I think it’s time to get a new car

January 12, 2008 by Tricia

I think that sometime in the Spring my husband and I might start looking for a new car. We’ve got a 1996 Ford Contour that we bought used in 1999. I guess our car is getting kind of old huh? It still looks good and runs fairly well though. I am however tired of the doors sticking together in the winter due to moisture and the power window motors failing!

Before the car starts having major problems due to it’s age we might as well start figuring out what kind of car we want to replace it with right?

I’m kind of partial to Smart Cars and the Prius. Anything that’s economical to drive, conserves energy and is good for the environment. Chris likes both of those cars too. In fact, if we got a smart car it would fit perfectly in our tiny tiny driveway too! We’d never ever get an SUV. It’s just the two of us and we have no need for a big gas guzzler like that. I see way too many people driving big vehicles and they’re all by themselves in the car. What a waste.

If we could each have the car of our dreams I’d get a Porche and my husband would either get a Ferrari or a Corvette. He’s actually been admiring some of the new Corvettes lately. He even visited a page with Corvette history for the years of 1997 up to 2007. The site has all the information about the last decade of Corvettes that you’d ever want to know from the color of the paint used each year to the VIN numbers. I looked at the site to see how the Corvette has changed over the years. Don’t tell my husband but I kind of like Corvettes as well. I’m not sure they’re that practical for a home that doesn’t have a garage to keep the car in, in the winter though!

Maybe if we come into some money we’ll get the cars of our dreams, but for now I think we just need to replace our current car with something practical. I’ve no idea what kind of car we’ll end up buying but I’m certain we’ll have a new car by summer.

Any suggestions?

Neighbors renovating

January 11, 2008 by Tricia

Well our neighbors finally took their house off the market just before Christmas. They decided to try to sell again in the Spring. First however they are going to work on their home to make it more appealing.

This week they had gas connected to the house and earlier today there was a lot of drilling and banging going on as they had their new gas furnace installed. They’d had oil heating prior to this and I guess some of the noise I was hearing was their old oil tank being removed. We’ve got a oil heating as well and I suppose at some point we’ll have to change over to gas.

I think our neighbors might be renovating their bathroom too. I saw one of their old bathroom vanities sitting outside.

There house needs a lot of work. They should have never tried to sell their house before doing some basic repairs and fix ups!

Strange weather is making me achy

January 8, 2008 by Tricia

The weather here in Toronto has been strange lately. We were hit with snow early in the season – November, and now we’re having a warm spell right after a really bad cold spell.

I think all these weather changes are affecting the way I feel. I mean, last week when it was -20 Celsius (-4 F) my knee was aching really bad and now that it’s 14 Celsius (55 F) and raining my knee is aching again. It’s gotta be the weather.

On top of that I think I’m also getting a migraine! But don’t tell my pain doctor (for my Crohns) as she asks me every time I see her if I’ve got migraines. Why I don’t know … maybe I’d fit her “pain profile” better if I did have migraines all the time or something.

Anyone else affected by the weather like this?

I’m enjoying walking around the neighborhood

December 14, 2007 by Tricia

Well I’ve been taking lots and lots of walks around the neighborhood with our little puppy lately.

I’m enjoying getting out so much even thought it’s getting so much colder! Plus we had a huge snow storm on Thursday so walking on the un-shoveled sidewalks wasn’t all that much fun. Puppy enjoyed it though. She kind of gallops like a horse through the snow jumping from snow mound to snow mound. It’s really quite cute.

I can’t wait until our puppy gets her third set of shots in early January and I guess her rabies vaccines shortly after that too. She’ll be a little older and since she’ll have all her vaccinations we’ll be able walk further and maybe even go to the park. Certainly by February or early March we should be able to do that anyway.

We live in a nice enough neighborhood but there’s some very nice neighborhoods within easy walking distance and I’d love to walk Midnight around that area. She could get her exercise (me too) and I could spend time looking at all of the luxury homes and everyones gardens.

Midnight was 12 weeks old when we got her November 23rd and she’d only had one set of shots, her first, near the beginning of October. She should have had two sets of vaccinations by the time she was 12 weeks old. So she’s behind.

Because she’s behind in her vaccinations we were only going to let her use the front and back yards at first, but then it snowed. Much earlier this year than the last several and the snow is staying on the ground instead of melting away in a few days. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think with all the snow it’s a little safer to take her for walks just around the block. We aren’t going near the park, nor are we going in any areas that other dogs frequent. I suppose there’s always a chance that she can pick up something, but I’m hoping the snow is covering up all the potential bad germs.

I guess that’s the only real good thing about having a young puppy at this time of year. I know I’m going to dread going out with her several times a day when it’s -10 or -15 Celsius, but as far as her chances of catching any of the bugs that live in the soil or that would likely be in higher concentrations spring through fall she’s safer.

What do you think? Is it safe to take short walks just around the block when there’s snow covering the ground or should we stick to our own property until her vaccinations are finished?

Donate your car to Car Angel and help kids in need

December 13, 2007 by Tricia

There’s a really cool website called Car Angel where you can make a car donation or for that matter you can even donate a boat, an RV, a house, or even a plane and I believe the money from the proceeds of your donation goes towards helping single mothers, orphans, homeless, teen and adult rehab and prison reform.

The people at Car Angel also use the donations they receive to make videos for kids and teens. In total they’ve given away over 2.4 million videos!

As you might expect Car Angel is a non-profit organization, created to help those in need. You can help by making a donation. It’s easy to do. For example if you are donating a car they will do all the work to schedule the vehicles pick up or towing. They’ll also do all the work involved with transferring the title. Your donation will qualify as an IRS tax deduction as well.

This is one of the videos that they’ve purchased for kids that is distributed free thanks to all of the donations Car Angel has received:
