Midnight got her first heartworm test

May 30, 2008 by Tricia

We took Midnight to the vet earlier this evening. She had to have her first heartworm test.

It was actually the first time she’d ever had blood work done too and she was nervous. She’s usually pretty good when we go to the vet, but it seems pretty much each time we go she sees a different vet. I don’t know why, but she was stress from the moment we went into the exam room.

Chris and the doctor struggled to get her up on the exam table and then she leaned into Chris so that she could be as far away from the vet as possible. It’s too bad because this vet was really nice. Our favorite vet at the clinic left recently to start his own clinic in Scarborough … so we probably won’t be going to see him since it’s so far. Since this vet was nice we’ll try to make more appointments with him if we can.

The other vets at the clinic all seem to be chauvinistic and talk down to me … or don’t even talk to me when I ask questions. No, this isn’t my imagination. Chris has noticed and it’s ticked him off .. especially since I’m a nurse and I can understand the information that the doctors are telling us .. but when one won’t talk to me it’s kind of hard not to get ticked off.

Anyway … Midnight was very good for her blood test. Didn’t even flinch – which I presume means the doctor did a good job with that needle.

Hopefully the heartworm test will be negative. We left the clinic with a box of heartworm pills – Sentinel brand. We didn’t get the Heartgard brand as it has Ivermectin in it and I’ve heard about far too many exotic animals and a few dogs that have died after being treated with Ivermectin … so no, not taking any chances with my puppy!

Funny thing … before we left Midnight warmed up to the doctor and started playing with him. Unfortunately she took a shining to his watch. I think it was a Patek and well … she knocked it off his wrist. Oops!

It pays to lend our barbecue to neighbors!

May 28, 2008 by Tricia

On Sunday night Chris and I were going to have a nice steak barbecue dinner to celebrate my Google Adsense Break through. However, our neighbor had borrowed our BBQ as he was having a big family dinner and much to his dismay he discovered that his barbecue had suddenly stopped working.

Lucky for us, when Chris went over to get our BBQ he asked us if we wanted to join them for dinner as he’d cooked up several extra steaks, chicken breasts and lamb. I wasn’t feeling that great and since I’d meant our dinner to be a bit of a celebration we declined his offer for dinner. So … he loaded up two plates full of meats, grilled veggies and desserts!

The food he gave us was enough for four people!

Needless to say we didn’t barbecue our steak that night. We ate our neighbors bonanza of food. We also opened a bottle of Red Wine. It was an Australian Shiraz-Grenache. The wine was lovely. It reminded me of a beautiful Merlot that some doctors that I used to work with make in their Grimsby Winery – Thirty Bench.

We had a fantastic meal, accompanied by a wine that I’ll be sure to purchase again. In fact we enjoyed that wine so much that I’m thinking of joining a wine club so that I can try new wines regularly. We aren’t big drinkers, but we do enjoy a glass of fine wine every now and then with our meals.

As for that steak that we were going to have on Sunday evening … well we had it this evening. I’d put a marinade on it on Sunday and leaving it on that long turned out to have been a great idea. The steak was great.

Chris has been out of town more than he’s been home this week

May 10, 2008 by Tricia

I think my husbands been out of town more days in the last week than he’s been home. His cousin died last week and we traveled to Brantford – about an hour and a half outside Toronto to visit with the family.

Unfortunately on our first trip there last weekend our car broke down on the road. We managed to make it to the in-laws but that evening we left our car in Brantford and drove back with Chris’ brother. The way things worked out – Chris went back to Brantford on Monday and couldn’t pick me up to go to the visitations or the funeral because the car wasn’t fixed until Tuesday afternoon.

Now he’s back in Brantford for a big party for his dad. I’d be there too but his father booked non-pet friendly hotel rooms for the whole family (his house would be overflowing with guests if he hadn’t) and that meant that we couldn’t take the dog. So I’m home dog sitting.

Before Chris left this morning he told me something that he’d forgotten. When he was talking to the people at the garage they offered to put one of those fancy Ford grills on our car. Huh … our car was there for an emergency repair in a city that wasn’t our home city. What were they thinking? Not that we don’t like the fancy grills or anything, but no … if we were going to get something like that done we’d do it here in Toronto.

Anyway I’m home this evening and I’m totally bored. When Chris comes home tomorrow afternoon we’ll have to get out and do something. Perhaps we’ll take the dog to the beach. I just hope Chris isn’t too tired to do something interesting … I’m so bored I’m going to have to do something by tomorrow or I’ll go squirrelly.

Things to do with our dog this summer?

April 27, 2008 by Tricia

Chris and I are excited about having our puppy around and the fact that we’ll more than likely be outside doing more interesting activities this year as a result.

We’ve even gone so far as to brainstorm regarding all the different places we can take our dog and what interesting things we can do with her. I’ve mentioned many times that I’ve enjoyed just getting out each day to take her for a walk, but we can do so much more.

For example we love taking her to the park and watching her run around on her long leash. We aren’t comfortable with her going leashless yet although she’s fairly responsive when we call her to come to us. We’ve also taken her to a few of our Toronto beaches already. I’m sure she’ll really enjoy that in the heat of the summer when she can take a nice dip in the cool waters of Lake Ontario to cool off.

Lately I’ve been considering getting skate shoes. She loves her walks, but if I get skate shoes I could go even farther with her without over tiring myself.

I think she’s still a little too young and not obedient enough to tag along beside our bikes if we went riding … plus they say you really shouldn’t take young dogs running for any major distances until they are about two years old as they can hurt themselves more easily.

Anyone have any great suggestions as to what else we can do with our dog this summer?

BTW we’re enjoying a feast today thanks to our neighbors and the fact that they are celebrating Greek Orthodox Easter. Take a look at the delicacies they gave us! Yummmmm!

Brantford’s playing for the Allan Cup

April 19, 2008 by Tricia

My husbands all excited because he was channel surfing and discovered that his hometown hockey team is playing a game in Brantford that ‘s being televised on TSN. It looks like the Brantford Blasts are in the finals for the Allan Cup.

He’d talked to his dad earlier today and his dad is at the game, so we’re watching for him in the stands.

My father in law yells pretty loud so I’m sure we’ll hear him even if we don’t see him!

I can’t believe they’re advertising Rolex watches on the sideboards. In Brantford? Now that’s strange!

Anyone else watching the Allan Cup? Gretzky’s youngest brother is playing for Brantford. Have I mentioned that we know the family?
