Sniffle sniffle … cough cough

January 28, 2010 by Tricia

I can’t hear very well, I’m mouth breathing and my eye sight is blurred from tears. Yes, you guessed it, I have a bad head cold.

I don’t think it helps that I’m attempting to make ribs in my slow cooker right now either. I think the BBQ sauce (ie vinegar and onions in it) is making my eyes water more than they would be.

I know it’s just a cold, but I haven’t had one for close to 15 years so I’m absolutely miserable! I’d sure hate to be trying to get a life insurance quote right now with the way I look and sound!

Hopefully I’ll feel a bit better tomorrow. Otherwise, if you don’t hear from me for a day or two it’s probably just the cold that’s keeping me away from the computer.

Spaghetti and meat sauce – yum!

January 20, 2010 by Tricia

Tonight I’m making my home made tomato meat sauce and spaghetti for dinner. Yummy!

Ok it’s not totally home made … what I do is combine a canned of stewed tomatoes and a jar of tasty tomato sauce, a pinch or two of Italian seasoning, plus some extra Thyme and Basil, some ground pepper, and my “secret ingredient” two tbsp of brown sugar.

Then I fry up about a pound of lean or extra lean hamburger and once it’s cooked I add it to the sauce mixture and let it simmer for an hour or more on low heat. I almost never use regular ground beef as it’s too greasy … plus if I did I’d have to use something like Fastin to keep the weight off! LOL

Once the sauce is almost done I measure out enough spaghetti for my husband and I (with a small helping for our dog!) and cook that for the required amount of time – usually between 8 and 11 minutes depend upon what brand of spaghetti I’m using or what kind (ie whole wheat versus regular).

Once the Spaghetti is done I toss it in a tiny bit of olive oil, serve it in bowls or on plates and then top it with some of the delicious sauce. I think most people mix the sauce and spaghetti or toss them together, but I just like the sauce on top and I mix it as I eat my meal.

Since there’s only two of us, the meat sauce mixture makes enough for about 8 meals … so I often freeze half of the sauce to use a week or so later and then we eat Spaghetti for two days or so with the sauce I didn’t freeze.

I like making big batches of food – It’s not easy cooking for two, and since I don’t feel all that well quite a bit of the time it’s nice to have food that’s already cooked that we can just thaw or heat up easily … or rather that my husband can heat up if I’m really feeling bad. LOL

Do you ever make your own meat sauce for spaghetti? Do you make extra food (whatever kind) to freeze for later use?

What diets have worked for you?

January 20, 2010 by Tricia

Back in early December you might remember I set off on a quest to lose 5 to 10 pounds. The reason? Well, my niece was getting married on December 30th and I wanted to look good for her wedding. The wedding was fabulous BTW. I must post some pictures some time soon!

Anyway… I was successful. I lost about 7 pounds in December and I’ve continued to loose a few pounds this month as well. I mainly just increased my activity since I already eat well. Plus … since I have Crohn’s Disease there are a lot of foods that I just can’t eat or well digest, so I’ve always been fairly careful about my diet.

A few people have asked me how I’ve been losing weight and that got me thinking that I should maybe write a post or two about diets that work well. So … if you’ve been on a diet in the last year or two and you’ve found one that works maybe you could tell me about it? Then I’ll compose a post about various diets or things to cut out of your regular meal plans in order to lose weight.

What moisturizer can I use on myself that won’t be toxic for my dog?

January 20, 2010 by Tricia

Yesterday I wrote a post about how my skin scars really easily … all I need to do is have a tiny little scratch and it will scar when it heals. Bad eh?

Anyway, I did some research on different products I could try to lessen the scars that I get and I found out that stretch marks cream might help. Also, my scarring might happen more often because my skin is kind of dry, so if I moisturize more often I might not scar up so much!

The only problem I have with using moisturizer is that I have a Labrador Retriever and she loves to lick! She licks our feet, our hands, our neck and face, even our clothes. If I do put moisturizer on during the day she instantly comes up to me and tries to lick it off. I’ve actually tried contacting the manufacturers of some of my favorite moisturizers to find out if it’s safe for pets (ie if they lick you when you have just put moisturizer on) and they told me to consult with our veterinarian … like a veterinarian will know more about their product than they do?

Do any of you know of any moisturizers that are safe to use around pets that like to try to lick it off … I mean human skin moisturizers of course.

Can’t wait for dinner

January 19, 2010 by Tricia

I absolutely cannot wait to eat dinner tonight. I’m so hungry! I’ve been hungry for hours! Unfortunately I had to wait for my husband to come home before I could eat (ok I did eat a granola bar but it didn’t help).

Dinner should be ready soon though. Yum!

Last week I made three pans of meat loaf. I know, not everyone likes meatloaf … even I didn’t until recently, but mine is good! I put onion, garlic, and green pepper in mine so it’s quite tasty. We ate the first meat loaf in two or three days and the other two I sliced into individual servings and froze, so now all I have to do is pull out enough for a dinner for two and tada .. half of our dinner is already made and just needs to be thawed and heated.

I was just saying on my other blog that I’ve been more hungry than usual for several days! I certainly won’t need a diet aid if my body keeps doing this. My metabolism must be going off at a higher rate lately, otherwise I don’t know why I’m so hungry. I’ve been a little more active than normal but surely not enough to make me feel this hungry all the time.
