The Benefits Of Having Pets In Home

November 12, 2013 by Tricia

Being a pet owner comes with a lot of responsibility. However, there are a number of benefits that can be reaped from owning a pet. Below are some of the ways that you can benefit from owning a pet:

Reduce The Risk Of Allergies, Asthma And Eczema

Allergies occur when the body produces antibodies that cause inflammation. If the inflammation occurs in the airways, then asthma develops. Eczema occurs when inflammation develops in the skin. Many people with children are reluctant to get pets because of allergies. However, studies have shown that children who are exposed to pets during infancy are less likely to have allergic reactions in adulthood. Scientists believe that early exposure to allergens help desensitizes the immune system to them.

Reduced Blood Pressure

Studies have shown that simply owning a pet can help reduce blood pressure. Researchers have also shown that owning a cat or dog can reduce the blood pressure response to mental stress. The hypertension medication was not able to do that.

Stronger Heart

People who own a pet are less likely to die one year after a heart attack. There was a study done that compared non-pet owners to pet owners. The pet owners had a one percent chance of dying within a year of their heart attack, and the non-pet owners had a seven percent chance of dying.

Improved Fitness

Fitness experts recommend that people get at least 150 minutes of physical activity in per week for optimal health. People who own pets are much more likely to meet that requirement. In fact, a study published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health found that dog owners were 34 percent more likely to get the recommended amount of physical activity. Dog owners walk an average of 19 more minutes per week.

Lower Your Cholesterol

A pet can help lower your cholesterol. In fact, they can potentially help lower your cholesterol by five points. Researchers do not know exactly how pets lower your cholesterol. However, they do believe that pet owners are more likely to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Improve Mood

Not only are pets good for physical health, but they are also good for emotional health. People who won pets are more laid back, and they laugh more. That is why pets are often recommended for soldiers who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Soldiers who own pets have an easier time entering back into society. They also are less likely to commit suicide.

How To Protect Your Pet’s Health In House

Many people think that mold does not affect their pet’s health. On the contrary, mold can have a negative effect on a dog or cat’s health. Pets are likely to experience the same allergy symptoms that humans experience, such as ear infections, runny nose and sneezing. They may also experience increased anxiety.

The good news is that there are several things that you can do to protect your pets from mold. You should call in a professional service and have them inspect your home for mold. You should also consider using a dehumidifier in your home because that can help prevent mold growth. You can control outdoor mold growth by keeping your lawn cut. However, you should try to keep your pets in the home as much as possible.

5 Gifts that Inspire the Hard-to-Shop-For

November 26, 2012 by Trish

The delightful tear of wrapping paper, the high-pitched giggles that ensue, the never-ending sound of laughter and fun with a brand new toy – ahh, holiday shopping for kids is so easy to do and even easier to enjoy after the gift has been given. But not everyone on your holiday shopping list is going to be this easy to shop for, and in fact, you might need a little inspiration to get you going on the shopping train.

It might not even be inspiration that you need to possess – it might actually be inspiration that you need to give. It could be inspiration to work harder at a job or keep striving to reach that dream. Whatever it is that may end up being the perfect gift for those on your list that are hard to shop for, everyone needs a little inspiration, and here are just 6 ideas for those tough-to-buy-for folks that need it most.

The Grumpy Coworker

The grumpy coworker is the one who just can’t seem to get into the holiday spirit. Instead of bouncing around the office in holiday cheer like so many other folks around this time of year, this person will sit quietly at their desk with headphones on (NOT playing Christmas music), not participate in company holiday parties and completely tune out the joy of the season.

So what do you buy for this friend and coworker of yours that just doesn’t seem to like the holidays? You’re best off going with something simple for this person, like a plain ceramic mug that they can use to sip on coffee, or better yet, hot chocolate, if you wish to instill some holiday cheer in them. Find a mug that has a great quote on it, something either encouraging or funny, and stuff it with some hot cocoa mix, a candy cane and a peppermint spoon all tied up in red and green ribbons.

It’s a simple way to say “Happy Holidays” without being over-the-top for someone that you rarely see outside of work and who doesn’t particularly enjoy the holidays, anyway.

The Awesome Boss

Sticking to the office gifts for now, what do you get for the boss who you just love to come in and see every day (hopefully, we’re all so lucky!)? You want something that isn’t too personal, but is still thoughtful enough to say that you enjoy working for them and you’re thankful for your position in their company.

Here’s just one idea: take your company’s logo, or a photo of the whole team out at a company outing, and have it made into a holiday ornament. An ornament is thoughtful and will be put out year after year in your boss’ home, and nothing is more inspiring to a boss than knowing that their employees think this highly of them to give such a wonderful gift. It’s simple, it’s affordable and it’s definitely memorable.

The Mother-in-Law

Your in-laws can be some of the hardest people to shop for during the holidays, most specifically your mother-in-law, mainly because no matter how long you’ve known them, chances are you’ll still never know them like you know your own parents. Choosing a gift for them, then, can prove to be a major challenge.

For your mother-in-law this year, why not purchase some inspirational jewelry, like a necklace or a pair of earrings, that have a positive, uplifting, loving quote inscribed on the jewelry itself? Often times you can find these items at a relatively low cost (usually online), and it’ll be a simple, constant reminder to your MIL that you love her and you want her to be happy and stay positive always.

