I’m glad the holidays are over!

January 2, 2009 by Tricia

So … How did the Holidays treat you? Did you have a nice time with friends and relatives? A big turkey dinner at Christmas? Get at least one present you really wanted? Party too much at New Years?

Chris and I had a nice Christmas and New Years. We went to his parents on Christmas day for a meal. No, it wasn’t a turkey dinner. Darn! My Mother in Law isn’t the best cook. She made mashed turnip, carrots, mashed potatoes, stuffing and uhm cooked up those pressed chicken breasts that you get from M & M’s.

The meal was OK, but for me it didn’t seem like a true Christmas dinner. So this weekend Chris and I are going to either get a small turkey or some turkey breasts and I’ll make us up a tasty New Years dinner either tomorrow or Sunday. Hey, it’s not the holidays to me if you don’t have some leftover turkey kicking around.

Chris’ older brother was visiting from Chicago and he brought his youngest son, 14 years old, with him. So on Christmas evening we drove from Chris’ parents home in Brantford back to our house in Toronto and all the guys ended up going to the park down the street from us to play hockey on the hockey rink. They actually did that twice a day for four days. So the guys got their exercise!

Unfortunately when they were in the house they watched hockey game after hockey game – old classics and the World Junior Hockey tournament pre-games so needless to say I’m hockeyed out. Chris’ cousin brought his two sons over for one of the days as well, so I think I’m “guyed” out as well. There was way too much testosterone around here last weekend!

Chris’ brother left on Monday and I’ve been recovering from the holidays and enjoying the peace and quite ever since.

Unfortunately for my nephew, I happened to go into the basement one day during the week and I discovered that he’d left a piece of his Samsonite luggage and a pair of jeans behind! I guess things like that happen to 14 year olds! Now I need to find out if we should ship the luggage and jeans to Chicago or just keep them until they come back for another visit.

It was really cold here at New Years so instead of going downtown to see the live show that they put on here in Toronto we stayed in and cuddled on the couch watching TV. We ended up watching the Niagara Falls New Years show and saw Roger Hodgson of Supertramp and Kim Mitchell perform. It was a great show!

Overall I’d say the holidays were great, but I’m tired out. I’ve been so sleepy this week. Maybe I’m fighting something or maybe it’s the Vitamin D supplements that I started taking (just found out I’m vitamin D deficient) that are making me tired. Either way I could sleep all day and night. Not good when you work from home!

I hope that the holidays were good to you and that you’re ready to get a good start in 2009! Happy New year and thank you for being loyal readers! I appreciate your visits and comments.

Too many weight loss commercials lately

October 29, 2008 by Tricia

It seems that pretty much everything I look at these days has some kind of article or advertisement for weight loss products. I don’t know how many times a day I see Marie Osmond’s advertisement for Nutrisystem! Depending how long I’ve got the TV on each day I guess I see that commercial between five and maybe 15 times a day!

Maybe the commercials and ads are just standing out a little more as I’ve been thinking about the few extra pounds I’ve gained lately. it’s not easy having a chronic disease (Crohn’s). You become less active when you aren’t feeling well or in pain and the next thing you know you’ve gained some weight. It sucks.

One of the weight loss supplements I’ve been hearing about lately is alli diet pills. They apparently help reduce the amount of fat that your body absorbs. Back in the early 90’s I used to work in a pain clinic and one of the patients was taking a diet pill that sounded very similar to Alli, maybe it was Alli or a predecessor to the drug. Anyway … I don’t think she reduced her fat intake because the pills ended up causing problems for her. I guess they gave her the runs! I don’t know if Alli can do that to you or not .. hopefully they’ve overcome that problem.

Have you noticed an increase in weight loss ads or commercials? Maybe the companies that specialize in weight loss diets and supplements are stepping up their game since the holiday season is near. Everyone wants to look good for the holidays, don’t they?

My PVR is getting full!

October 7, 2008 by Tricia

I think I’m going to get new television show burnout soon. If you watch TV you already know that most of our old favorite shows started coming back about two weeks ago, and most will be back by the end of the week. Plus there’s new shows that started last year that we enjoyed but didn’t get to see for very long before the writers strike started and they went off the air. Well those are back too, plus there’s brand new shows to check out.

I tell ya, my PVR is just about full! I’ve spent a good part of the afternoon watching previously taped shows so that I could make room for shows like House and NCIS and others that are on tonight! This wouldn’t be so much of a problem if all the shows that we liked were on a different times and not two shows in the same time slot. The only way to get around that is to tape them and watch them later right?

I’m sure a few of the new and returning shows will end up being canceled by the end of November or early December so that will make watching or finding the time to watch the taped shows a bit easier.

What really sucks is that I want to try out a downloadable audio books membership, but it will have to wait for a while, because there’s no way that I have any time to listen to audio books with this backlog of TV shows filling up my PVR.

I guess it would be better if I didn’t like so many TV shows, but that’s the way things are working out right now. Hmmm We rent our PVR from our cable company .. I wonder if they have a newer model that has a larger hard drive? I’ve got to remember to check that out.

Do you find this time of year difficult too. I mean, finding time to do the things you need to do around the house yet trying to make time to watch all of your favorite shows premieres and check out new TV shows too?

Did you watch the premiere of Fringe?

September 11, 2008 by Tricia

There are a few new shows premiering this week so we’ve been taping them and watching them when we have time. At this moment I’m watching the new TV show “Fringe” that premiered on Tuesday night.

I’m not very far into this new sci-fi series, but from what I’ve seen I think I’ll like it. That says something, because I don’t normally like Sci-Fi series .. Well ok, I liked Star Trek the Next Generation, but nothing really since then.

Did you see the show? What did you think of Fringe?

Our home theater system isn’t working

August 9, 2008 by Tricia

I’m so ticked off. Our home theater system still doesn’t work. Every time we try to turn it on it says “overload” yet we’ve tried unplugging just about everything that the Home Theater system is connected to (excluding the TV) and it still says overload.

At first we thought there might be a fuse inside that had blown, but now I think it’s just the machine that’s not working right and this is it’s way of telling us.

So the other day Chris and I were in Costco (that’s like Sam’s Club) to do a little shopping and I suggested that we look at new home theater systems. They only had three to choose from and we didn’t really like any of the choices so I guess we’ll keep looking.

I really miss using the home theater system. Chris loved to use it when watching sports – particularly hockey. I could do without that, but it was nice when we’d watch a movie, dvd or when I wanted to listen to music. We had it hooked up to or 200 CD disk player so with the surround sound it was perfect if you were having a party or wanted to listen to music for hours without changing CDs.

I guess we’ll eventually get a new Home Theater system or figure out what really is wrong with our current one. Sometime in the future, when we renovate the basement, the wide screen TV, home theater system, PVR, DVD player, DVD recorder, Disk player and even the home theater seating will all move to the basement. I want that to be our rec room area and as long as our basement stays dry (crossing fingers as it really is a dry basement) it would be a great area for settling in and watching a great movie.

Has your home theater system ever given you and overload message? Ours is a Panasonic. If so, what did you do about it?
