I miss my lilies

September 18, 2007 by Tricia

Tiger Lily close up

Why are lilies so short lived. Well not the plants, I mean the flowers.

They are so pretty when they are blooming. Especially if you have a good clump of lilies growing in your garden, yet the blooms only last for a week or two depending on the weather. Then they are done until the following year.

I wish, like some day lilies, that they would bloom two or three times in a season.

Do you grow lilies?

Neighbors neighbors go away

September 15, 2007 by Tricia

My neighbors have gotta go.

I didn’t have a good night so I was having a nap on the couch when I was rudely awoken to the sound of very loud guitar. Even my husband doesn’t play any of his six guitars that loud!

It sounded like they were in my living room.

I think they think that whenever our car isn’t in the driveway we aren’t home so they do whatever the heck they want. You see my husband went out of town for a party today … but there is a car in our driveway … our other neighbors son took advantage of our car being gone so he parked in the single car only driveway we share with our elderly neighbor. Of course his tires are on our lawn! His car is too big for the tiny driveway. At least he doesn’t seem to have hit the house this time!

Ah neighbors on both sides are driving me nuts today.

It’s cold tonight! Brrrrr

September 12, 2007 by Tricia

This is the coldest night in months! Last week we had a heat wave and temperatures were getting into the 40 Celsius (104 F) range with the humidity and now it’s gotten very cool outside.

Actually the last couple of days have been pleasant with temperatures in the low 20’s (68 F to 75 F), but yesterday evening exactly at the same time my husband got home from work a huge storm came up and it cooled everything off dramatically. I mean trees blown over and all!

During and after the storm the temperature dropped. By 11 pm it was only 12 Celsius (53 F) and now, at 3:30 am it’s 11 Celsius (52 F). That’s cold! It’s making me think of winter and it’s far too early to think of winter! It has reminded me that I need a new winter coat though. Perhaps I’ll get a nice warm North Face jacket? One that can stand up to our cold Canadian winters and strong icy cold winds.

It looks like it will be cool most nights over the next week. I think I might have to think about bringing some of the tropical plants that I’ve placed in my garden into the enclosed back porch at night too.

Ahhh I hate the thought of cool weather coming. I haven’t had enough summer yet. It can’t be almost over … can it?

Do you grow … Grass? I do

Blue Fescue grass that is. What were you thinking? That I only grow flowers? Nah … I grow grasses too. The grasses are sometimes the first plants to green up in my garden in early spring and the last to die down when winter arrives.

I believe this is Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’ – It’s common name would be Elijah blue Fescue. Its a cool season, clump forming grass with power blue narrow foliage that grows about 4 to 8 inches tall. Mine, with it’s flowers is taller than that – perhaps closer to a foot in height.

This is a fairly easy grass to grow in the garden along side perennials or annuals. It can be grown in full sun to light shade in well draining soil. This grass is also drought and heat tolerant so it can stand some abuse.

Do you grow grass?

The baseball crowd loved the music

Last Friday my husband and I and pretty much the rest of my family went to a Blue Jays versus the Seattle Mariners baseball game here in Toronto.

It was a great game. The Blue Jays won of course – after making several home runs! Oh and some of the cast of Heroes attended the game too and I was able to get some photos of them. That was interesting. I love that show.

After the game, when we were walking along the walkway leading from the stadium to Front Street we came across a man playing the accordion. I guess the crowd was in a jovial mood because as people passed the musician they broke out into dance.

I think that’s the musician right behind the man in blue who appears to be having a great time dancing to the music.

Oh and on Sunday and Monday we went to the beach. There was a live band at one of the bars we walked by on the beach and I can’t remember what song they were playing, but they sounded just like the band they were copying. Hmmm who knows maybe they were the real band?

On the beach people were playing volleyball, swimming, sunbathing, flying kites and even I’m sure I saw someone with a model rocket. I certainly hope they didn’t set it off at the beach. It was crowded!