The Brother

Men are tough to find gifts for as it is, and your brother makes it even tougher sometimes because, well, he’s your brother, and that’s his goal in life – to make your life more difficult.

If he is of age, consider purchasing a Beer of the Month Club membership on his behalf. These things are everywhere, so it’s not like they’re hard to find, and they really are a gift that keeps on giving. He’ll receive a certain number of craft beers from across the world every single month for as long as you choose to purchase his membership for (careful – the longer you’re a member, the more money you pay – if you have to stay on a budget, choose a short membership, like 3 or 4 months). Plus, they send along info about where the beer was brewed and the history and stories behind each brewery.

It’s a perfect way to say “I love you” and “I’m thinking about you all year long, not just during the holidays” and even “I care about your interests, too.” The next logical step is an across-the-country beer tour with your big or little bro, but save that for a time when you have a ton of vacation days left and nothing better to do, of course!

The Spouse

Ahh, the spouse. The one person on your list that is either the absolute easiest person for you to shop for, or possibly the complete most difficult one. If you’ve been together for many, many years, you might even be running out of ideas, but you know that you have to get something extra special for the one you love during the holidays.

Depending on the kind of person that your spouse is, a different gift might inspire him or her to do one thing or another versus someone else who is entirely different. That said, one great gift that will convey love and thoughtfulness perfectly is a custom homemade blanket with a hand embroidered love quote in one corner. It sounds harder than it is.

All you really have to do is hit the fabric store, choose 2 prints of fleece that your spouse may like, cut strips all the way around both pieces and tie the strips to each other to make a double-sided blanket with little fringe knots on the edges. The embroidery is easy, too – just pick a color of thread that goes with the blanket and is visible, draw your quote out on the fabric first, then stitch over it. You can remove the marker outline with a simple fabric cleaner.

Everyone loves to be all warm and cozy in the wintertime, and who knows, this custom, loving blanket may even inspire your spouse to snuggle up with you more than ever!

Decorative Fypon Elements For The Whole Home

November 4, 2012 by Trish

Homeowners are often looking for new and affordable ways to update the look of the interior or exterior of their homes. As they investigate the different options, they may find that certain construction materials offer more convenience than others and Fypon urethane falls into that category. Environmentally conscious homeowners will appreciate an option that doesn’t deplete the amount of trees and forestation across the country. With many weather resistant qualities, Fypon products are ideal for exterior home improvement projects, and homeowners who are looking for a way to update the look of their entire home will appreciate the versatility of Fypon decorative elements.

Just what is Fypon urethane?

Fypon is actually the name brand for products made from urethane foam and forced into the decorative shapes and designs that are so popular in new homes and in remodeled older homes. These products provide homeowners an alternative to wood. Without needing to provide the continuous maintenance that wood products require and without feeling guilty about reducing the forests for their decorating purposes, homeowners may use Fypon elements on the exterior and interior of their homes. Some examples of decorative elements include:

                Exterior Elements

  • Louvers
  • Trim
  • Keystones
  • Door and window surrounds
  • Pediments
  • Crossheads
  • Pilasters
  • Balustrades

Interior Elements

  • Faux beams
  • Decorative trim moldings
  • Window trim and brackets
  • Ceiling trim and brackets
  • Interior balustrades
  • Ceiling medallions
  • Column wraps

While many people will think of these elements in the traditional white, there are also many other colors available for either exterior or interior applications.

Benefits of Fypon for Exterior Decorating

There are many decorative reasons to consider adding Fypon decorative elements to the front of the home or for any of the doorways and windows around the sides and back of the home. The framing around doors and windows creates a multi-dimensional look and enhances the existing beauty of the home. Adding extra details such as sunbursts, molding, rams head pediments and more will provide a fresh, new look to the exterior of the home and will also create an appearance that stands apart from the other homes in the area. Homeowners will also appreciate the use of these decorative elements as they work to seal up any areas around doors and windows that may have been a source of drafts or air loss for the home. With Fypon elements, homeowners can create a variety of different decorative styles and may be able to reduce the amount that they pay for their heating and cooling costs. Plus the weather resistant qualities make this decorative material a worthwhile investment.

Fypon Benefits for the Interior of the Home

Many of the benefits relating to the use of Fypon will be the same both inside and outside of the home. The added detail can frame an attractive display or may be used as a display in and of themselves. Molding full of grape bunches, twining leaves or other decorative patterns can increase the formal tone of a room or could be used to create a traditional and homey feel throughout the home. Cleaning and other necessary maintenance inside the home may be simplified when Fypon elements are used.

Whenever a remodel is in order or if the time has come for a complete change with a new home, Fypon decorative elements are an affordable and convenient alternative to wood décor. Both resistant to the elements and adaptable for many indoor and outdoor decorating, Fypon elements are growing in popularity in the building and reconstruction field.L

Hello world!

February 24, 2007 by Tricia

Welcome to My World. I created this blog just to talk about every day life – the good, the bad and hopefully the amusing!

Yes, I do already have a general blog, but it’s turned into so much more than that. I just wanted a place to babble and I can’t really do that on my main blog anymore. Not in the same way that I probably can here anyway.

I hope you enjoy this little piece of my world.
