Looking for free WordPress Themes

June 15, 2008 by Tricia

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this on this blog, but since January I’ve been on a wordpress Theme hunt. I have several blogs and as I prepared to finally update them to wordpress 2.3.3 I realized that some of the themes needed updating. They needed updating not only because the sites needed a new look, but because the themes I’d been using had flaws like loading the sidebars before the content or comments being way at the bottom of the page after a huge gap when viewed in IE. Plus a few of the themes weren’t widgetized and now that I use widgets for my sidebars I’m in love with them. It certainly makes it easier to switch themes quickly if you are using widgets.

I found a lot of themes that I liked. In fact I have a test blog that’s loaded with about 100 themes as I just couldn’t decide which ones to use for the blogs I was updating. LOL

One of the sites were I found a few themes that I liked was Top WP Themes. If you are looking for themes they have a selection of some of the best wordpress themes around.

The site is updated with a new theme almost daily so if you are looking for the perfect theme for your blog look through their archives and I’m sure you’ll find one that suits your needs. Of course you can also bookmark the site and visit it regularly to see what new themes have been posted too. That’s what I’m going to do as I’m still looking for a new theme for this site.

What I like about this site is that you can also look up themes by category. If you are looking for a two column theme, a three column theme, Adsense ready, fixed width or widget ready theme just click on the appropriate theme category and you’ll find dozens of designs. You can preview the themes before you download them if you want to be sure the theme has all the right features.

I’ve already spent some time browsing the site and I think this Rainbow Garden theme is kind of cute. It would certainly be a different look for this blog!

If you are new to wordpress and aren’t sure how to install new themes there’s a helpful installation guide on the Top WP Themes website. They also offer support for some of the themes listed on their site. That’s always helpful!

So if you’re looking for a new look for your wordpress site be sure to check out Top WP Themes. I’ll bet you find a few themes that you like – maybe you’ll even end up with a collection of themes like I did!

Losing weight

June 4, 2008 by Tricia

I just thought I’d give you an update on my continuing weight loss. As regular readers know I’ve been off work on medical leave for more than two years due to Crohn’s Disease.

Over the past two years I’ve managed to gain a few pounds due mainly to inactivity thanks to my abdominal pain. Last November we got a Lab puppy to keep me company and as a way to motivate me to get more active. Dogs need to get outside, even if you don’t feel like taking them out, right?

Well, between Midnight keeping me busy and now Spring gardening tasks etc I’ve noticed that I’ve started to lose some weight. I hadn’t gained a lot of weight, but enough that I wasn’t looking forward to summer shorts and skimpier clothes if you know what I mean!

So I’m happy to say that the weight seems to be dropping off without the help of a strict diet or dieting aids like Slimquick. I’ve just become more active.

Of course I do watch what I eat. I have to since I have Crohns as I have trouble digesting quite a few foods. However I do try to eat low fat foods, lean proteins and limit the sweets.

Have you been trying to lose weight? What have you done and have you been successful?

Open Doors Toronto

May 24, 2008 by Tricia

I just realized that this weekend is “Open Doors Toronto” weekend. Geez … already missed a day too.

Yesterday, while Chris and I were watching the news we saw a story about Open Doors Toronto. Open Doors is when many of the historic buildings in Toronto or places of interest open their doors free of charge so that people can tour the buildings or sites. You get to see places that are almost never open to the public. It’s quite interesting.

There’s a very old house on Queen Street with a historic Toronto Garden. The last time we participated in Open Doors Toronto it was in the little travel guide they put in the newspaper and we went to see the house and garden. They’ve maintained the garden as it was when the original owners of the home first created the garden. There’s old roses there that I’ve never seen anywhere else.

Well it’s supposed to be very nice tomorrow, so along with getting some of my own gardening done, we’ll probably try to see some of the sites that are participating in this years Open Doors Toronto.

If you’re in the Toronto area have you been to Open Doors before?

Foiled by the weather

May 19, 2008 by Tricia

It rained yesterday and into the evening. Our plans ended up being foiled … yes … ruined.

Do you remember that I mentioned we were supposed to get together with friends on Sunday evening for some fireworks to celebrate our Victoria day weekend? Uh huh …. well that didn’t work out.

I’m a trooper though. I really thought we’d still go out even though it was lightly drizzling. I got dressed up to go out for dinner with our friends – designer jewelry and all, and then, when our dinner was finished and we were about to go to the fireworks it started to pour outside!

Fireworks get canceled when it rains so hard that the rain drops are bouncing off the pavement.

Oh well … we still have a chance to go to see fireworks this evening. We might watch them from the beach if it’s nice enough out.

I lost a few pounds

May 19, 2008 by Tricia

Hey, I think I lost some weight. Remember I said that I’d gained a little bit of weight lately due to being so sick and not moving around as much? Yes, thank you Crohn’s disease – not.

I don’t weigh myself. One of my doctors weighs me regularly and that’s enough for me. I’ve always had a fear of the scales – even when I was a major bean pole.

I have noticed over the last week or so that my pants and other clothing seems loser. So yeah, I’ll take that as proof that I’ve lost a bit of weight.

I don’t eat much thanks to the Crohn’s disease. Inactivity is my main problem since I feel so awful most of the time. I guess I have been more active over the last few weeks thanks to Spring having arrived. I’ve been out in the garden tidying it up and walking the dog a little more often. It must be working.

I want to be back in shape by the time the hot weather gets here. Heck, I even considered trying Orovo but I’m not much for taking pills to boost my energy. Its the pain that’s the real problem. If I could get rid of that I’d be back to my old self in no time at all.

Anyone else trying to lose a few pounds by dieting or increasing your activity levels?
