Strange job offer emails

August 13, 2008 by Tricia

I keep getting these strange email from Career sites. Sites that I joined a long long time ago … like the mid 90’s! You know, the type of job search sites where you can create a profile and put your resume online?

Well I’ve been getting strange responses by email for both my husband and my resumes. The responses are job offers for Jewelery stores or jewelery companies in Europe. I wonder if these sites are starting to be hacked or spammed? I mean, we love in Canada – why would someone offer either of use a job in Europe? Yes were were both Jewelers and by that I mean we actually made jewelery, sized rings, set stones etc. So we have the skills … but Europe has some of the finest Jewelry trades people so why even bother to look in North America.

I think it’s a scam.

I’d take our resumes off these sites but I don’t have access anymore. The email that I used back them is for a site that doesn’t exist and I can’t remember the password so I can’t get into the accounts. Grrr … I hate that. I guess I’ll have to write to the sites support and have the resumes and profiles removed.

Trying to be money smart

August 11, 2008 by Tricia

I had gotten so use to our Canadian dollar being slightly higher than the US dollar that I didn’t notice when our dollar took a nose dive. I only noticed it the other day when I transferred my paypal earnings to my bank account and for the first time in a long time the Canadian funds were higher than the US funds from which I was changing over.

I guess in some ways this is good for me since I tend to get paid in US dollars, so that means I actually earn a tiny bit more than my US counterparts. However it’s probably not good news for our economy. Maybe I should start looking into investing my money with a futures broker before things get worse?

Now don’t go thinking that I believe we’re headed for really bad times. I don’t think Canada will do that badly over the next few years even if they do take a down turn. Our economy has been very good for most of the last decade, whereas the US economy took a downturn around 911 and kept on going down.

If you have any money to spare have you thought of investing it or putting it into a higher interest account?

My husband and I have accounts at ING as well as at National banks. We keep money in our regular (national bank accounts) just to pay the bills, but any extra goes into the ING accounts because they offer something like 4% interest on any amount of funds in the account, where as standard bank accounts only give you a small percentage of 1% and usually only when you maintain a balance of $1000 or more.

The other thing I like about our ING accounts is that while we do have some Registered saving accounts we also have regular savings accounts that allow us to access our money any time we want so it’s not like our money is tied up for three, six or 12 months or more just to earn that interest.

Whether the Canadian economy takes a dive or not I’m going to keep trying to save as much money as I can. I know it will help in the future!

Poor miserable me

August 10, 2008 by Tricia

I’ve been feeling terrible all week. As some of you know I suffer from Crohn’s Disease and it’s been acting up quite a bit this week. On top of that I’ve had a migraine/headache since Monday (I think it might finally be going away), high fevers and now both of my knees are aching.

I think the knee pain is partially from all the rain and cool weather we’ve had in the last few day, but Crohn’s can also affect your joints so that might be part of it too.

On top of all that my stomach is growling like crazy. I feel empty, like I’ve taken diet pills and their making my metabolism burn higher and higher.

I hate complaining that I’m not feeling well almost as much as I hate not feeling well. Writing this out occasionally seems to help though.

Our home theater system isn’t working

August 9, 2008 by Tricia

I’m so ticked off. Our home theater system still doesn’t work. Every time we try to turn it on it says “overload” yet we’ve tried unplugging just about everything that the Home Theater system is connected to (excluding the TV) and it still says overload.

At first we thought there might be a fuse inside that had blown, but now I think it’s just the machine that’s not working right and this is it’s way of telling us.

So the other day Chris and I were in Costco (that’s like Sam’s Club) to do a little shopping and I suggested that we look at new home theater systems. They only had three to choose from and we didn’t really like any of the choices so I guess we’ll keep looking.

I really miss using the home theater system. Chris loved to use it when watching sports – particularly hockey. I could do without that, but it was nice when we’d watch a movie, dvd or when I wanted to listen to music. We had it hooked up to or 200 CD disk player so with the surround sound it was perfect if you were having a party or wanted to listen to music for hours without changing CDs.

I guess we’ll eventually get a new Home Theater system or figure out what really is wrong with our current one. Sometime in the future, when we renovate the basement, the wide screen TV, home theater system, PVR, DVD player, DVD recorder, Disk player and even the home theater seating will all move to the basement. I want that to be our rec room area and as long as our basement stays dry (crossing fingers as it really is a dry basement) it would be a great area for settling in and watching a great movie.

Has your home theater system ever given you and overload message? Ours is a Panasonic. If so, what did you do about it?

New neighbors finally moved in

August 2, 2008 by Tricia

Well our new neighbors, the one that bought the house from our Karaoke neighbors and officially took ownership of the home sometime in May finally moved into their home last week.

They must have rented a small moving van, but I think that wasn’t enough as I saw several of their friends vans and cars loaded with moving boxes after their moving van was gone.

They still aren’t finished their renovations though. They currently have no ceiling in their living room, dining room and kitchen! They are waiting for their contractor to come and get the work done. It will be nice when it’s done though because they are putting pot lights in the ceiling. It will have a very nice modern look. Chris and I feel bad that their renovations are finished because it was us that suggested that they tear out their ceiling! Oh well … it will look nice when it’s done.

One of our other neighbors moved out of her house about two weeks ago and we’ve seen some people going inside the house a few times in the last day or two, so maybe the new people are about to move into that house soon too. Maybe they’ll be like T and C next door and renovate first before they move in.

Last Tuesday when T and C officially moved into their house Chris and I dropped by and gave them a box of deserts from a local bakery as a house warming gift. They were taking a break when we visited so we ended up talking with them for at least an hour. We both really like our new neighbors. Hopefully we’ll become friends as time goes by.
