Our home theater system isn’t working

August 9, 2008 by Tricia

I’m so ticked off. Our home theater system still doesn’t work. Every time we try to turn it on it says “overload” yet we’ve tried unplugging just about everything that the Home Theater system is connected to (excluding the TV) and it still says overload.

At first we thought there might be a fuse inside that had blown, but now I think it’s just the machine that’s not working right and this is it’s way of telling us.

So the other day Chris and I were in Costco (that’s like Sam’s Club) to do a little shopping and I suggested that we look at new home theater systems. They only had three to choose from and we didn’t really like any of the choices so I guess we’ll keep looking.

I really miss using the home theater system. Chris loved to use it when watching sports – particularly hockey. I could do without that, but it was nice when we’d watch a movie, dvd or when I wanted to listen to music. We had it hooked up to or 200 CD disk player so with the surround sound it was perfect if you were having a party or wanted to listen to music for hours without changing CDs.

I guess we’ll eventually get a new Home Theater system or figure out what really is wrong with our current one. Sometime in the future, when we renovate the basement, the wide screen TV, home theater system, PVR, DVD player, DVD recorder, Disk player and even the home theater seating will all move to the basement. I want that to be our rec room area and as long as our basement stays dry (crossing fingers as it really is a dry basement) it would be a great area for settling in and watching a great movie.

Has your home theater system ever given you and overload message? Ours is a Panasonic. If so, what did you do about it?

Summer TV viewing

July 11, 2008 by Tricia

I’m really enjoying some of the new Summer TV shows.

Actually I’m glad there are a few new shows airing during the summer. When I was younger the networks never started new shows at the end of May, in June or July. All you could see was reruns and movies during the summer if you wanted to watch TV.

The shows that I’ve been watching have been SwingTown, Mad Men, The Border and In Plain Site. A new one just started tonight as well. I haven’t watched it yet, but it’s currently taping on my DVR. It’s called Flashpoint and seems to be about a Strategic Response Unit and hostage takings. It seemed like it would be a good show.

I like action type shows and murder mystery ones like the CSI’s. Maybe it’s all the evidence collection, DNA testing and the “who done it” that makes the stories so interesting.

Are you watching any of the new summer shows? Which ones?

Watching movies while I wait for new episodes of favorite TV shows

March 10, 2008 by Tricia

We’ve had the movie channels as part of our cable package for years, but I must say that we don’t really use it often. We watch more of the regular top cable shows and documentaries or special shows on the specialty channels than we do movies.

However, having said that, with the writers strike going on for three months and new episodes of our favorite shows delayed until sometime in April we’ve been watching more movies on the movie channels this year.

I can’t remember which movie were were watching last week, but half way through the movie we started seeing subtitling in Spanish. It was really strange! I guess someone messed up at the station and put a DVD on with subtitles or something.

Have you been missing new episodes of your favorite shows too? What have you been watching instead – or have you found something else to do during what used to be your TV time?

Basement renovation ideas?

January 29, 2008 by Tricia

I was watching one of those home shows on TV over the weekend, one of those ones where they totally renovate or redecorate one or two rooms of a house … Well, on the show I watched the renovated the living room so that it would be a home theater with theater seating, big screen TV, surround sound system and special lighting so that when you’re watching a film or something on the big screen the lighting is really low.

I’ve mentioned before that we hope to redo our basement. Well, no redo it, but finish the basement since it’s currently a raw unfinished space. We hope to make part of our basement a home theater room. Of course the rest of the plans include a really nice bathroom, perhaps hiding the laundry area and maybe a small spare bedroom.

I wonder if we can make a spare bedroom without closing off the space with walls? Perhaps just a half wall separating the bedroom area from the home theater room? Our basement is fairly small so I think the more open we keep the space the larger it will look. Yeah, I know, we can’t make it look bigger than it is, but if we start putting walls up all over the place it will look really small.

Any ideas for a basement renovation?

Win movie passes for The Eye of the Dolphin

August 13, 2007 by Tricia

There’s a new movie opening in theaters on August 24th. It’s called Eye of the Dolphin and it’s said to be a perfect family movie that would be enjoyed by teenage girls, or might even be a perfect father daughter movie night outing.

If you’d like a chance to win free movie passes just fill out the form and you might be able to get tickets to an exclusive sneak pre-view of Eye of the Dolphin. You can watch a short movie trailer while visiting the free movie pass site too.

The movie, written by Wendell Morris a three time Emmy winner, was filmed in the Bahamas and features spectacular scenes above and below water, smart dolphins, and a great cast of characters – Carly Schroeder, Adrian Dunbar, Katharine Ross, George Harris, Jane Lynch and Christine Adams.

The story is about a 15 year old girl who’s been expelled from her Los Angeles high school. She’s sent to live with her dolphin researcher father in the Bahamas. The father is a little crusty and has no time for his rebellious daughter. His daughter eventually discovers the dolphins and and unexpected connection forms between the daughter and an orphaned wild dolphin. The girl soon finds that she and the dolphin have the power between them to bring hope to the impoverished residents in her new home.

This sounds like a nice movie for teens or teens and their parents to see.
