Our neighbors home is still up for sale

December 10, 2007 by Tricia

Our neighbors house still hasn’t sold yet. I think it’s been up for sale since the end of September.

The other day I was in our back enclosed porch cleaning up the area so our puppy wouldn’t get into anything that might harm her and someone was seeing the house next door. The people stopped to talk on the porch and didn’t realize I was right next to them on my porch (the window in between is frosted) and I over heard them saying the house was too much of a fixer upper for them.

The house really does need work. The real estate agent originally had it listed at $349,000 but it looks like it’s been lowered to $333,000. Both prices are really good for our area. I’m fairly certain with the work we’ve done to our home we could list ours at close to one hundred thousand higher, but there home really is in bad shape inside.

Chris was talking to the owner the other day and he told Chris that mortgage companies won’t lend anyone money for the house because their oil tank is more than 15 years old. Hmmm so is ours but we have insurance. It makes me wonder if they don’t even have home insurance? Anyway, they are going to have the oil tank removed and install gas.

Still … their price is too high for their home. They’ve done absolutely nothing to fix it up at all.

It still looks like it was last decorated in the 60’s or 70’s and like nothing much has been done to it since then.

If they ever do manage to sell the house I hope we get good neighbors. That’s all I ask.

Those As Seen On TV products

December 10, 2007 by Tricia

The other day I mentioned that I sometimes end up channel surfing late at night and end up seeing some of those as seen on tv ads and infomercials on TV.

Have you ever watched any of those commercials? Some of the products actually look like they are really good ideas and that they might make it a bit easier to get some things done around the house.

Items like the one touch jar opener might be good to have around. Back when I was a jeweler my hands were incredibly strong. I did diamond cut designs on jewelery by hand. My husband was also a jewelery but unlike me he didn’t have to grip a precision tool all day long so I think my hands were stronger than his at that time. I could open the jars he couldn’t! Now my hands aren’t so strong so it might be great to have something around for those tough jars.

Steamers – I’d love a steamer to clean my oven and to clean so many other items in my home that have tough ground in stains. I’m sure the steam would help.

What As seen on TV products have you seen advertised that you’d like to try?

Thanks to travel insurance I could have canceled my trip

December 6, 2007 by Tricia

I’m so glad I bought travel insurance when I went to Las Vegas. I knew it was a good idea. I’ve got Crohns and I’d been very sick for about a month and a half before we left for our trip. In fact, I’d even been in the hospital for a bowel obstruction just a few days before we got on our flight!

I shouldn’t have gone on the trip at all given the circumstances, but I went anyway … knowing that I’d purchased the deluxe medical insurance and travel insurance package. I could have canceled my trip and the travel insurance would have allowed me to get a refund since I really was sick and had proof of my illness. Without the insurance I would have lost money if I’d canceled.

As it was I got even sicker while in Vegas. I seriously considered seeing a doctor or going to a hospital!

Once we got home I continued to be sick for about a week longer then I started to feel better. Thats when we got the puppy and now due to lack of sleep and too much activity I think my Crohns is starting to act up again. I can’t seem to win.

Do you purchase travel insurance when you buy your tickets for a flight? Have you ever had to use your insurance?

I’m hoping my new dog will help me get some exercise

December 6, 2007 by Tricia

I was just saying in my last post that one of the reasons we just got a puppy was so that I could have some incentive to get more exercise.

I’ve been stuck at home with Crohn’s Disease for two years now. Actually December 4th was the beginning of my third year at home. I hate this. I feel ill all the time and I’m in a lot of pain. This has naturally made me a lot less active than I used to be.

I used to be on my feet for 12 hours a day, constantly moving as I tended to patients in the Emergency Department where I worked. I also walk to and from work. Now that’s not aerobic activity but it certainly did burn calories and kept me busy!

Now my days are spent sitting in front of my desktop computer or using my laptop computer while sitting or lying down on the couch. I don’t eat much food, nor does it stay in me long thanks to the Crohns ( I know TMI), but I’ve gained some weight due to the inactivity. Not a ton, but enough that I’ve recently had to purchase larger clothes sizes much to my dismay. Being on prednisone, a steroid, in the last three months has also caused me to gain a bit more weight.

I must admit that I haven’t been using the elliptical trainer that I got in September either. Also, now that we have the puppy I barely have time to do much else but watch her so I don’t think I’ll be using it anytime soon.

So I need to get active, even if I don’t feel all that up to it. The puppy helps in that department. She’s a ball of energy and I often once I sit down I’ve got to get up two minutes later to see where she’s disappeared to. Labs chew everything so you’ve got to keep a close eye on them … plus she’s not yet fully house trained and still has accidents.

If the doggy diet/ workout doesn’t work maybe I’ll have to try something like Miracle burn, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to work.

Wish me luck!

Every thing is new to our puppy

November 29, 2007 by Tricia

We’ve been having a lot of fun with our puppy.

It seems she was raised in a barn so just about everything within our home is new to her.

The poor thing didn’t even know how to climb stairs – even short two step ones, until she got here. I was fine with that though because the stairs inside our house are hardwood and I think they might be quite slippery for her, plus the stairway is open along one side so there’s literally a risk of falling off them.

My husband has been teaching her to climb the stairs outside the house. I didn’t know he was doing that, but she can now climb the front and back stairs!

And now she can climb the stairs within our house too!

Last night when Chris went to bed she headed for the stairs and ran halfway up them before she realized what she was doing. Then she got nervous and stopped. Since I think our stairs are a hazard for her I’m going to have to find a way to block them off. With only one stairway wall though we can’t even put a baby gate at the bottom though, so I’m thinking of putting some boxes on the stairs to block her way.

Now, I was saying that everything is new to her. For example, I don’t think she’d ever heard a radio, seen a television set, or heard a phone ring. It’s been fun to watch her reactions to them. They don’t scare her at all, but she’ll occasionally bark at the TV. I think she thinks the people on it are really in the room. I’m sure it doesn’t help that we have a large screen television set so the people are fairly large.

She’s obviously never been around microwave ovens either. She turns her head from side to side when the microwave is on listening to the hum and trying to figure out what it is. Then when the timer goes off and the microwave dings she barks. I can’t figure that out since she doesn’t bark at the phone when it rings.

I think she’ll have been exposed to just about everything in our home that moves or makes a sound soon and then she won’t have these funny reactions anymore, but it sure is fun to watch her.
