate broker and see if she’ll appraise our home. It’d be cool to find out what it’s worth right now.

Of course if we did sell our home the new owners would have to put up with the karaoke neighbors! OMG what a terrible thought … can you imagine if we were trying to sell our home and the neighbors started up with their Gawd awful singing and loud music! We’d never be able to sell the house!

Note to self – remember to ask the neighbors to be on their best behavior if you sell the house before they do! Well, if they are still into karaoke at that time.

Teak furniture for outdoors

July 5, 2007 by Tricia

Don’t you just love teak outdoor furniture? We have a beautiful reclaimed teak wood table that we use in our garden each summer.

Teak is so heavy! The table that we have is maybe 2.5 to 3 feet in length – the top is an irregular shape so it’s hard to give an exact measurement – and I’d say 2.5 feet in height but it must weigh well over 100 pounds.

I oil it with danish teak oil each year because it does get a weathered look by the end of summer. The oil restores the table top and makes the wood look like new. You know when wood is wet and you can see all the patterns in it? That’s what happens when I oil it. The fine colors of the wood grain.

I love that table! I might even look for another piece to complement the teak table we have.

Family reunion planning

July 5, 2007 by Tricia

At the end of August we’re going to have a big family get together. My three brothers, my sister and all their kids are going to be coming to the Toronto area for a reunion week. We’re going to have a week of barbeque’s, fine dinning, and one of the days we are going to go on one of the Toronto dinner cruises on Lake Ontario.

Both of my parents are gone now and when my mother died in 2003 we all said that we’d make an effort to get together at least once a year. I don’t think we managed to do it in 2004 – but we’d spent a huge portion of the previous year together as my mother was dying. Work wise and probably emotional recovery wise we just weren’t able to do it.

In 2005 we got together in Ottawa. Our former hometown. We did the same last year for my aunts 80th birthday and this year it’s going to be in the Toronto area where three of us live now.

I’ve got a lot of planning to do. I’ve still got to book the cruise that we’re going to go on. I was thinking that we might go up north to Alora to see the Alora Gorge and to water tube down the river. That’s so fun!

Have you ever been tubing? We all went up there a number of years ago and tubed down the gorge. It was a really hot day so the cool water was beautiful!

Does your family have regular reunions?

The mailbox lid stays open

July 5, 2007 by Tricia

I need to get a new mailbox. I’ve been saying that for a while but I really need to get one. We’ve got one of those Mailboxes that are mounted on a wall and the lid will barely close now.

It just stays open when the mailman comes along to put mail in it. I have to push down hard on the lid to close it. It opens just fine but it wants to stay open all the time.

I’m going to go out shopping this weekend for some new clothes. I guess I’ll make a stop at a few other stores to look for a new mailbox too.
